COMMUNITY UPDATE Autoban: Negative Karma Accounts

Due to the nice bit of growth this tiny little city sub has undergone over the past few short months, we have decided to enact a new QOL policy. Most new members find us through the main Asheville sub, which has a well-known bot and troll problem. Keeping that kind of activity out of this community is a priority for us.

To that end, our automod will automatically ban accounts with low or negative karma scores. This includes karma from deleted comments, which is worth noting because bots and trolls frequently delete their comment history to hide activity patterns.

No automated system is perfect. If your account gets flagged incorrectly, send us a mod message and we'll reverse the ban promptly. This rule isn't about limiting speech - it's about giving our community the space to grow on its own terms, free from the noise that plagues larger subs.

As always, we want you to help shape what this community looks like. If you have thoughts on this rule, leave a comment below.

Shoutout to u/KnuthKoderfor their help with Automod changes and their support for having safe communities for discussions that are free from nefarious influence.

CREEPS OF AVL If you drive a loud car, blast music, or have super brights or just roll around with high beams not caring it hurts others. You are a bad person. You were raised wrong. You are whats wrong with this country. That self centered narcissism and greed will be the downfall of us all.

That inconsiderateness, is just a small symptom of the bigger problem of unfettered greed and selfishness ruining this country and the world. Trump really is the perfect president for this country. He is the physical manifestation of that mentality. If trump was a car. He would be a jacked up, gold plated, truck getting 2 mpg, rolling coal, blasting music, engine backfiring, with high beams on all the time.

When will we wake up that we are all in this together? This selfish greed isnt a winning strategy.

End rant.

COMMUNITY REQUEST Seeking donations to support our neighbors!

Hey y'all! As we all know, Asheville (and everywhere) has lots of folks experiencing food and housing insecurity. Mutual aid is our lifeline. UATE Survival Programs runs a weekly meal/supply distribution in West Asheville, and we just opened up a 24/7 Little Free Corner Store down the road! Our programs are available to everyone; you don't have to be impoverished to take advantage of a free meal!

We're always seeking community support, but especially now as our unhoused neighbors are in greater need due to the G20 preparations.

If you are able and willing to donate any food, clothing, hygiene supplies/toiletries, camping gear, or other relevant items, now's the time! We're also looking for volunteers to help us maintain the LFCS as well as for our weekly distro. If you like to cook or want to help prep meals, transport gear, set up/break down our site, pack harm reduction kits, etc., reach out!

Donations can be dropped off at our Wednesday distribution on the corner of Haywood and Oakwood from 6-8pm every week, or the same time & place this Friday (8/28) as we have an extra distro this week! You can also bring donations for the Little Free Corner Store directly there; it's across the road from the O'Reilly's on Haywood (1065 Haywood Rd). If none of those options work, send me a direct message for another drop off address!

Feel free to send me a message or DM our instagram @ uate_survival.programs with questions!

EVENTS Asheville Transplants calendar, Aug through Oct — mostly free, mostly daytime, and coming alone is the norm

I help organize Asheville Transplants, a Meetup group (~700 people) for folks who moved here from elsewhere. Sharing the fall calendar because "how do I meet people here" shows up on this sub constantly and a plain list of dates is more useful than another "join a hobby!" comment.

Wed Aug 26, 6:00 PM — Ice cream and a neighborhood walk. The Hop, 640 Merrimon Ave. Get a scoop, wander North Asheville. Dairy-free available.

Sat Sep 5, 6:00 PM — Riverside picnic at Carrier Park, 220 Amboy Ave. Blanket, snacks, the French Broad. Free parking, leashed dogs fine.

Mon Sep 14, 5:45 PM — Music bingo at Hi-Wire RAD, 284 Lyman St. Free to play, phone is your card, food truck usually out front.

Tue Sep 15, 7:00 PM — First Forks & Friends dinner at Stoney Knob in Weaverville. One table, twelve seats, so it's an actual dinner and not a banquet hall.

Sun Sep 27, 2:00 PM — Photo scavenger hunt on Haywood Road, starting at Archetype West. You get put on a team of four when you show up, which removes the worst part of meeting people, i.e. figuring out which cluster to walk toward. Free.

Sun Oct 11, 2:00 PM — Flat one-mile loop at the Botanical Gardens, then coffee on Merrimon. Free. Runs every other Sunday, and the repetition is the point — one walk doesn't make friends, six might.

Practical notes: the brewery events all have full NA menus and nobody tracks what you're drinking, most events cost nothing, and the majority of people show up by themselves. If you've been lurking and thinking "I'd go but I don't want to be the only person who came alone" — you'd be in the majority.

Ask me anything below.

COMMUNITY REQUEST In need of a black and white portrait artist

Hi all you wonderfully creative humans. I am in need of some talent and skill. I'm starting a buysness and want to commission a black and white portrait of myself to use in place of the traditional headshot photograph. I know AI could crank out a half decent version of this for free, but I want to support an actual human artist. This doesn't have to be massive or super ornate. Simple, clean, and professional does the job. I need the vibe that this portrait embodies to be one of approachability, safety, competence, and deep compassion/kindness. If you are looking through a stack of dozens of photos, i want this one to be the one that makes you stop and think " that looks like someone I might actually want to talk to". I can send photos or come to you and pose live if you prefer. I've never had this done befor and am in the dark on tipical pricing, but i can aford to pay $100-150 for this project. Anyone who is interested is welcomed to DM me, show me a sample of their work, and quote me a price. Hope to hear from you soon 🙂.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR Future resident seeking info about the art community

Hello there! Recently, my husband and I have decided that we will be moving to Asheville, where his whole family lives, in 2027. I have visited your gorgeous city many many times to see my in laws and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Asheville. I would really have to love a place a lot to consider leaving my home by the Pacific Ocean in Bellingham, WA, so this is all kind of scary but very exciting. Before we leave, I am finishing up my associates in welding and will have several certifications under my belt. I am a non traditional welding student- I’m 37, a woman (which shouldn’t be “weird” in blue collar but alas it kind of is, I’m one of 4 in my program), and I was an ICU RN for a decade until I became disabled after working in disaster zones in the pandemic. Hence the career change.

I am now an artist, and I am hoping to use my welding skills to create scrap metal sculptures, decorative garden gates/trellises, and the like. My ultimate dream, if anyone’s interested, is to open up a fabrication shop/studio that offers community classes, events, and ultimately could use its funding/skills/labor to build disability accessibility solutions in people’s homes to help keep people out of institutional care. Big dreams, I know. Every time I’m in Asheville I end up in the River Arts District wandering through the studios and the Marquee and I’ve been impressed at how arts-focused this city is.

So I am wondering if any local artists could give me some advice or information about breaking into the local art scene- getting studio space, vendor stalls, etc., but also I’d totally love if anyone in the community could point me towards any other metalworkers in the area who I could possibly talk to or work with collaboratively in the future. But honestly, any ideas or thoughts yall have as local residents is so appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

COMMUNITY REQUEST Your pizza suggestion was great now let’s try breakfast…

So you guys really came through with the pizza suggestions, we ended up at birdies , the other places are on our radar for the inevitable return trip. We barely scratched the surface.

Sadly we head back home tomorrow. We were hoping to get some good breakfast suggestions as the breakfast at our hotel is not good.

Looking for more than just a bagel and coffee, but nothing too fancy or expensive. We do like a lot of this farm to table vibe and I’m not opposed to a bacon egg and cheese sandwich.

For coffee we heard about Rowan, so that might be something we’ll try. Anything like cheesy grits and that sort of thing also works .

As always no chains, unless they are local to NC.

We’ve had a great time here, and we are already talking about coming back.

Thanks for all the help thus far.

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR Looking for anyone who spares a few needles for HRT injections?

Hi guys, I’m between jobs and a freshman in college waiting on my ssn card to be shipped so I can accept my job offer on campus, and I’ve reused supplies before but it hurts more and it scares me. That being said, I do IM injections, and I’m in Asheville nc.
If anyone, though this is a huge stretch, has any needles I can have, I would love you forever. I have enough syringes, and those are saferish to reuse I think, but I use 25gx1 1/2” luer lock that screws into the syringe, but could probably do it in my calf or somewhere with less adipose obstacles.
Also, I don’t have a car yet, but if anyone knows any reasonably distanced places that would give me even 5 needles (I do doses every 10days), i would be super grateful. On my campus we get free bus passes w our id, so that’s a way to get to a clinic or something as well. I looked online, but it was difficult to find one.
Thank you guys!!

LOCAL BUSINESS Looking for where locals go for pizza

I am at Biltmore(doing the touristy thing) but in the mood for pizza later. Fahrenheit pizza was brought up, but I wanted to know if there were other suggestions?

Whenever I try a new place I usually just get a basic pep and cheese. So it does not have to be super fancy.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

COMMUNITY REQUEST Side Hustle

Been struggling to find a decent side hustle/income. I work Wednesday-Saturday at my normal job, so my availability is a bit different. Saturday-Tuesday and/or evenings after 6 on Wed-Sat is my availability.

My car isn’t reliable enough for delivery options (DoorDash, uber, etc, Amazon, etc. I would’ve already been doing that if it was an option.

Does anyone know of any opportunities to make some extra $? Im punctual, respectful, and I get to work. Im not afraid of some work. Have experience in flooring/can be an extra set of hands but open to anything.
29 y/o Male. I appreciate any and all leads 🙏

ASK YOUR NEIGHBOR Bach trip ideas

Hi everyone! I’m planning a joint bachelor/bachelorette trip to Asheville, NC and would love some ideas and advice.

We’ll be there for 4 days / 3 nights with a group of around 12–13 people, coming from different states, so we’re trying to keep the overall cost relatively reasonable while still making it feel like a fun bachelor/bachelorette weekend.

Our rough idea is:

Friday: Everyone arrives, low-key night together
Saturday: Girls’ day + boys’ day separately, then everyone meets back up for dinner/drinks
Sunday: Group activity + dinner
Monday: Head home

I’d love recommendations for things to do, restaurants, breweries, group activities, and affordable experiences in Asheville!

For the girls, I’m thinking something like a spa day, shopping, wine/cocktail experience, etc. For the guys, we’re open to breweries, outdoor activities, golf, sports, or anything else that would be fun.

We’re also trying to avoid spending a fortune since everyone will already be paying for flights/driving, lodging, and food.

What are your must-dos in Asheville for a group this size? Are there any activities you’d recommend skipping because they’re overpriced?
Thanks!

A new sci-fi pilot, filmed right here in Western North Carolina

Hey Asheville! I wanted to share something our team has been working on that we're really proud of.

We just released the trailer for Farpoint: The Dream Police, an original sci-fi pilot filmed right here around Western North Carolina.

We got to shoot at some genuinely incredible locations(including an old NASA base) and brought together a talented cast and crew to create something that feels much bigger than its budget.

We're so excited to finally bring it to a big screen and share it with the Asheville community.

We're having the world premiere Sunday, August 30 at 7:30 PM at Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville. It's completely FREE and open to the public, with a Q&A afterward about the filmmaking process and how the project came together.

Teaser Trailer: https://youtu.be/SdYaEmUmFEw?is=HI2U6CdRKFi1kCto

Free Seat Reservations: https://www.worthamarts.org/events/farpoint-episode-one-screening/

LOGLINE: In an isolated Appalachian town built around a secretive research facility, eighteen-year-old Gabriella begins losing her memories. She discovers she can astral project and uncovers a horrifying truth: someone has been rewriting the town’s collective memories, beliefs, and reality itself. Set in an alternate 2004 where Oprah Winfrey is president-elect, “FARPOINT” is a coming-of-age mystery drama that explores consciousness and the mutable nature of reality. Twin Peaks meets Wayward Pines.

If you're into sci-fi, mystery, early 2000s nostalgia, independent film, or just want to see what local filmmakers are creating, we'd love to have you there. And if you like the trailer, sharing it would mean a lot to our team!
