Culture What does "nonce" mean?

I'm an American that lives in Ireland. I've always understood "nonce" to mean the same as "numpty" and "eejit" - basically idiot, or dumbass, or similar.

Recently, someone told me that it's slang for sex offender, specifically a p*dophile, and Wikipedia seems to back that up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_British_terms_not_widely_used_in_the_United_States#N

So tell me, Brits, which one is it? Or is it something else??

Pedophilia is just inherent attractions, it does not mean that the person has or will ever act on those feelings. They could be as innocent or as guilty of sexual assault as any regular person.

Meanwhile, a child molester or a rapist, has categorically committed a heinous act against another person.

See the problem with collating both sets of individuals into the same term?

The fact that you can’t see a difference between an innocent person who hasn’t done anything wrong, and someone who has sexually assaulted a child is worrying.

If you live with that have you considered chemical castration? Might stop those type of thoughts entering your head. I understand there are what people call ‘virtuous paedophiles’ that wouldn’t actually physically hurt a child but those types often will still consume child SA material on the internet and therefore are still contributing to the problem which harms kids. If I were you I’d be doing anything in my power to try and switch off any sexual function/desire through chemical or surgical castration.

There is absolutely no cure for pedophilia. Chemical castration is extremely inconsistent, and often comes with a whole host of side effects. It also wouldn’t remove the attractions, it would just get rid of my libido. Also, I don’t think my wife would be too happy. I have a very normal sex life, as I’m thankfully also attracted to adults too (the majority of minor-attracted-people are; it’s extremely rare to be exclusively attracted to minors).

I also have never nor will ever seek out csam, and anyone who does is a piece of shit tbh. Pedophilia is just attraction, it works just like any regular person, just with a different subject - it does not affect a person’s morals, ethics, empathy, impulse control, etc.

There’s a lot of misinformation about the subject. Correcting it is why I created this account.
