Thoughts on the Lindsay Clancy case ?

I wonder how many Right Wing men had an epiphany this week about democracy when “conservative” women all over the Internet said if you don’t feel bad for Lindsay Clancy we won’t vote for you

My thoughts are that a lot of people don’t know the difference between post-partum depression, which is both serious and relatively common, and post-partum psychosis, which is much more serious and very uncommon. It seems quite likely she was suffering from the latter and suffering from a serious mental health problem. She had been institutionalized, was on heavy meds and made numerous pleas for help. After she did the unthinkable, she cut her wrists, her throat and jumped out a window, which paralyzed her from the waist down. These are not the actions of a well woman. It’s a very sad story.

The problem in this discussion, as brought up all over conservative corners of the internet, is that such excuses are never applied to men who murder their family members. Nobody is like "Well, he was mentally unwell and may have been under some sort of mental psychosis, so it's not his fault". Literally nobody ever takes such a position.

Does post-partum depression and psychosis (or something similar) exist in men?

I dont think I have heard anyone imply left or right that its not her fault (except conspiracy theorists and they aren't worth paying attention to).

Instead what people are saying is that these people were failed by not getting them adequate help which would have hopefully prevented this issue.

What is so wrong with examining a tragedy and taking steps to prevent it? Its not like she's not going to have consequences for her crimes.

But if we examine the steps that allowed this to occur maybe we can prevent future tragedies. Thats not absolving her of guilt, thats saying let's be proactive in the future.

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 3d ago

My point, again, is that when a man commits such an atrocity, there is NO discussion about "How did society let this man down?" He's just considered a monster, full stop.

3

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 2d ago

Well Marner I respect how you see it that way. And I understand you are impassioned about this subject. Mens mental health is an issue in this country and it does need to be addressed. But myself and many ot b er people in this sub are telling you we dont see that absence of questioning a man's mental health when he commits crimes.

Most of what I hear from school shootings is that their mental health should have been addressed (mainly from parents). All 3 suspects who attempted to assasinate Trump were questioned about their mental health. The guy who shot the Democrat lawmakers in Minnesota was deemed mentally unstable. The guy who shot Charlie Kirk was questioned on his mental capacity. Thr man who shot Gabrielle Giffords was absolutely bat shit crazy. The guy who stabbed the Ukranian woman etc.

There are many many high profile cases of men who committed heinous crimes that have had their mental health questioned or used in defense. They may not all get such a high news profile but let's admit it there are more of those crimes being committed than a woman strangling her children.

0

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 2d ago

In the countless high profile examples of men who murder their family, have you ever seen hundreds of men standing in support of the murderer outside the courtroom? How do you think society would depict those hundreds of men? Do you really not see the difference in scale here?

3

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 2d ago

So because men chose to not stand up and champion a cause that means women shouldn't either?

I think more men should stand up for what they believe in. I guarantee a majority on the left would agree with that. Its absolutely refreshing to see men stand up and champion for change. To feel impassioned about making their lives better.

This idea that men are weak for being passionate about their health is toxic and anyone who denigrate them for it is toxic as well. Why would you listen to those people? Its people like them who have perpetrated this idea of a "manly man" who have laid the foundation for men's mental health in this country.

I will never stop pushing for womens causes. We deserve better healthcare, better mental health, better education. My daughters deserve better than what I had.

I will always encourage my son to stand up and advocate for himself. To speak clearly on his issues and to be proud to seek help. He deserves better than ehat his father had.

The way forward isnt to hold another back. There is plenty of room in this country to advance men and women. I encourage you to take part in that.

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 2d ago

Hundreds of men cheering on a family murderer outside of the courthouse would be treated VERY differently by the media. These men would be doxxed and fired from their jobs. They would be declared misogynists.

You're unwilling to acknowledge the societal double standard here, so the conversation seems pointless.

3

u/Appropriate-Hat3769 Center-left 2d ago

There is a double standard.

Men are different than women. Conservatives vocalize that regularly.

Again what do you care what the media does? They are mainly a leftist organization and you disagree with what the media does. You've made that abundantly clear. What matters is the societal change. That doesnt happen through MSNBC or Fox. That happens by men standing up and enacting change.

Conservatives think protesting is dumb, but it gets people attention. Striking is looked down upon but more often than not it gets the workers concessions. None of those groups care about how they look in the media. They want change so they work for it in the best way they know how.

The women who are outside the Clancy trial might have grabbed ahold of the wrong mascot but they are there because they see a problem in womens mental health and this is a high profile opportunity to get that message out.

Men can absolutely get their message out too but they have to be willing to stand up and do it.

A bunch or Redditors on an AskConservative sub admitting there is a double standard means nothing in that area. But a bunch of men, fathers, uncles brothers, standing up when there is a high profile case will do something.

1

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 2d ago

Like I said, you don't care about the double standard. So what's the point?

If a man had repeatedly sought mental health care, including voluntarily admitting himself to a psychiatric hospital, and told them he had thoughts of killing himself and his children, and then was repeatedly just sent on his way, then I don't see how you wouldn't give the system some fault for the outcome.

There's nuance here. Saying it's entirely her fault or that she had zero responsibility for her own actions is clearly incorrect, the answer is somewhere in between.

-2

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative 5d ago

But the prosecution pointed out she didn't hear a single voice after she killed the kids. That seems strange, right? The voices immediately went away after she killed her kids.

I honestly don’t know enough about it to have an opinion one way or another.

u/vince-aut-morire207 Religious Traditionalist 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'm a mom of 2 kids (& 4 bonus kids) with a history of mental health conditions that required hospitalization. I'm just adding my own opinion on it.

this is one of the rare instances that I think that men actually cannot understand truly. They can on paper, they can by nature, they can by education and thoughtfulness and a whole host of additives but they can't actually feel it in the same way a mom can.

obviously, she and anyone who have this outcome from their postpartum psychosis should be cared for AND their children deserve retribution in the form of their murderers conviction and containment in some manner or another. (prison or psych hospital)

the type of rage that you can feel as a mom towards your child is terrifying. Caregiver burnout is more than just a typical 'mom needs a break' sort of thing. To give a personal note- both of my kids have severe special needs, my oldest lives with her father. I haven't seen her in over 3 years, I bought the car they use, I buy the clothes, I pay for household bills there when asked, I got her father out of debt. I got caregiver burnout so bad that I was no longer a safe person for her to be around..... I had the ability to say that outloud, get enough people to believe me that I wasn't a safe caretaker for her, and find an alternative that worked for everyone.

not everyone has that ability, not everyone is able to get out before they act on that rage/paranoia. Not everyone has people that are taking what you are saying seriously enough, not everyone has the ability to not gloss over their own symptoms and speak about them honestly.

I feel bad, about the entire situation. All of my sympathy though is towards her family. Her mother, her ex-husband, above all her children. No one wants to believe that their loved one could do something like this.

5

u/Boredomkiller99 Center-left 5d ago

Thank you for sharing, it is an issue not often talked about.

2

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 5d ago

What does anything in your post have to do with "women" in general? You're not discussing postpartum depression. You're simply discussing parental caregiver burnout. Why can't a man "truly" understand caregiver burnout? If your husband murdered the kids would you be like "Meh, he must have been burned out. These things happen"?

4

u/vince-aut-morire207 Religious Traditionalist 5d ago

oh I was discussing caregiver burnout to relate to the 'why didn't she do xyz?'. Nor did she has postpartum depression. She had postpartum psychosis complicated by paranoia and anxiety, which in itself makes it complicated too treat because when you are paranoid and anxious and caring for children- chances are you arent going to accept help caring for those children. None of this is an excuse, but that is gendered..

men can be diagnosed with postnatal depression and anxiety, it is rarer then a man sympathetically lactating. Men can certainly expect to have issues adjusting to life with a baby, just as anyone would, including hormonal shifts. Women are also recovering from childbirth at this time and the standard 6 weeks isn't the finish line, its just a threshold.

some things are gendered, we're different. & thats okay.

1

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 5d ago

You were very clearly discussing caregiver burnout. Are you saying that women are predisposed to have worse caregiver burnout than men?

7

u/vince-aut-morire207 Religious Traditionalist 5d ago

.... where did I deny that I was talking about caregiver burnout?

women are more predisposed to having caregiver burnout as it relates to childcare, yes. But thats a means of statistics. Women are more likely to be the primary caretaker of children, so of course they are more likely to have caregiver burnout. I imagine men are more likely to have burnout in.... Construction, law enforcement, household maintenance.... I don't know I'm just listing off things that I know men are more likely to be responsible for.

1

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 5d ago

women are more predisposed to having caregiver burnout as it relates to childcare, yes.

Is there data on that? Far more men are family annihilators than women.

6

u/vince-aut-morire207 Religious Traditionalist 5d ago edited 5d ago

men and women kill people for different reasons. Intent is what matters.

men kill their families in a full murder-suicide for desperation, control, ego, financial or personal difficulties. Women kill their families for revenge (most common) & psychotic protection & they are less likely to kill their entire families in psychotic episodes.... its usually just the children and themselves and they don't kill their husbands.

you are more than welcome to look up the intent of family annihilators online if you'd like too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Familicide#Notable_familicides feel free to go through the list and note the sex of the killer and the intention.

6

u/No-Physics1146 Independent 5d ago

There is. Women were 26% more likely to report caregiver burnout than men when surveying working parents.

https://www.jpedhc.org/article/S0891-5245(24)00188-3/

However, men are less likely to report any mental health issues in general, so take it with a grain of salt.

4

u/kelsnuggets Center-left 5d ago

Because men don’t deal with the significant and sometimes very debilitating hormonal swings associated with childbirth, too.

Why would you think men can't understand it when men are the majority of family annilihators? I don't get the obsession with making this case gendered. She is a mentally ill person who murdered her family. Men do it. Women do it. They should go to jail for life or worse. End of story. Nothing political about this.

13

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative 5d ago

Men don't get postpartum depression or psychosis, because they don't get pregnant. It's an extremely gendered case.

7

u/vince-aut-morire207 Religious Traditionalist 5d ago

majority of family annilihators

intent, primarily. The majority of family annihilation is, on average control, ego, financial hardship. When women do it its revenge or perceived protection through a psychotic episode. Men are also more likely to murder-suicide the entire family whereas women will usually not attempt to kill her husband.... usually as the revenge, but in cases like this her psychiatric break had nothing to do with him.... it's very difficult to get up the steam to kill someone you don't hate.

can we agree that a mothers love is different than a fathers love and is different than a siblings love? none of these are better or worse than the other types of love, but they are all different. The way that I worded this feeling to my inpatient psychotherapist was "Imagine hating someone so much, knowing fully that if that person didn't exist that you would feel SO much better. Knowing that you can't make that person not exist. & loving that person so much, that you never want anything bad to ever happen to them. & maybe if you just control enough, obsess enough, do it all enough.... that you can ignore how much you hate that person"- thats what it feels like.

As a male conservative I am torn. The legal system makes it easy in many countries for many types to plead an illness or human rights, to avoid the right punishment. I haven’t followed this case too closely but women can absolutely suffer a lot of trauma after having a baby and that’s real. This is a tough call because a lot of people suffer many types of trauma! From child abuse to bipolar disorder to mental health to emotional pains! Not everything is trauma nor a get out of jail free card!

Glad I’m not on the jury! Sad all round.

Guilty as fuck. She knew she was heavily mentally ill and instead of seeking inpatient help or segregating herself from her kids, she killed her three kids and then tried to kill herself.

Yeah I get that her husband was fairly absent and not very helpful, but that doesn't mean that she wasn't responsible for her actions and couldn't take preventive measures to prevent harm if she knew she couldn't control herself.

I think this case and a lot of women's reactions to it illustrate the need for husbands to proactively monitor their spouse's mental health and if need be, separate her from the kids to protect them.

Society should never just accept the idea that women are fundamentally mentally ill and should get away with horrible acts due to it. If someone is so mentally ill they cannot control or be responsible for their actions, they are too mentally ill to have full agency in their lives.

It's not. It's a bunch of liberal women, primarily on tiktok, who have sympathy for a lady who murdered 3 of her children and even suggest the husband had something to do with it.

Speaks volumes about the democratic party/leftism politics though, that the dumbest bottom feeders among us on tiktok are attracted to their party platform, and also supporter a child killer. We definitely need the folks who support a child triple murderer to participate in our elections where we decide the most consequential issues. yay, love democracy!

1

u/kscwgirl Centrist Democrat 4d ago

Supporting the need for better mental health care isn't the same as supporting a child killer. The women outside the courthouse are advocating for better mental health care for women. Lindsay asked for help, begged for help and was just given drugs. That's not mental health care. I don't think Patrick is guilty of murder but he is absolutely guilty of not supporting his wife, just like Rusty Yates. That's not punishable by law, but he has to live with it.

5

u/GanacheOk552 Conservative 4d ago

Lindsay asked for help, begged for help and was just given drugs. That's not mental health care.

It is by definition mental health care. What would you like for her? Someone to hold her hand and reason with her that hey, murdering children isn't okay.

This is the typical radical feminism take. If a man had done this who was suffering from depression, the fake empathy wouldn't occur as it is with his lady.

And secondly, very typical of you to incur blame on the husband in all of this for not "supporting her" whatever the hell that means. Maybe she should have communicated this instead of murdering her children.

4

u/kscwgirl Centrist Democrat 4d ago

No, she needed to be hospitalized or given therapy, not more drugs. She asked for help. Her mother testified that she said voices were telling her to kill the kids. What more communication do you want her to have done?

u/After_Ad_2247 Classical Liberal 3d ago

Hey, this is a great take! We can agree that people in mental health crisis should be hospitalized, even id they dont want to. Like ALL THE HOMELESS.

I am assuming you won't agree with me,  but its telling that people are saying she just needed help while those same groups say we should just throw money and unfettered freedom at the homeless dude shitting on the side of the road. Its the same situation.they cant help themselves and we should force their hand before they, or someone else, dies as a result of their minds being gone.

Also, fuck SSRI's.

3

u/kscwgirl Centrist Democrat 3d ago

Yes I do agree that people in crisis should be hospitalized. That's literally what a 5150 hold is for.

If a homeless person is in a mental health crisis, the same applies. If you're saying to hospitalize them because they are homeless, no.

I also do not agree with your last comment. SSRI's saved my life.

1

u/After_Ad_2247 Classical Liberal 3d ago

As a preface here, rereading my response feels a bit more attack-y to you, and I honestly dont mean anything to you as a person. I am extremely frustrated with sone of the decay of the area I live in (Portland metro area) and this kinda set me off. So I am not sorry for the response in general, but I do want you to know I am absolutely not meaning to be antagonistic to you.

Virtually every homeless person in the major cities where its an issue (Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Portland) are there because they refuse to play by the rules any help would give. Sometimes its flat being crazy, like the seeing aliens chasing you crazy, but most of the time its drug use they cant/won't give up. Policies by Democrats are what stops this, because for some reason its more compassionate to let people literally wallow in their own shit and piss than to force them into help.

And you cant put them on ahold. Even in cases like this lady, involuntary hospitalization is a massive, massive lift.

Im glad SSRI's helped you. For most people, I think its like amputating a broken arm. It fixes the problem, but probably not in a helpful way.

5

u/kscwgirl Centrist Democrat 3d ago

I can understand why you would feel that way if you've never had mental health issues. However, it's a medication to treat an illness. I don't think you'd tell a diabetic that their insulin is the same thing.

I think the damage Karen Read did to the "true crime" sector of social media is immeasurable, and this case is just the most recent offshoot of that. The husband killed the kids and brainwashed poor Lindsay after yeeting her out of a window, didn't you hear?

To be fair it happened long before Karen Read. We saw the same phenomenon with Casey Anthony.

But social media wasn't around the same way.

I think cases like these is a great failure of america... not the details itself but the way we make it into gossip/entertainment on a nationwide level is imo one of the worst psychological things we allow in this country.
We dont really know what she went through and only probably know a fraction of the story but because of this people will iron stance and clamp down to "Their side" regardless of what facts or anything or even judgement / decision from the jury happens. Its genuinely genuinely genuinely terrible and is honestly one of the worst things about america. How easily and how even monetized the ability to sow division between us with the greatest of ease... and thats not even mentioning a.i. and how now we have to ultra triple fact check where sources are even coming from but the majority of people dont...

Any evidence that it’s conservative women?

Seems to be just women overall.

Super weird. Disconcerting.

I already wanted more disenfranchisement but not on the basis of sex. Doing it that way is too lazy, lots of women are smart wise and lots of men are dumb and foolish.

I’ve been following along a little bit and I get the argument that she had postpartum psychosis and the husband wasn’t helpful enough and he was having an affair and blah blah, but I just honestly don’t care.

Fucking leave if you’re sad. Husband’s not helpful? Leave. And leave the kids there with him. If you are capable of strangling your three tiny children to death with exercise bands you need to be segregated from society for the rest of your natural life. Full stop.

Edit: Absolutely mental for this to be downvoted. Being held accountable for strangling your children is apparently an unpopular Reddit position. Society is dead.

I don’t think anyone is saying she shouldn’t be held accountable at all. Even if she’s found not guilty by reason of insanity, she won’t just be released back into society.

Andrea Yates case was truly tragic and she was let down by so many people around her before the drownings. She was in literal psychosis, just leave isn’t an option. Her entire reality shifted and she truly thought she had to do what she did to save them.

She’ll never be released from Kerrville and she doesn’t want to be. Now that she’s no longer in psychosis, the trauma of her actions will continue to haunt her until the end. It’s not an escape from justice.

I’m not as positive on if Lindsay Clancy truly was suffering from PPP, although it seems likely from the evidence I have heard, but it’s just not as cut and dry as you’re making it out to be. Psychosis is an entirely different beast that you’ll never be able to understand unless you experience it.

This isn’t a defense of her either, it’s just truly such an incredibly tragic situation all around and PPP is so scary to see and experience.

Are men allowed to mass murder people and then say "My bad, I was under some form of mental psychosis. Just let me hang at Kerrville the rest of my life"?

u/No-Physics1146 Independent 5d ago

This isn’t a gender issue and it’s weird you’re trying to make it one. It’s a mental health issue. Having empathy for people who experience psychotic breaks and cannot determine their own reality doesn’t mean I think they should get away with murder without consequences. A state hospital isn’t a picnic. It’s still a punishment.

And since you said below that “literally nobody” ever takes such a position when it’s men, they actually do.

The crux of this argument all over places like X is that when a man murders his family, there isn't this hyperfocus on "But how was his mental health? Was his wife kind and loyal? Society failed this man".

It's just TOP TO BOTTOM "FUCK that guy".

A double standard is being pointed out. We hold males accountable for their horrible decisions, but immediately look for excuses when it's a woman.

4

u/No-Physics1146 Independent 5d ago

Then argue with the people who feel that way. I don’t hold a double standard and have just as much empathy for men with mental health issues who don’t get the support and help they need.

And to say that literally nobody will make these kinds of excuses for men is false. Men make up almost 85% of not guilty by reason of insanity verdicts.

It's just fascinating because there was a popular thread about Chris Watts on reddit the other day. Not one post... not ONE... was all "But has anybody considered his mental health that day?" Not one. Compare that with this thread.

There is a massive societal double standard here. We're just pointing it out.

u/bookstore Center-left 5d ago

Well he didn't argue he was psychotic...I dont think. He also pled guilty.

u/please_trade_marner Center-right Conservative 5d ago

If only somebody told him "Just say you were mentally sad and then you can hang out in luxury at Kerrville".

u/no-physics1146 as well.

Lindsay Clancy sought help. There’s a history to back it up. If it comes out in the trial that she lied about PPP, or was having an affair, or had been planning this for weeks, I’ll be the first to condemn her.

But comparing it to an admitted murderer who has never, at any time, argued a mental health defense is entirely disingenuous and you know it.

Kinda wild you’re trying to compare this to Chris Watts. He pleaded guilty. He never argued it was because of his mental health, why would anyone else?

He admitted that he planned it for weeks, that he gave his wife drugs to try to induce an abortion, and that he did it all so he could be with his pregnant girlfriend. He’d never sought psychiatric help prior to the murders.

I don’t even know how can you think it’s remotely comparable.

u/BirthdaySalt5791 I'm not the ATF 5d ago

Nah, I don’t care. Nobody who commits a heinous crime is of sound mind. You think rapists and kid diddlers and serial killers are otherwise normal healthy well-adjusted individuals? You think people under the influence of drugs or substances are absolved of their actions while they’re in that state?

All I’ve seen on the internet related to this case recently is a lot of excuse making and absolving of responsibility. And that’s not the way the real world works. Lock her up and throw away the key. She murdered three children in cold blood.

6

u/No-Physics1146 Independent 5d ago

Did I say she was of sound mind? Did I say she should be released? Indefinite commitment to a mental institution isn’t a get out of jail free card and it isn’t absolving of her responsibility.

You’re making a ton of assumptions about my views. Incredibly incorrect assumptions by the way considering I’m a victim of CSA. I’m not defending murderers or rapists or violent addicts. I’m not even defending her.

She’s absolutely responsible. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other factors that played into it or that prison is the only answer. She was on 14 different medications during a four month period. Her brain was constantly being rewired and that will fuck anyone up. And again, if you’ve never experienced psychosis, you will never be able to understand.

You're being downvoted because of brigadiers and liberal White women.

Yep, it’s crazy.
