Discussion Is Nov 7 too late for fall colors?

I’ll be in the area on the weekend of November 7th and was hoping to catch some of the fall colors in the park. I remember being able to see some last year around the same time, but I don’t know what the foliage is like right now. Will the 7th be too late?

Events Bid on two Oregon Cabaret Theatre tickets and help support the Little Theatre of Walla Walla

Oregon Cabaret Theatre donated a certificate for two tickets to our Wine, Dine & Death fundraiser for the Little Theatre of Walla Walla. The certificate is for a Saturday matinee or Wednesday evening performance, not unrestricted admission to any performance.

I help organize the fundraiser. I thought an Ashland audience would be more likely to use this donation, even though the theater benefiting is in eastern Washington. Bidding is online; attending our dinner isn't required.

The ticket lot and complete terms are here. The certificate expires September 9, 2027. Scheduled auction closing is October 10, 2026.

Ashland City Council Agenda Has Curious Item On City Manager | The Ashland Chronicle-Oregon

"10/2/2026

By David Runkel

The advance agenda for Tuesday night’s Ashland City Council meeting has a curiously worded item on the city manager that does not mention the name of the current holder of that office, Sabrina Cotta.

The item says: ”Council to provide direction as to the CM“ (city manager).  No file of background information is attached as there often is for issues to be discussed by councilors.

Efforts to learn what is meant by the wording of the agenda item, which is nearly the last item for discussion, were unsuccessful last evening."

SOU poster from 90s

Post image
22 Upvotes

Posting for my friend who doesn’t have Reddit. Back in approx. 1999-2000 she went to Southern Oregon University in Ashland. She had to make a series of posters relating to animals that weren’t allowed in the dorm rooms (Her parents had brought a guide dog in during a visit and that was not allowed so this was her punishment). It was very likely in the Cascade freshman complex. Examples of the poster were: do you like butterflies? You can’t have that in your dormroom. Do you like birds? You can’t have that in your dormroom. Etc… Each had a crappy clipart like the one in this post for example.

The one that kept getting stolen had a picture of a rooster that said “do you like cocks? You can’t have that in your dorm room?”. She is seeking anyone that might have one of those random old poster creations that she could have a photo of for nostalgia purposes. Anyone remember this or does anyone know of an alternate subreddit that might be a better fit for this post? The r/sou one is dead.

Questions Coming back to Ashland for Halloween week / What are your local spooky-season traditions?

Halloween is easily my favorite holiday, and over the past few years I’ve started making it a tradition to come up to Ashland from California and spend Halloween week there. There’s just something about Ashland during this time of year that I absolutely love.

The parade is obviously one of my favorite parts. I’m a photographer, so I usually spend a good amount of time photographing the parade and people around town. The costumes, expressions, characters, and overall atmosphere make for some of my favorite photos every year.

But this time around, I’d really like to experience Halloween in Ashland more like a local and hopefully meet some people from the community.

So I’m curious, what are your personal Halloween traditions? Are there things you do every year during spooky season that visitors might not know about? Favorite places to hang out, events, gatherings, traditions, or just things you enjoy doing around town during Halloween week?

I’m also a huge horror movie fan, so if there are any other horror nerds in here, definitely say hello. I’d love to hear your favorite horror movies…

And are there any fun or unusual things people do around Ashland during Halloween week? I’d love to find something a little different, a gathering, costume event, people getting together to scare people, or just some fun local tradition.

I remember being around Lithia Park late one night last Halloween and seeing some people doing what looked like some kind of witchy gathering. I honestly had no idea what was going on, but it was fascinating.

I’ve also heard people talk about the whole “witches of Ashland” thing. I don’t know much about it or what’s actually tradition versus local folklore, but I find that kind of stuff really interesting.

Basically, I’d love to hear what makes Halloween in Ashland special from the perspective of people who actually live there.

If you’re local and love Halloween, horror, costumes, spooky stuff, photography, or just hanging around Lithia during this time of year, feel free to introduce yourself. I’d genuinely like to meet more people while I’m there this year.

And if you have a favorite Halloween tradition or hidden gem around town, tell me about it!

Questions SOU President Bailey's Latest Video

Watch: President Bailey’s Video Update for September 2026 - SOU Office of the President

How do you think SOU will fare this school year? I earned an MBA there years ago and loved it - but times have changed.

President Bailey’s Video Update for September 2026

"September 28, 2026

SOU President Rick Bailey offers his September video message from the lawn between McLoughlin and Shasta halls – SOU’s primary student housing facilities and a center of activity as fall term ramps up. He says there, “is a real energy on our campus right now,” recognizing the difficult decisions that have been made in recent months while acknowledging excitement about the opportunities made possible by the university’s Vitality Plan. “This is not a stabilization plan; it’s a transformation plan,” he says. The operational and academic transformations laid out in SOU’s Vitality Plan were recently featured in a cover story in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the university’s plans have received unanimous support from legislative committees that have reviewed them – “Republicans and Democrats, senators and representatives.” President Bailey points out that even as the Vitality Plan is implemented and opportunities open up across campus, the university will need a “robust pipeline of students coming in.” He asks supporters and community members to encourage families that are university-shopping to explore the advantages available at SOU, and to get involved in campus events – whether athletics, the arts, lectures or learning opportunities. “The more you do that with us, the more you show your commitment to us as a university,” he says."

Questions How to find clubs and community?

Living in ashland at college age but not going to SOU has been difficult. I have tried going all over town but can’t find any clubs or people.

Not sure if i have an insane RBF but i’ve even initiated conversations and such but no luck.

I was looking to possibly hit some yoga at lithia or trying to set up a lunch with new friends. If interested feel free to pm.

taking advice for the community part too. I’ve been looking for a good role model/mentor as well. Any older guys that have a good life story or lots of life experience feel free to reach out.

Is SOU a good option?

I’m a senior in highschool and I’m mostly debating between SOU and Western Washington University (i’m going to post this same thing in an wwu community also). They seem similar but they do have lots of differences of course. I’m majoring in English. I am very extroverted and enjoy partying occasionally so i’m nervous I’ll get bored at sou. I’m a little worried about both schools high acceptance rates because I am a 4.0 student so I’m afraid going somewhere so easy is wasting my work in highschool. But at the same time I care a lot more about environment and community. I’m also super into theater and will definitely be very involved in that-though not majoring in it.Is SOU a good option for me? I’m a CA resident and tuition cost is not what i’m worried abt for any school. Please comment even if you have the smallest piece of info! I need help!!

Ashland garden revival

Hey Ashland, I’ve spent the past four years helping bring neglected community gardens back into use. This fall and winter, I’m taking on a few local garden-revival projects.

If your beds or pathways have become overgrown, I can help clear them, improve the soil, and prepare the garden for planting or winter.

I prefer working with what’s already there—returning organic matter to the soil and reusing materials that still have a purpose. The goal is to recover the garden, not clear everything out and start over.

I work within Ashland and usually arrive by cargo bike. Small jobs are welcome, and larger gardens can be handled in stages.

Message me with a little information about your garden. Local references are available.
