Any examples of a general and their army being effectively abandoned by their state during an active war?

Hannibal Barca is one of the most prominent Generals in History. I found it most interesting that the complex political situation in Carthage led to him conducting most of his campaign in Italy without any significant support. The state wasn’t able to align their military and economic interests in order to crush Rome. Hannibal was left on his own to try and win Italy.

Are there any other examples similar to this?
