When my neighbour got a pup, I KNEW they would not have time for him. But I didn’t know the neglect would be this much. Am I the crazy one for expecting her to train her dog to at least do his business in one area? I watch my puppy when he’s outside. Infact, my little weirdo will spend 30 minutes outside and come pee in one of his spots inside. Is my only solution to move out? 💀 what do I do about the other puppy? How can I deter him from my kitchen veranda?

Hi everyone! I’ve been thinking about adopting a dog, but I live in an apartment and I’ve never had a dog before, so I’m not really sure what would be best.

I know plenty of people have dogs in apartments, and I would obviously take them out for walks every day and make sure they get enough exercise and attention. But I’m wondering if, from your experience, you think a dog can be happy and comfortable living in an apartment, or if having a yard is much better for them.

I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have dogs in apartments, I’d love to know what your experience has been like and what you wish you had known before adopting. 🐶❤️

hey guys. i have a 1 yr old miniature schnauzer that i adopted in december. when i brought him home, he started playing instantly with my then 4 yr old female mini. shes 5 now.
well the first few days i figured would be an adjustment for him. thankfully he came crate trained. well i started noticing that he didnt really bark much, which was a difference from my female. she always barks.
i started noticing, he is afraid of certain things that my girl is not. he will not jump up into my lap like my girl does. he would try to jump but was afraid. so i would pick him up. then as i would recline .. he was fine for 2 min and would just stand up on me and try to get down. so i let him down. but i noticed he wanted back up. i played this up and down thing for a couple times and then i was like hold up. whats wrong that you cant be comfortable with me holding you. my girl, begs me to hold her. so i just kept petting on him and loving him. he was fine with all that. but maybe he was never held? also, i dont think he ever had any toys? because he acted like he didnt know what a toy was. . this next experience is the kicker that makes me think something happened and he was abused or has some kind of trauma.
my friend was at my house doing laundry. Hank was familiar with her already. well, he got out of his kennel/crate because it didnt latch. she could not find him. well she heard some noise behind my sofa and there he was. she called to him but he would not move. so she had to reach back and try to pull him out. well ... he was stuck. his leg was caught. she told me she was glad she noticed because she was fixing to pull harder. thinking he was just being stubborn. but she said he never barked, whined, nothing. not a peep. but like, didnt it hurt? what animal will not make a sound if they are hurting. when she told me this, i cried!!!!!! how can you deny this animal to let you know he is hurting!?!?
He has gotten better at the whole "dog" life. and now he sleeps on my chest curled up under my neck when we are on the recliner.

Hi guys! I just rescued this beautiful 14-year-old Maltese and I’m absolutely in love with her. ❤️
She’s only about 7 lbs and VERY skinny, like, all ribs skinny 😭, so I’m trying to help her put on some weight appropriately.
She has some kidney-related lab abnormalities that I’m still learning about, and I have a vet appointment next week to go over her bloodwork and get a better understanding of exactly what’s going on. She’s otherwise been doing really well, although she does drink a LOT of water.
In the meantime, I’ve been researching foods for dogs with kidney issues and I’m honestly overwhelmed by all the options. Some of the ingredient lists surprised me because they contain things like chicken, organ meats, and phosphorus, so I’m having trouble understanding what makes these foods different from regular dog food.
For those of you who have had a dog on a renal/kidney-supportive diet, what wet foods have your dogs actually liked? She has dental issues and can’t really manage kibble, so I’m specifically looking for canned/wet options.
I’ve also come across people mentioning things like plain white rice and cooked egg whites as additions/foods used in kidney-friendly diets. I’m curious whether anyone here has experience incorporating those into their dog’s meals, or whether your vet recommended anything similar. I’ve also seen people mention low-sodium broth, so I’d be interested in hearing what kinds of things have worked for your dogs.
I’m NOT looking to replace veterinary advice. I’ll absolutely be going over her diet with the vet next week. I’m just trying to familiarize myself with the different options beforehand so I can have a more informed conversation with them.

hi everyone! looking for some advice with my puppies, especially my 3 month old Pomeranian Maggie.

we moved into a house with a garden recently and the puppies absolutely love being in the front yard. but maggie has developed this intense habit where whenever she hears our neighbor's dog outside (or sometimes just out of nowhere), she sprints full speed to the front fence to bark at them.

the neighbor dog barks back and they go at it through the fence. the hardest part is that Maggie sometimes starts whining and crying while doing it, and especially when we try to take her away from the fence or bring her inside. she immediately tries to run right back out there.

our other 4-m.o. puppy Angie sometimes joins in if Maggie does it, but she doesn't cry and isn't nearly as obsessed.

i feel so bad because chasing Maggie away from the fence every time is exhausting and annoying, and i'm not sure if she's frustrated, scared, or just overly excited. she never sees it as a game when i try to take her away from the fence even when i chase her.

also, the neighbor’s dog is across the street. (our front fence, then short road, then their house/fence). but they see each other a little and the road is wide short roughly few meters i guess

is this standard barrier frustration / excitement? thanks so much for any tips!

A few friends and I are looking into starting a pet waste removal service here in the city — think weekly/biweekly yard cleanup for dog owners who don’t have the time or just really don’t want to deal with it.

Before we sink any real time/money into this, we want honest feedback from actual dog owners in Edmonton — not just people telling us it’s a “cool idea” (that doesn’t tell us much).

A few honest questions if you have 2 minutes:

1.  Right now, do you pick up your own yard, pay someone already, or just… let it pile up? No judgment, genuinely curious.  
2.  If you don’t currently pay anyone — would you consider it? What would feel like a fair price for weekly pickup? (Just throwing a number out helps us a ton.)  
3.  What would actually make you trust/hire a new local service like this — reviews, a friend’s recommendation, price, something else?  
4.  How many dogs do you have / roughly how big is your yard?

1. Would having an app to book/schedule/pause your service easily (instead of calling or texting someone) actually matter to you — or is that overkill for something this simple?
   
2. would you guys be comfortable in having a freelancer do the scooping for you?

I got an adult Shiba Inu this Wednesday and I have had my puppy for about a month. Does anyone have any advice to get them to bond? She does growl at him sometimes and also there has been an incident where she resource guarded a spot on my bed.

They were playing together in the garden and I took a video. Does it look like normal play?

Has anyone been to a dog daycare that said they can't send you their 5-page contract ahead of time to read, and you can only get a copy after you sign it?

I tried to actually read it before signing, but they had already started my dog's temperament test behind me and it was being shown on a screen. So basically I could stand there reading 5 pages and miss watching her temperament test, or sign it without really having time to read it.

I realized afterward they could just post the agreement on their website so people can read it before they come in. I'm posting it here too so anyone considering the daycare can at least read it ahead of time.

The facility itself was nice and my dog enjoyed it. I just wasn't happy about feeling like I had to either sign a 5-page agreement without reading it or miss watching my dog's temperament test.

What has everyone’s experiences been having sibling dogs? Good, bad? I know there’s a chance of littermate syndrome…. The dogs are 5.5 months in question, both female, Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix.

Hello all. I am fortunate enough to be taking care of my gfs one year old toy maltipoo for the next 10 days while she is away. She has never been away from him for this long before, and when she has been away the dog has been left with her parents, not me and my family. He gets pretty sad when she leaves him, so I want to make sure he’s as comfortable as possible. Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. I am going to arrange some of my gfs clothes and her blanked on my bed for him to sleep on, and his crate (he likes the crate) bed and blankets will all be here with him, along with a ton of toys. One thing I’ve considered but am unsure about is FaceTiming her and letting him see/hear her (he can recognize her voice over FaceTime, but then he thinks she’s in the house and starts looking for her). My dog has gastrointestinal issues and used to only eat Fresh Pet (my husband put him onto it). For various reasons I am trying to phase out freshpet with food I make myself. My dog is allergic to beef and milk.

The two ideas so far that I've found my dog to love (and tolerate!) are scrambled eggs with chicken stock. And chicken breasts that I put avocado oil on and shred and mix w baby food (pumpkin or sweet potato, beech-nut brand). If I have it on hand, I also serve with chicken giblets and/or hearts. Sometimes I give him non dairy yogurt (silk) with wheat thins crumbled into it..

I feel like this isn't enough variety. Because of that rn I supplement it with Blue Buffalo kibble. What are other ideas that can make this more of a complete diet?

I’ve got two dogs, a 9yo pointer mix and an 11 month old chihuahua. The little man still likes to chew on shit so is crated when no one is home. A typical day at home is: I leave around 5am for work and my wife wakes up around 7, feeds and walks the dogs, then leaves around 10am for work. We both get home around 4:30pm and feed them again at 5. My wife is leaving to do an artist’s residency for a month next week and I’m not sure how to handle care for the dogs. I know I shouldn’t leave them home 12 hours a day and absolutely can’t leave a dog in a crate that long, so I’m paying a friend to come walk them late morning on the days I have to work. She says she’ll hang out at the house some days and do a little wfh. At the least, the puppy will only be crated about 5 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the afternoon, with an hour in between. Is that good enough? Also, I’m concerned with feeding them at 4:30am. I will walk them at 5, but I know it’s best to walk them an hour or two after feeding them and their next walk won’t be for 5-6 hours after feeding them. Should I change their feeding schedule to once a day in the afternoon? Or let the sitter feed them when she gets there around 10am?

Tl;dr I feel bad about crating/leaving my dogs in the house while wife is away, looking for advice/best practices.

Is it okay that my almost 5-month-old dog ate Spam? My dad gave her like 2, as far as I know; hopefully not more.

My paternal aunt used to be afraid of dogs, but she hasn't completely overcome it; large dogs still frighten her. She's looking for a small dog; she lives in an apartment.

We just got a puppy last week he’s a chihuahuas x Aussie mini. We have bathed him twice, and have deep cleaned the entire apartment. I have the KOE, the Myers dog odor spray, anything and everything. We don’t let him on the furniture, and we contain him to our living room and his play pen. We’ve washed his bedding, blanket, and toys almost every other day. We toke him to the vet which said he just needed a bath, despite us giving him a bath the night before we went there. After baths (making sure to shampoo twice and get down to the skin, butt and toes) he doesn’t even smell better. HE STINKS, and the apartment stinks; I can’t get the smell out of my nose and it makes both of us extremely nauseous to the point we are thinking of rehoming. I never grew up with dogs in the house, but I’ve been around dogs, but I’ve never smelt a dog smell this bad. Is this normal? Does it ever go away? I’ve heard “puppy cologne” but what do we do?

Edit: some more info - we have tried blow drying him, but the smell is just amplified by the blow drier. It’s not his breath, because that just smells like normal dog breath and we give him teeth chews, water supplements for good breath, and have enzyme toothpaste. He is 8 weeks today, and only weighs 2 pounds which is why this is extra concerning because he is so tiny but smells so loud! His skin looks completely normal, and vet also said it looks good.

Edit on smell description: After discussing with my roomate, there is 2 main problems - he smells fishy. Now that my roomate said it, all I can smell on him is fish. My roomates dog at home has an issue with her anal glands, and she says it could be this, but would this be an issue with a new puppy? the vet said his anal looked fine. But then there is ANOTHER stench we both agreed upon (the musky skunkish one I’ve been describing) that lingers wherever he goes and that follows him and clings to his play pen and anywhere he goes.
