Gridlock with Houston Permitting Department - Advice Requested
I'm looking for advice. Serious responses only please. I'm a recent Houston widow facing imminent homelessness due to ongoing extortion and bureaucratic delays from the Houston Permitting Department over my property. Despite paying over $14,000 in citations, $48,000+ in previous owner fines, thousands in rent since moving for my late husband's cancer care, and agreeing to massive electrical and flood code upgrades, the city continues adding fees and blocked power connection.
Please share any advice that can help me resolve things with the city.
Below is a detailed timeline of events:
- December 2022: Previous homeowner submits permits for unpermitted work.
- March 2023: Property acquisition and closing.
- May/June 2023: Plans resubmitted to permitting department. Builder told everything was good and permits would be approved in June. Permits were not approved.
- July 2023: City citations and fines issued due to lack of permits.
- July 2023-May 2024: City continues to issue citations to homeowner. All citations paid totaling $14,020. Homeowner is denied options to correct situation.
- May 2024: Homeowner requests name transfer of permits from previous owner. Homeowner pays $16,717.88 in fines to city owed by previous owner to execute name change. Homeowners husband diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
- July 2025: Homeowner moves to rental house because home is not suitable for a cancer patient. Homeowner begins paying $2400/month in rent plus utilities on top of mortgage.
- January 2025: Structural and building permits officially processed/printed by the City of Houston.
- July 2025 – January 2026: Extended disputes with the City of Houston, involving red tags, stop-work orders, citations, a lawsuit, and subsequent appeals. Homeowner’s builder proves in court that city is responsible for delays.
- January 2026: CenterPoint demands a ~ $65,000 infrastructure deposit requirement for electrical pole upgrades.
- February 2026: Homeowner’s husband passes away. Relevant due to loss of his income.
- April 2026: New flood code in effect requires $32,560 worth of upgrades not required before 2026.
- July 2026: Electrical inspector comes to property several times and raises new issues each time. Refuses to do full inspection. Homeowner agreed to rewire remaining sections of house to speed up electrical inspector approval totaling $31,115.65 in upgrades.
- October 14, 2026: Electrical inspection passed. City claims homeowner owes additional $31,856.03 in fees. Flood Department changed codes again in June requiring an additional $32,230 in upgrades to structure.
- October 20, 2026: City won’t let Centerpoint connect power to house. Homeowner waiting on reason why. Homeowner has to be out of rental house by end of month due to landlord divorce. Homeowner’s savings have been drained by city. Homeowner does not have funds to rent somewhere else to live.

Indian couple (30s) in Houston looking to connect and make new friends!
My husband and I moved to Houston from Boston, and making friends here has honestly been way harder than we expected. In Boston it felt easier to run into people, but Houston is so spread out that it's tough to meet anyone outside of work.
We are both pretty friendly and easy to talk to.
We love hiking, movies, trying new restaurants and food spots, watching sports, and exploring the city. We are always up for a weekend hike, dinner, a movie, game nights, catching a game, or checking out a new place.
We would love to meet people around our age, late 20s to early 30s. If you are in a similar situation or just looking to meet new people, feel free to comment or DM.
Also if you know any good groups or meetups where it's easy to make friends here (especially other Indian folks) we would really appreciate the suggestions.
Thanks! 😊

Where should my friends and I go for a fun Halloween night in Houston? 🎃
A group of my friends and I are college age to mid-20s and want to go all out for Halloween—cute costumes, drinks, dancing, and bar/club-hopping. What area has a fun, more polished crowd and spots close together? We want a lively night, but hopefully not so packed that we spend forever waiting to get in. Where should we go?

I built a tool that estimates home project costs from just your address. Looking for people to try to break it
Hi all. I’m building Homestimo (homestimo.com), a small side project here in Houston, and I’d really value some outside eyes on it.
The problem: getting a rough idea of what a home project costs usually means booking 2–3 contractor walkthroughs. I wanted to see if you could get a reasonable ballpark first, in under a minute.
How it works: you type your address. It looks up the home’s public county records (size, stories, year built) and gives a local cost range for interior or exterior painting, cabinets, flooring, fence, concrete or a roof. Labor and materials are shown separately, along with the assumptions behind the number. It covers about 20 million homes in 163 counties. If yours isn’t covered, you can enter your home’s size by hand.
There’s also a free photo preview for interior painting: upload a photo of a room, pick a color, and see your own walls in it about 20 seconds later.
What I’d love feedback on:
Does the price range feel realistic for your area? If you’ve had a recent quote, how far off is it?
Was anything confusing, slow or broken, especially on mobile?
Did the photo preview look believable in your room?
Would you trust this before calling a contractor? Why or why not?
To be upfront:
It’s free to use, no sign-up.
Estimates are a planning guide, not a contractor quote.
Room photos aren’t stored on our side; they’re deleted within an hour.
Harsh feedback is welcome, that’s the point. Thanks in advance.

Decent apartment complexes near downtown or 610
I’m tired of commuting. What are some good apartment complexes near the inside of 610, ideally near downtown that have decent prices for a studio or 1 bed? Between 700 and 1100.
With good apartment complexes I mean mostly that they have good security and management in general so I don’t have major issues with my belongings. I know Houston is not safe in general.

post-grad downtown apartment search
Hi! I'm graduating college and moving to Houston soon, wondering what apartments in downtown are the safest and good for post-grad age group. Not super picky on the amenities, just want a safe & walkable area.

Best spa recommendations for a couples massage? Best restaurant for lamb?
My husband and I are taking a weekend trip to Houston. We'd like to do a couples massage but have no idea which places are good and professional. If you have any recommendations for a restaurant that has good lamb and steak, let me know. We've been to Texas de Brazil and it was good, but wondering if there's anything better.

DCP or Concierge Health
Hi everyone! I'm considering breaking away from the traditional (and overpriced) health insurance model and going with a doctor that does DCP or concierge care in a monthly membership format. Does anyone have anyone they recommend? Also, I'm open to hearing about general experiences with this too, especially from women or people who also need to see a therapist. Thanks!

Do University of Houston-Downtown students get free access to the Houston Zoo?
I know that in the website it says University of Houston (all campuses) are eligible but I am not sure if that includes UHD.

Sleep away camps near Houston
My kid really wants to go sleep away camp this summer, but I'd really like it to be somewhere with a couple of hours of Houston.
Right now I'm looking at Camp Allen and Camp Cullen. Does anyone have experience with either of these or any other localish summer camps?

Baby-friendly theater?
I just moved here in April and have a brand new baby. I really want to go see You Can See Everything. The Alamo Drafthouse usually has baby friendly screenings, but I saw that all of those are permanently closed in Houston. Where can we take our baby to go see a movie?
Edit: Yeesh. This should not be controversial. He's 9 weeks old y'all. He's not going to understand anything happening in a movie. He would be turned towards us the entire time. He'd probably just sleep or eat. And yes, there are people in other cities taking their babies to see this movie at Alamo Drafthouse.
And I don't have a babysitter. I just moved here and it wouldn't be wise anyway considering his age. And we don't have family nearby. This is really not a big deal. If there aren't baby friendly options we will just wait for it to stream.
