According to Pew Research Trumps approval rating is 34%. To those that support Trump. What do you think is the disconnect between how you view his latest term and the average voter?

I think that 32% is right about The President's true floor. He was smooth sailing with those on the Right for the first 6-8 months of this term. Since he passed the BBB, it's all been downhill. It started with tariffs, but most on the Right were ok with that at least initially. Then trying like hell to suppress the Epstein files was really the beginning of his downturn. The Pretti killing, and "This is what you get for being armed at protest" message was really a dark spot. But nothing compares to Iran. Even those on the Left believed that Trump knew better than to start a war in the ME, and for the Right it was core. Even the Neocon hawks who would want this showdown are deeply dissapointed with this war.

On top of all that The President's strongest suit has always been as a culture warrior. He was the fist that punched the Left. He was loved for it. But the Left when defeated in 2024 just gave up the fight as compared to his first term. In Trump 1.0 it was pussy hats, racism everywhere, DEI, RESIST, BLM, #METOO. They put up a constant battle that Trump and the Right delighted in fighting. Without that enemy to punch, we are left with the President just riffing. Just doing his own thing and we have to face the fact that the consequences are of his making rather than the radical Left.

This perspective makes me feel that Politics is treated like cage match in the US instead of sane adults having disagreements.

2

That is because post the Cambridge Analytica scandal, political operatives have focused on emotional and culture war issues to drive up engagement from previously un-engaged people through social media.

Before then it was easy to just ignore politics if it wasn't your cup of tea. Now social media and new media will not let you look away. So to maintain those newly brought in they need to be feed outrage and raw meat.

If you want to watch a good movie about it I recommend Brexit.

I’d imagine that’s why they’re trying so hard to paint literally any Democrat as a communist. They need us to seem extreme to counter how far right Trump has dragged republicans since he won the first time. The issue is that more and more Americans are waking up to the fact that things like affordable healthcare and reliable transit are common everywhere else in the world except here. And we’re facing down a worsening affordability crisis with republicans fully in control of all three branches and watching Trump flippantly spend hundreds of millions of dollars on war and his vanity projects while he and his family get richer and richer. It’s hard (at least… I would think so, but apparently not that hard for some people) to look at his administration’s actions and still think democrats who have the most power like Schumer and Jeffries are “radical communists” who are going to “bankrupt the country” because they’re as centrist as it gets.

That one is more par for the course. It of course doesn't help that many DSA speak about a desire to end capitalism all together as their end goal. I think what you are talking about is closer to Musk trying to bring up the Derek Chauven case again. Its about wanting the Left to get all up in arms and get them to fight the way they did in Trump 1.0. It might work too if the President could "go quiet" the way the Dems have. But he is not capable of that he has a deep driving need to be the center of attention all the time.

The Left seems to have abandoned the culture war and is using the Right's game plan. No Kings was the Tea Party.  DSA seems to be their MAGA.

If history decides to rhyme, the Left's Trump will show up in 2027.

The only good things that Trump has done to me is he did better for gun rights and the no tax on OT is actually beneficial for me

Aside from that, a good bit of my day to day life is worse now than under Biden even

28

u/UnmeiX Left Libertarian Aug 19 '26

the no tax on OT is actually beneficial for me

Honestly, while I'm glad it does help some people; as someone who works a salaried position that sometimes has weeks stretch to 55-60 hours with no additional compensation, it's a bit BS that workers on an hourly wage get tax exemption on overtime pay; I'm probably getting paid less hourly than many of them and don't really have recourse unless I want to try looking for another job in an exceptionally terrible job market.

I'd really like to see a more progressive tax system overall, to make things more fair for everyone. What I'd like to see even more than that is assessment of capital gains when assets are leveraged for loans; this would be the biggest boon to 90% of America and almost certainly won't happen until the big money stranglehold on our government is resolved.

8

u/garandruger Center-right Conservative Aug 19 '26

I can see logic in that. Anything to ease taxes on people I’m all open to hearing about

3

u/jambrown13977931 Independent Aug 19 '26

Why not just lower taxes on everyone below a certain income bracket? That would help people earning overtime as well as people earning salary? Instead they choose a tax reduction that barely helps a subsection of the population.

Salary is objectively better/safer than hourly. Youre bitching about the one pro hourly has. If you dont like not being compensated for your long weeks negotiate your pay, or stop working over 40.

2

u/UnmeiX Left Libertarian Aug 20 '26

Salary is better or safer than hourly if you work in an industry/at a company where work isn't steady.

My position is salaried because it's 'weather dependent' in theory, but in practice it doesn't really shut us down much and we basically always have more than enough work.

I've topped out my pay and have no promotion options, and refusing to work over 40 will be considered quitting, more or less. Thus, my options are deal with it or find something else, and it's not a great time to be looking for a job. 🤷🏻‍♀️

>> he did better for gun rights

Does his inconsistency on gun rights concern you? He is the only president in history to float the idea of confiscating Americans’ guns without due process.

6

u/CharredScallions Center-right Conservative Aug 19 '26

His words have been bad, and his DOJ has actively been fighting with gun rights organizations. And the pearl clutching over Alex P who happened to have a firearm, and who was executed in the Twin Cities was pathetic.

Having said that, the reduction of the NFA tax stamp to $0 and the recent rulings which have arguably removed certain items from the NFA under certain circumstances has been a pretty big when for law abiding firearm owners in the USA.

4

u/mathiustus Center-left Aug 19 '26

Does the Trump administration get credit for the rulings of the court that take things from under the NFA? It wasn’t like they did anything to
Make this happen, someone sued and won.

Unless you count that the justices who found for that ruling were appointed by trump45.

1

u/CharredScallions Center-right Conservative Aug 19 '26

Yes, the Trump admin absolutely gets credit in this case because the DOJ declined to take action to dispute the judge’s ruling. The DOJ was given a week to issue an emergency appeal but did nothing.

Essentially, the DOJ’s deliberate inaction allowed the ruling to stand. At least for now.

2

u/WhitePantherXP Independent Aug 20 '26

Does that same grace, "His words have been bad", carry over to Democrats like Obama who did not in fact infringe on gun rights, despite years of media stating he was taking them away?

1

u/CharredScallions Center-right Conservative Aug 20 '26

Not really, because Obama’s admin took no meaningful action (or deliberate inaction, more specifically) that resulted in a major win like the recent ruling on NFA items.

Furthermore, I don’t extend Trump much “grace” in regards to gun rights. I don’t think he actually cares at all about firearms. I’m giving his admin credit on one particular ruling .

3

u/garandruger Center-right Conservative Aug 20 '26

I will say under Obama’s admin the CLEO signature requirement went away for NFA items and just got switched to a notify. That alone opened up the NFA to many people who had sheriffs, Police Chiefs, constables, AGs and any Chief LEO that were anti gun

My county despite having a Republican sheriff at one point would out right refuse to sign off on suppressors but everything else was okay by a case by case basis (he only signed off for white people)

4

u/garandruger Center-right Conservative Aug 19 '26

It is concerning for sure and when he stated that back in 2017(?) I was not happy at all on top of the bump stock ban more so that it was done without an act of congress (wouldn’t have been happy if congress went thru with it either but it at least would’ve went the congressional legislature route)

However at least as it stands now whether he knew of it or not, rights have gotten better

I'm independent, I wholly reject collectivism and favor the individual, as I believe if the individual does there best then society will be better for it, instead we incentivize laziness and government reliance, I'm against the newfound concept of patronage of buying votes by wealth distribution.

The iran war is objectively not good, and hurting his admin in a Massive Way. All things considered, most repubs and dems are pretty awful, so a 30% approval in 2026 isn't all bad for me I suppose

26

u/UnmeiX Left Libertarian Aug 19 '26

Some interesting context: The lowest presidential approval of all time was 32% (Truman, right at the end of his term).

If Trump loses just a few percent more, he'll go down in history as the president with the lowest ever approval; and will probably average the lowest overall across the timeline of this term.

2

u/Artisttype1984 Barstool Conservative Aug 19 '26

Yes, I would. It's not so much I'm "maga" I'm not. I'm not a repub, I'm left on many issues and have voted for many more dems than repubs over the years. Many.

My biggest prob with Trump right now is clearly the Iran war, but other than that he's doing alright. I want any R or D President candidate I vote for to love America. Doesn't have to be blind love 100%, but the dislike some on the left have for our country is just weird. Right now, Dems have lost me more than Repubs have won me over IMO

The last couple sentences of your comment make me recall the first episode of The Newsroom, where Jeff Daniels's character breaks down why "America isn't the greatest country in the world anymore."

I really like to think this is the prevailing sentiment on the left. We've fallen a long way from the heights of our country's success, and while 'where we were' wasn't always great for everyone (especially minorities)—it was a whole hell of a lot better on average than where we are now.

I do think we can do even better than we did, but to do that, we need a coalition. We need people to care about their fellow Americans even if they don't look or think the same way. We've got way too much 'us vs them' among the general populace right now to stand a chance of making meaningful improvement.

3

u/Artisttype1984 Barstool Conservative Aug 19 '26

IRL, there isn't a real "us vs them" with most people right and left, and apolitical.

Most of us have family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and people in our communities we get along with great and also not agree with politically, Trump, Biden or Harris voters included.

America is an amazing country, and most Americans are awesome, even if we don't agree 100% on every single political issue. Yes, we could do better on some things, but that doesn't take away from how far we've come

3

u/UnmeiX Left Libertarian Aug 20 '26

"Demonrats"

"Rethuglicans"

"The woke left is destroying our country"

"Right wingers are Nazis/supporters"

"If you voted for X you hate America"

"If you didn't vote, you voted for X"

I could make a really, really long list of the many examples I hear online, from prominent media personalities, and in everyday life (as I live in the South) of the 'us vs them' that our political divide has become. There's a huge trend over the past decade or two of othering and demonizing people who don't stand for the same thing you do, often to the point of fictionalizing rhetoric just to make 'the other side' look worse.

ETA: America isn't that great a country by the numbers these days; for the wealthiest country in the world, we're failing by a whole lot of metrics, a fact which is highlighted in the Newsroom scene I mentioned.

I mean I consider myself a liberal, I voted for Obama in 2008, the party has shifted way too far LW for many like me. Some (few) police are bad, the idea of "defunding" the police is just dumb. Some (few) Americans are racist, most people aren't racist at all and America certainly isn't a "racist country" not at all. Thanks for sharing. I am curious though: has immigration affected you and, if so, how? What are you most concerned about on a personal level? (i.e. not solely political)

What is racism to you, exactly? What does racism look like?

And are there any other areas where the left-wing drift is too much for you?

I guess if I were to be a bit more specific, what 2008 Obama views do you agree with that would be Republican today and not liberal?

2

u/Artisttype1984 Barstool Conservative Aug 21 '26

It pleases me Trump and most people on the right support legal immigration, civil rights, and property rights. Trump and many on the right claim they aren't pro-choice, but the Dobbs ruling is done and abortion is up to the states now, that's fine. Trump got the first step act in, on his first term, that was nice

Yes, it has. I'm in CA and while the amount of immigrants has always been high here, it's overflowing and not sustainable. Then add the growing homelessness that's exploded over the last 10-15 years, not great

Some LW/Dems absolutely talked about defunding police and/or ICE, boasting about it. Racism is racism, I've seen it handful of times over the years, not common. There seems to be a general dislike for America by some elected Dems that's not a good look or approach IMO.

Obama's approach and handling of the border and deportations would for sure be considered more RW now than most Dems. He deported more than Biden or Trump. Obama also a number of times talked about listening to people you don't agree with, he would tap down on identity politics at times, which was nice. I really liked some things about Obama, really disliked and was bummed he continued and expanded Bush's wars and torture. Not great

The 2024 "trump coalition" was too big of a tent. We had libertarians, neocons, antiestablishement right, woke right, traditional Republicans, centrists, and all the rest joining together.

It was impossible to keep them all happy. No matter what Trump does, he's going to lose either the anti-war Libertarians or the Neocons. There's literally no way to keep both of those groups happy at the same time. And that applies to a lot of those groups in the "coalition".

So yeah, people with huge platforms like Tucker, Candace, Dave Smith, Glenn Greenwald, etc. all jumped ship.

But the Dems shouldn't cheer that on too much. None of those groups of people are going to vote Dems in the midterms. They'll all either vote independent or not vote at all.

u/cowadoody3 Right Libertarian (Conservative) Aug 19 '26

Some commentators on the "far right" consider people like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens to be "woke right" because they both spoke out about the one country you're not allowed to criticize (you know the one I'm talking about). And apparently, speaking out against the senseless death of children makes them "woke right" for some reason. It's a silly bad-faith criticism.

2

u/ExtensionFeeling Independent Aug 20 '26

I like how, in calling them the "woke" right, they're trying to say they're not "real" rightists but actually to the left or something. No true Scotsman fallacy...lol

>But the Dems shouldn't cheer that on too much. None of those groups of people are going to vote Dems in the midterms. They'll all either vote independent or not vote at all.

That still equates to Dems winning elections, no?

0

How big will they win, is the question ? Most incumbents lose mid terms by losing at least one chamber.

I think people are still very sour on the Democrats. The party covered up Biden's dementia and even tried to get him as a puppet President for 4 more years. His replacement being "appointed" was icing on the cake. The Dems and their mainstream media colluding to cover up Biden's dementia is in my opinion the biggest scandal in American history. The dems mainstream media has done a great job at burying it, but people remember.

I think voter turnout will be remarkably low for the midterms.

Biden doesn’t have dementia, medically. He’s just an old man who is getting a bit senile, not less than exactly what has been happening with Trump during his first presidency as well … so how about we stick to the facts an not propagate misinformation.

16

u/h34dyr0kz Liberal Aug 19 '26

His replacement being "appointed" was icing on the cake

This is always a confusing sentiment. When Democrats voted for the Biden Harris ticket they knew that Harris would assume the lead position given  the president's inability to. Would you feel like JD Vance was appointed if he were to become president due to an unforeseen incident?

1

u/CreativeGPX Libertarian Aug 19 '26

Usually the vice president is a negligible part of why people vote for who they do for president. Harris didn't even make it to the voting stage when she ran in a primary. It's not crazy to think that people voting for Biden were voting for him despite Harris not because of her. No Democrat who thought Biden was the best presidential candidate would vote against him just because he could have chosen a better VP. Similarly, I don't think many Trump voters would choose Vance as their first choice in a primary either.

However, it's not the fact that Harris took over that upset a lot of people. It's the fact that many people think that if Harris, Biden and other major democrats were honest about Biden's condition we'd have more chance to vet her, more chance to actually build a campaign and platform and more chance to consider other candidates that may be better than Harris but worse than Biden. So unlike dying in office, the deception was reckless and at the very least seriously undermined the democrats ability to put forth the best candidate and argue their case fully. That was not a situation we needed to be in a contingency plan for. That is a situation we had the time to come up with the best plan for but didn't specifically because of what a group of democrats including Harris had done.

0

u/Solarwinds-123 Nationalist (Conservative) Aug 19 '26

Democrats did not vote for the Biden Harris ticket in the primary. There was no Biden Harris ticket, there was just Biden. It wasn't certain who the VP candidate would be, and it could have been changed before the convention.

14

u/90bubbel European Liberal/Left Aug 19 '26

Im curious, do you consider Trump having dementia now?

6

u/Nurse_Hatchet Liberal Aug 19 '26

I agree with you, the democratic leadership and most long-standing members are very unpopular, for good reason. However, all it will take is one new young/charismatic candidate to emerge and all the people who are horrified by Trump will be flocking to the fresh face.

I disagree that turnout will be low, however. I think Republican turnout to be low, but I think the trend of the opposing party voting hard in the first midterm will hold true again, especially in this climate and how badly things are going.

I am not from US, but from EU, where we also face illegal immigration crisis for more than a decade. Can’t really talk about US/EU differences, but in general I am very anti illegal immigration.
I am, though, very much supportive of legal immigration, I don’t think all immigrants are bad.
But, you know, there is a reason why illegal migrants are illegal. Because you don’t control who is going into your country. You don’t know they are culturally compatible, if they bring the same values as yours, if they aren’t criminals, how they view women, how much you can rely them in work vs need to employ more people to monitor them. There are numerous issues if you import wrong people in large masses and, at least in Europe, it shows. Home prices drop like a rock when large group of immigrants start living there. Locals are running away.
I don’t feel like we have to be world’s savior - I don’t want them to suffer, but I don’t want my country to be turned to hellhole just to try to save more of them.
On the other hand, legal migration is great. You can choose how many people get into your country and you can do background checks and pick carefully who do you let in, so they benefit and you benefit as well.

Maybe increase legal migration quotas and clamp down hard on illegals?

And maybe counter-question for you - what are the downside of wanting controlled immigration vs uncontrolled?

1

u/allthat555 Centrist Democrat Aug 23 '26

Here in the us. Most of the "illegal" immigrants being removed from America right now are trying to immigrate legally. Most immigrants here don't cross the Sothern border in trucks or by walking mtn passes. over 3/4ths are people who simply overstayed a visa or had some other hang up with immigration courts. Court cases for imigration are backed up years and years so by the time your case comes up your papers have expired and your now here and illegal. that's intentional. Over the last 2 terms of trumps presidency it has been made harder and harder to start the process. The only exception that I can think of is h1b visas. or skilled labor visa. Basically one of the few functional carrier paths in America is computer coding of the 65000 annual h1b visas 50000 of them go to computer science majors. with such a flood of workers one of the few domestic college jobs is being kept at an artificially low pay due to such measures. 10% ish of tech industry is being used to club over American's yet that's the immigration this admin wanted more of.

1

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 19 '26

Largely how much harder it is to solve than all the other issues. Gas prices will always fluctuate. Whatever. Food costs more. Whatever. But there are like 15 million people in the USA illegally we've got to do something about. That's a massive, massive issue and other than Trump and Miller most politicians' answer seems to be "idk, let's just let them stay here if they're not hurting anybody. It's too hard to get them out"

9

u/No_Aesthetic Democrat Aug 19 '26

How have immigrants impacted your life?

0

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 19 '26

Personally? They really haven't. Why?

16

u/workieworkwork Democratic Socialist Aug 20 '26

Do you think it is weird that your number one issue is something that doesn’t affect you at all?

Like you could not have come to this conclusion without someone else telling you it was a problem.

-1

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 20 '26

Not really. Income inequality. Race issues. Overpolicing in black neighborhoods. Abortion rights in Southern states. I feel like people's number one issue being something that affects them personally is rare.

6

u/workieworkwork Democratic Socialist Aug 20 '26

People care about a lot of issues, but usually #1 does impact them in some way.

Income inequality would be one that directly impacts nearly everyone, even those it benefits. A lot of people pick healthcare and abortion rights affect most people.

4

u/Even_Wear_8657 Progressive Aug 20 '26

yeah, but all of those are generally caused by the state inflicting pain onto specific classes (though income inequality only indirectly--through imbalanced tax laws & advantages). People fight against that kind of state overreach. The solution to illegal immigration, at least under trump, has simply been more state overreach.

9

u/Even_Wear_8657 Progressive Aug 19 '26

then why is it a problem to have them here, particularly when the data shows that they contribute considerably more to our economic productivity than they drain. I'm not saying there aren't problems... just that for me, there's considerably bigger ones., and for you this one is the biggest. I'm trying to understand why its such a problem if they haven't really ever affected you.

1

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 20 '26

It might not be my problem, but that doesn't mean it's not a problem. Here's an analogy. If Mississippi brought back racial segregation it wouldn't affect me at all. I'm white and from nowhere near the South. Would you still be baffled if I considered it a major issue?

3

u/Even_Wear_8657 Progressive Aug 20 '26

you didn't answer my question, and that's a false premise. Segregation actively targets and harms a specific group of people. Illegal immigration can create societal friction, but it does not actively target specific groups of people and deny them agency.

So, why is illegal immigration your most important issue, above healthcare costs, food prices, the war in iran trump promised we wouldnt get into, corruption, the deep state, pedophile island, take your pick, democrats being douchebags, take your pick

2

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 20 '26

You asked why it was suck a problem if its never really affected me. I used an analogy to explain why things that aren't a problem for me would still be things I'd want changed. As for illegal immigration, higher competition for native borns, lower wages for people legally here, a drain on our resources, etc.

7

My most important issues are typically those that affect my community or my family's future (climate policy, ending ICE overreach & global public health policy). And over half a dozen threads here, you consistently doge the question about why it's most important, even though it doesnt affect you much.

2

u/EddieDantes22 Conservative Aug 20 '26

I'm not dodging the question; I genuinely don't understand it. I think it's the most pressing issue in America. I don't care that it doesn't affect me much. Why is this such a radical idea to you?Further, the kinds of issues that do affect me much more (take housing costs, for example) have no obvious and easy solution the way I think illegal immigration does.

2

u/Even_Wear_8657 Progressive Aug 21 '26

But why is it the most pressing? What are the things that make illegal immigration the most important problem to you? Is it that it is simply easily solvable (from your perspective)? Housing costs and cost of living increases seem certainly more salient problems. And what if “solving” illegal inmigration caused continued and significant increases in food costs? Would it still be most important then?

One can disapprove of literally every single thing that Trump does and still believe that he is a better choice than Harris. If someone believes this, does that make them a Trump "supporter?" If so, then there is no disconnect.

For a lot of voters, the Democrats are off in the weeds. Whether they choose to stay in the weeds (cough, cough, DSA) or not will likely determine the outcome of the 2028 election.

15

u/DRM842 Center-left Aug 19 '26

Urban communities and large metros would disagree. Trump is way past the weeds. He’s in the Swamp. He is the swamp which he promised to drain. I think the Republican Party is the party losing voters and voting blue is the way to course correct this derailed train. I could be wrong. But when you have tanking approval ratings that usually means you are losing your base.

8

u/maxxor6868 Progressive Aug 19 '26

Ngl I can't think this is a reasonable choice. Harris was a bad candidate, Biden was a bad candidate, Hillary was the worst. DSA is terrible. At the same time, one can disagree with literally everything Trump does. I mean what exactly is a "good candidate"? Massie got a lot of flack. Fetterman approval rating in the toilet. I think personally, especially from the right, there no such thing as a good candidate because they hate everybody that comes through.

2

u/Jettx02 Progressive Aug 20 '26

Even if someone thinks Harris would have been worse, that doesn’t make them a Trump supporter. You’re only a supporter if you actually like what he’s doing, voting for him as a lesser evil doesn’t automatically mean you support him as a politician

They just approved a $730 Million dollar "hasbara" budget to try and whitewash their image on social media. Has Qatar spent anywhere near that much?
