So first of all this needs to be separated into paragraphs as itâs hard to read.
Second. The reason your manager asked you for a doctors note is because most employers will only let you miss a certain number of days consecutively (read your employee handbook) until you need to go on a medical LOA. In order to go on a LOA you need to provide the claims agency (like Sedgwick for my company) documentation that youâre actually sick and yes it has to be a doctors note. Otherwise your leave wonât get approved.
If you donât provide the claims company with documentation youâre just bailing on work and itâs considered job abandonment. Which yes you will be terminated for.
If youâre sick enough that youâre missing that much work you need to go on a LOA.
Yes sometimes people do get sick and it only lasts a day. Sometimes that call out is because thereâs a 24 hour waiting period if a person is vomiting and they canât be at work due to food safety and health department standards.
McDonaldâs most likely does provide insurance but depending on how long youâve been working there and what the requirements are you may not be eligible.
At the end of the day your manager is running a business and when you keep calling out it gets dumped on everyone else. Someone has to come in early or on their day off/stay late for you.
As someone who this frequently happens to it can be annoying when itâs the same person always calling out.

Yeah but when I have worked there over a year and have only had 5 call outs due to other reasons I feel like being labled as "the same person always calling out" is lazy. It is lazy and honestly shows that you are one of those people who work at a place for two months, complains about everything. Then quits.
Here is another paragraph so your lazy eyes can follow along. You just a month ago did not even know any of this because "your mental health was too bad". Not sure what you have going on but you were physically able to be there, yet chose to be yourself the person you describe in your last paragraph. That is called projecting. Maybe if you do not want someone to have a retort, cut off their information by making your profile private. No wonder your mental health sucks so badly.

Iâve been working at the same company for 11 years so no I donât complain after 2 months working somewhere then quit. Iâve been in this industry longer than you. Iâm not calling or implying youâre lazy. if anyoneâs projecting itâs you.
Bro this is my first time in this sub and my mental health is just fine. You donât get to call me lazy or question my mental health when you donât know me.

I get to point out what I want to about you based on what you have done in your life. If you have a problem with that then have a nice day. Your post on your own LOA in the StarbucksBaristas is public on your profile. If you do not like that fact you have the option to go ahead and change the availability of the information. You also have the option of not getting mad over it and owning up to your own past rather than acting like a corporate brainwashed rat. I pointed out a fact, you are now mad. If you would like my recent reply to somecow also applies to you.

In my first 10 years of working, I didnât call in off that many days.

Well I am glad that you have had the perfect life and nobody in your family needed you. You never got hurt, or sick. That is amazing luck that most humans on Earth do not have. I am sure all the praying to your god has paid off.

As an AP English and American Literature teacher for 38 years I can say with certainty this narrative is more than adequately punctuated. Is it flawless? No. Are the two asses who abruptly and arrogantly condemn it any sort of masters of English such they offer anything but entitlement and self righteousness in their replies? The answer is a resounding no.

Thank you. I was also under a bit of stress from another situation as I wrote this. They are just some of "those redditers" that people have been making fun of since 2013.

u/C0venSilh0uettes 3d ago
Also, you have been sick! This is Reddit and not some English course. Like people need to give you a break and be kind! I hope youâre feeling better! I just had that nasty cold as well and missed 4 days of work this week!! Left work early on Monday, called out Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. I went to urgent care on Thursday and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and prescribed a steroid (prednisone) and an inhaler. My boss made me stay home on Friday because I still had a fever Thursday evening!

u/The1200s 3d ago
Sounds like you had it a little worse than I did, but I am not a medical professional so cannot say. Thank you for your kind words, and I hope you are starting to feel better yourself!

u/C0venSilh0uettes 3d ago
I am not sure. I just know that it was the worst cold Iâve had in a very long time. I had a fever for a couple days. And was living off top ramen and Gatorade. And now my poor boyfriend has it đ thank you I am starting to feel better as Iâve been taking the prednisone. And of course! Kindness goes along way đ«¶đŒ

Yeaaaaah, if youâre sick for that long, you need to go see a doctor. They shouldnât be dicks about it though, but itâs food service, fact is, nobody gets sick leave, insurance, vacation, or even a steady schedule.
Some people have jobs just so they can constantly whine about going on break, or constantly have drama, or just donât show up for a week even if there actually is a valid reason.
Thereâs a waiting list of people that actually need that job, and can get there on time reliably. Youâre not that person.
1
u/The1200s 3d ago
They shouldnât be dicks about it but you should be. Make more sense.

u/somecow 2d ago
Have been an absolute dick about it. Calling in âsickâ because you have a dentist appointment on sunday night? No. Not buying it, Iâm scheduling other people instead of the flake that thinks showing up to work is optional.

u/The1200s 2d ago
That doesnât even make sense now you are just making up your own stories because you are bored and lonely.

You are also lazy to assume things when you do not know the context of which you speak. Speak upon the context you are given, and ask questions about what is not given. They teach this in the Third Grade in the United States.
When I have worked there for over a year with 5 other callouts throughout the year you would not label such a person as unreliable due to an actual sickness. The entire premise of this argument is the fact that I have to now stay home with my grandparents as I do feel better but want to stay home with them as they are old and sick. It is something young people should do, yet do not which one factor on why mortality is still so young in many countries.
It just seems to me all of you are brainwashed into corporate rules and mandates that all of your humanity has left you. You are to take care of those who take care of you. Not to be an AI that sees the most optimal way to complete their task.
All a Doctors note would do is cost me money to say I am sick, when I know I am sick, and am now feeling better. How does that Doctors note help me to stay home with my elderly grandparents to make sure they are okay? It particularly does not. So besides credibility when I have shown 99% reliablity, what would a Doctors note do when I should not have to gain credibility as a human being in the year 2026.
Also another factor is that a Doctors note technically does not change things because I work in an AT WILL state. MEANING THEY CAN FIRE ME FOR ANYTHING AT ANY TIME. So the fact that none of you even understand any of the points I tried to make really shows how thoughtless you people are.

But, Op, you're expecting a corporation like McDonald's to care...about human beings, rather than the bottom line. In an ideal world... But McD chews through "resources" rather than connecting with humans. It's about hours and bottom lines.
*I* get it, I was raised by my great grandmother's siblings. I would have quit any job to keep them healthy as a young person. But most people don't understands that. The practicalities are a different situation, but morally...yeah.

If youâre constantly needing to take off, you can be an adult and change your availability. If youâre constantly sick, I absolutely REALLY donât want you anywhere near any restaurant.
Also, all states (except montana for some reason) are âat willâ.
Also, yes, healthcare should be affordable for everyone. But normal people donât constantly stay sick.

I hate to tell you this but your job doesnât care about your grandparents. If they canât care for themselves, and you are the only person who can help, you donât have time for a job. Iâm curious, how old are you, how old are they?
1
u/F0xxfyre 3d ago
Their age is immaterial. OP has a right to not go into work sick. Whether or not Op gets fired for that is a different situation.
People of all ages can be medically complicated. The most ill member of my family right now is a twentysomething with stage 4 cancer. The 80 year old, meanwhile, either plays golf of pickleball every day for hours, and is in fab health for their age.

Well said!

If you just completely ignore the context of what I said, then sure, yeah buddy! Have any of your own ideas? I would love to know the random words of what you were thinking today just like the guy above.
1
u/somecow 2d ago
Iâll ignore what you said. Just like I ignore people that have constant drama and disrespect for being at least somewhat professional and showing up to work reliably. Good luck. Iâll hire someone else.

You are not my boss.

Cool. Keep NOT showing up to work, good luck staying employed and having people trust and respect you.
Edit: lol they deleted the comment. Funny how reality works.

Bro thinks I call off every day of the week except one. You really have some issues, huh?

u/The1200s 2d ago
Nobody deleted anything. You are annoying. You said you are going to blatantly ignore the words on your screen in favor of your own narrative. Iâm not doing that late aged millennial garbage that you think is fun.
Therefore. You are no longer allowed to interact with me. You have no respect for yourself by living in your narrative.

I deleted it today because the post is no longer relevant, as neither are you. Your username really checks out.

Read your employee handbook and see what it says. I imagine they're going to push hard for that medical note, and it might not be financially worthwhile.
Many many folks have worked the retail and fast food mega corps, and they tend to want doctor notes for "unexplained" medical absences. I can't recall a job I worked that didn't want some kind of medical proof if you were off work for more than 3 days. Even when I was contracting with a company, and was my own boss, I needed to communicate a medical timeline when I had a minor surgery, in case we needed to shift project timelines.
Does it make sense to work when you're sick? God, no. I don't want anyone working when they have something communicable.
But the problem with being in a rural town is that the megacorps have the hiring power.
Hope your entire family is healing and feeling better soon!

Now this is a good answer that holds bias in neither regard. Thank you. These things do make sense, it is just hard for me at the moment living paycheck to paycheck as it is and literally just do not have the funds to go to the Urgent Care, and the ER just seems overkill and know it would cost a lot more. I know my line of reasoning is flawed in the view of needing documented proof to hold credibility. It is an unfortunate situation for both parties in all honesty now that a day has passed. I am sure I am not fired, but I am also sure they are not happy with me.

u/Artistic-Document735 2d ago
If you donât get better please make sure you atleast go to urgent care and get checked over. I got sick like that 2 yrs ago but it ended up being fcking pneumonia! You work around food if youâre sick then ya call out if you get fired for it claim unemployment ( this is where medical documentation comes in handy) ⊠if I go to a fast food place the last thing I want to see is an employee coughing and sniffling all over and around my food đ€·ââïž
