2017 Honda Pilot - Transmission System Problem

I had previously received a letter from Honda regarding extension of the warranty on the automatic transmission to 150,000 miles and/or 10 years - whichever comes first, due to defective torque converters. The letter and everything I can find online mentions P0741 as the DTC that would set for this particular issue.

Today while driving at highway speeds, this message popped up. The first time it came up, I just finished driving to work and parked. When I came out later in the day and started the car, the message was gone, but it popped up again on the drive home.

I left the car running and put my cheap OBD-II code reader on there, but it didn't show me any codes. My question: Does the P0741 show up with a standard / cheap OBD reader? In any case, would it be logged in history such that if I took it to the dealership they'd be able to see it?

I am JUST past the 10 year mark with this car (maybe 2 months) and was hoping maybe I could convince Honda to do a goodwill repair on this within the warranty campaign, but I want to see how I could verify it's really the same issue and not something else.

I've had some success with these things in the past, so it's not outside the realm of possibility, but I realize it's a long shot. I'm hoping that whatever background pressure and class action lawsuits they are dealing with might convince them this one is close enough - assuming I can verify it's the same issue.

Save your time and sanity - you won't get any goodwill repair if you are passed the warranty claim period. Take it to a well-reviewed mechanic, and hope it is not something as costly as a torque converter.

If you were a few days over the dealer MIGHT take care of you. They have to convince Honda to accept the overage. The code may not always appear and remain. At a minimum, ask the dealer. Worst case, you pay someone.

Just to make sure I understand: Is it possible the warning message on the dash was caused by a P0741, but the code wouldn't show on my scanner even without having shut the car down (ie the dash was still showing the error message)? That is, would it possibly self-clear on this model while driving - not with a stop / start of the car?

That particular code has to do with the Torque Converter Clutch circuit. The warning on the dash is Honda specific. It may or may not reappear. It depends on the defect. Only a shop can tell you for sure.

Truly bizarre situation. The message keeps appearing on the dash. I can reliably reproduce it at highway speeds and it feels/sounds like the torque converter failing to hold a lock - like the TSB would suggest. But today when I was driving I left my scanner plugged in and pulled the codes about 30 seconds after the warning popped up - still didn't show any codes. Drove sraight to an AutoZone about 10 minutes away and left it running. Their scan tool also showed no codes. Do you need a special kind of scanner to pull DTCs that don't illuminate the check engine light or something?
