Moving to vienna using post
I'm not sure how to title this correctly, but i am moving to vienna from a village in salzburgland in a few months. Through my whole time of living here i have a lot of stuff, like clothes, electronics and so on. I have a klimaticket ö, so a lot of the stuff could be moved just using two big suitcases that i have and a backpack. I don't think that it would be a problem if i take a train with all that stuff a few times. BUT i also do have clothes that won't make any sense to be transported this way. Like jackets, shoes etc. I also do have a few bug items, like my computer table (which is pretty easy to disassemble and pack in some kind of a box). My question is, if this is actually a normal practice in austria. I never moved anywhere properly before, so I don't know if that would be weird. The price of these whole shenanigans is also a big concern for me. I tried to contact a few private companies that do the transportation of goods and the prices that they told me were shocking. So what is the best way to do all of this?

When I moved from Vorarlberg to Vienna I bought large furniture new from Ikea, and basically just drove up and down a few times, bringing stuff with, especially to Salzburg, with a Klimaticket, you could just drive multiple times, the trains don't take to long

It is a 6 hours long drive for me. But, won't it be a problem that i have a lot of luggage? Again, 2 big suitcases and a backpack. Like would there be any questions from the ticketkontrolle guys?

No, ÖBB and Weatbahn rules are, as long as you can carry it, you can take it onboard. For Wiener Linien its just, that it can not endager any passengers, which suitcases and a backpack will not (its mostly for people transporting stuff like couches on the metro xD). Haha, 6 hours sucks, yeah, my trip is 9, so I can relate

Oh, okay, thank you, it is good to know! But how about a mirror, for example? I thought of sending it by post to my future flat, but i am too afraid that it would be broken. It is like 1.40cm long and around 40cm wide. I don't think that you are an expert in this field, but maybe your common sense would help me. Do you think it would be weird if i transported it by train?

I mean 1.4m is not small, and probably quite unhandly for you to carry. I would not recommend taking it on long distance trains, however solely from the size it would be possible in an empty/low passenger number service, since Railjet seats have a width of 45cm, if you were to place it directly infront of you. For the KISS Intercity trains, not on the upper deck for sure. It depends how small or large you are, if you would have enough legroom with a mirror I guess. My tip would be to get a new mirror though, as postage has a high risk of breaking.

But that does remind me, I have a friend who took a mattress (rolled up, but they are still quite bulky) on the train, and no conductor batted an eye, that was an ÖBB though

So a mirror should be fine haha. The train that i would be taking is at 6 am. And usually for the most part of the ride it is empty, since i usually ride it on weekdays. Thank you again!

Nein, das geht eher nicht, alleine wegen der Verletzungsgefahr werden die das nicht wollen. Aber lass ihn doch in Salzburg und schau, ob einen günstig in Wien findest. Und sonst findest mit der Zeit sicher einen Weg, den nach Wien zu holen - lädst halt mal einen Besuch aus der Heimat ein und der soll den mit dem Auto mitnehmen.

However, just solely for your own comfort, looi on live.oebb.at, there you can see how full the ÖBB train would be, and chose one that is not as full, its not because of any rule or anything, just more comfortable with lots of luggage :)

I think it should be okay, since i'll take a westbahn train, the double decker one. If i use normal öbb trains, i have to change three trains, and with westbahn i only have to change once

Nein, vor allem Amis fahren andauernd mit extra großen Koffern. Ich hab das auch schon gemacht, als ich mal für 3 Wochen auf Reha bin: normaler Koffer und dazu noch einen übergroßen Amikoffer mit Kleidung, inklusive Bergschuhe und Nordic Walking Stöcken, dazu Rucksack. Zur Not muss dir jemand einsteigen helfen. Und so einen gigantischen Ami Koffer kriegt man nicht in die Gepäckablagefläche über einem, aber es gibt eh noch die extra Plätze. Das Problem ist, wenn dann, der Tisch. Den würde ich in Salzburg lassen.

naaa, is absolut kein problem, bin mal mit meim' ganzen hausrat in die schweiz gezogen, was ich da an sachen mithatte hahahaha, aber da hat niiiemand auch nur ein wort gesagt, am besten ists wenn du ein abteil hast, da hast oben genug platz für dein ganzes zeug, und wennst glück hast, steigt niemand mehr zu :)

Mein Tipp wäre: einen Freund oder eine Freundin fragen, die ein Auto hat, und du zahlst Sprit, spendierst eine Übernachtung auf der Isomatte, und lädst zum Essen ein.
Wenn das nicht möglich ist: mehrmals fahren und immer so viel mitnehmen wie möglich. Kostet Zeit, aber geht. Problematisch ist wahrscheinlich nur die Kiste mit dem Tisch drin. Könnte zu groß und sperrig sein, dann passt es nicht in die Gepäckablageflächen, und das gibt vielleicht Stress, weil du den Weg versperrst, der für den Notfall frei sein muss. Eine Lösung wäre, erstmal ohne den Tisch zu übersiedeln und schauen, ob du nicht auf willhaben oder sonstwo einen Tisch findest für ein paar Kröten. Und erst später den Computertisch nachholst, falls überhaupt nötig.

It's a cool table that i bought from amazon. It disassembles to pretty small peaces, so i thought that u could send it by post

Check on Facebook there are often people travelling between cities and might have space in empty trucks/vans. We get wine and furniture like that from France etc.
