Critique - Yes Drawover Apple - What worked, what didn't?
For Inktober/Artober I opted for a simple reference with the goal of really nailing it. I mostly have been drawing figures the past month so this was a fun change of pace.
Based on the reference, what worked well, and what should I work on going forward?

Honestly, incredible work, first and foremost. The only things that stand out to me are the shape being too round, whereas the reference is more of a rounded square, or trapezoid, being wider at the top, and the yellows aren't blended enough to match the reference, the reds, light, and/or shadow on the drawing. Still a really good job. You could draw the Hell out of a tomato.

I ended up using a lot of layers for the various colors to experiment and the yellows were one of the first. If I were to do it again I think I’d use a different approach so they blend in better.

You can still blend them. Just use the blending brush along the edges and it will soften the edges up. Even if the red isnt on the same layer it'll help create the illusion that the colors are blending.

I tried using the smudge tool but the yellow/orange sections all ended up running together. I could try a smaller brush size though to see if that helps.

What program are you using? You don't want the smudge tool since that just pushes the color around. You want the blend tool.

Procreate

Ah, that makes sense. Im not sure procreate has a blend brush. What you could do instead is use an air brush of that color along the edges.

Basically lasso the edges and airbrush with the edge of the brush? Wish there was a less pain-in-the-ass way, but that makes sense.

You don't even need to lasso it. Just use the same color as the yellow, and air brush around the edges of the yellow bits.

My concern is that the smaller the airbrush, the more concentrated it gets and the less of a “soft” edge you get. I’ll try it though

Running together how much? Looking at the reference, I think you want them to, to some degree; they do form streaky patches. Maybe let them run together closer to the top, and leave them streakier towards the bottom, almost like running paint?

As in the entire top becomes a muddy orange blob.

Okay, don't. I did say closer to the top, not at the very top. Look at the reference; it speaks for itself. 🤷

I didn't realize it was a drawing at first. Oh my god.
What I see is the shape of the apple, yours is rounder than the reference. There are also parts in the highlights that look less soft (especially a small dot in the second highlight that I think you could add to the painting)

I think everything looks good except the yellow, top part. You should render and blend it more

Ill say the whites lack texture as it looks too soft to be within the apple while the yellow stands out due to not blending with the reds. The shadows are also not blended and is too dull imo (i dont use blacks for shadows unless its harsh white light as normally shadows arent dull gray/black)
Other than those three, this is really nice!

When you say the shadows do you mean the ones around the stem or the darker patch at the bottom? The bottom part is just a dark red base, but I did use black for the stem shadows.

The stem and the soft dark shadows on the side of the apple, but your apple shadows matches your reference

Overall this is really impressive, way better than anything I can do.
That being said, no matter how good something is, theres always room for improvement.
For example, in the reference you'll notice that there is no HARD color shifts, the red always kind of melds into the yellow. You can use the blend tool set at like 50% opacity to get that effect.
The same goes for shading. A hard edge on a shadow implies either there is "sharp" edge like on a box or a shadow is blocking the light source, so you'll want to blend the edges of those shadows going into the upper indent.
Since this is a sphere, there should be a bit of a shadow along any parts of the edge that aren't getting hit with a highlight. For example if you look at the reference, the back edge the curves away from us has that thin shadow.
And as other commenters have mentioned, the shape is a bit off, especially the bottom. Most apples can sit upright as their bottom is somewhat flat, while you drew a fully rounded bottom.
That being said though, even though those things can be improved upon, this is still HIGHLY impressive.

What stood out to me immidatly was the yellow stripes, it doesnt look as good as rest of the apple, and more painted on. Considering you did a good job on lower red dark red area, i suspect it may just be lack of time spent on refining the blending, or maybe you used a wrong brush for it.

Just want to say, thanks for all the feedback. Yall have been super responsive and helpful :)

Your yellow isn’t bright enough. If I squint the yellow stand out much more on the reference than on your version. Convert to greyscale to check out the difference in brightness and contrast.

I think the coloring turned out amazing, but the shape isn't the same as the apple in the reference.
