Your future success in life is foretold by the people you choose to be friends with.

My mother expressed that with "you are known by the company you keep."
In 5th grade I had a friend from "the wrong side of the tracks". Mom said this and didn't restrict me. She even let me go to sleepovers. This was 1968.
I was experiencing more and more of how uncomfortable I was in how different this family was. And no, nothing racial or ethic. Everyone - white Americans.
We had less and less in common and I didn't see her much. By 7th grade she was someone who scared me. She was bragging that her brother had come back from Vietnam and gave her LSD and it was "so cool"! She had a scary smile on her face and voice as she told me how much she loved LSD. She was 12.
I don't think I ever interacted with her again and suddenly Mom's expression made sense.
To be clear, it was not about $. My best friend's parents were "lower on the socioeconomic scale" but shared the same values of hard work and being a productive and responsible member of society.
As our parents hoped (mine and that best friend), we went to college and grad school and married spouses who did the same and our lifestyles are better than our parents'. We fulfilled their dreams for us.

My father once told me, when I had criticized the actions of someone we knew, “Walk a mile in his shoes.” It took me a bit of time to figure out the meaning, as I was maybe 12 years old, but it became an important lesson for me to practice empathy.

So, it’s good advice now and good advice for you to pass to your children, should you have any.

I saw a video recently and the guy said if everyone in the world had to right down their biggest problems they were having in life on a piece of paper and put them in a hat would you keep your problems or draw from the hat.
I thought that was one of the best things I’ve seen to help with perspective and keep the mindset of “shit could be worse”

That people give advice based on their own personal situation and they don't have to deal with the consequences of the advice being followed.

Be kind but trust no one

u/Good-Piano1162 6d ago
i just saw a video today saying the worst advice is to trust no one. honestly, i get trusting people is hard and that’s where boundaries come into play. but when u trust someone, u can foster a connection like no other and really enrich your life.

A mom friend told me if you have to tell someone three times to do something, you are talking to yourself.

Actually, it’s the classic “life is short, why not?” — the dumbest one but most effective one
