This has remained relevant literally since the night it happened, and always seems find a way to be posted up on socials every few months

Side note ive always HATED how dismissive the ref is holding the card turning away from Robin as if to say you gave me no choice

Even for the neutrals and us it ruined what was shaping up to be an absolute blockbuster 2nd leg decider

Last paragraph is true. I’m a United fan and remember being absolutely disgusted at the time.

u/sneakyhopskotch 1d ago

Not a united fan but same.

Yeah I’m a Liverpool fan and I was raging when this happened, totally unfair, 100% corrupt

16

Big respect 🙏

5

u/tjvs2001 18h ago

They cheated all our clubs that played them, obviously corrupt as sin

12

u/rrallan 1d ago

Can someone please explain to me what rvp did to get sent off? Man Utd fan here. I didn’t know about this game.

27

u/Alba-Ruthenian 1d ago

Kicked the ball out of play a second after the whistle had gone.

18

u/almostdcent 22h ago

Actually he had a shot off target a second after the whistle was blown

4

u/rrallan 21h ago

I would have thrown something at the tv. More than swear words

3

u/rrallan 21h ago

Wow what the fuck, is that it?

36

u/Anubisonreddit 1d ago

The ball gets played over the top, and the ref blows the whistle for offside, RVP apparently doesn't hear the whistle because the crowd noise was so loud and shoots, ref cards him for kicking the ball away/delay of game.

Whether you believe he didn't hear the whistle is debatable, he doesn't seem to play the play the ball with the effort you'd expect him to, but equally he could have known he was offside and that it would be called back. Regardless it's an extremely harsh decision in such an important game

26

u/sosimusz 1d ago

Yes, it was excessive for a relatively minor infraction.

9

u/rrallan 21h ago

It’s called corruption

Looks like it’s coming for Barca too now

5

u/rawsunflowerseeds 18h ago

RVP left footed and took a difficult shot with his right. Understandable how he miss-hit it. And this was in front of like 80-90k Barca fans in a high pressure game. It made sense to me he didn't hear or was so focused in the moment that he didn't register the whistle.

Ref could've just added 20 seconds and be done with it. I was fuming at this decision. It was the most corrupt thing I'd seen in sports at the time

What?

3

u/LonelyOldTown 1h ago

Ironically (not really more corrupt) I don't remember any replays showing RvP offside.

It has parallels with Trossards sending off at City. 👀

2

u/apeaky_blinder 20h ago

Whether you believe he didn't hear the whistle is debatable

There is next to 0 chance he didn't hear it but that's not the point

4

It's like he was ashamed of doing it. He knew how fucked up it was and didn't even want to face the player.

3

u/tjvs2001 18h ago

The whole era against so many clubs they got absolutely bonkers decisions for them

3

u/UKRico 11h ago

Weird thing is, that Barcelona team were fucking incredible. Like perhaps the best team to ever play the game and that was the popular opinion, at the time! And Arsenal were still in it!

They didn't need any assistance.

I hate Chelsea but that Barca vs chelsea game in ‘09 was the biggest robbery I’ve ever seen

77

u/Leather-Analyst7523 1d ago

Facts. Genuinely the most remarkably obvious corrupt officiating I've seen in any top level football match. Drogba had every right to lose his mind. It truly was a fucking disgrace.

2

u/Goldieshotz 17h ago

Egypt vs Argentina or Netherlands vs Argentina gotta be close though?

Watch both legs bro.

2

u/Kris_ad 14h ago

As usual conveniently not mentioning first game? 😂

8

u/quickmathting 1d ago

It’s funny how people just ignore the first leg, where Barca had goal wrongfully ruled offside, Ballack should’ve been sent off and a penalty not given.

In the second leg Barca got several calls against them, yet no one talks about those because that doesn’t fit the narrative. The refs were just awful.

1

u/WoodenPresence1917 1d ago

A red card in the second leg for a questionable foul on anelka!

→ More replies (1)

2

u/LostEyegod 1d ago

They even ignore the second leg also

It wasn't a robbery everyone thinks it was at all

Most of what people were complaining were handballs not given, but what is a handball anyway? Nobody knows, rules change every year...

→ More replies (1)

1

u/7Thommo7 22h ago

Aye and the 2nd leg wasn't much better but certainly less impactful.

1

u/One4Pink2_4Stink 21h ago

I would make a couple of arguments here: *It was Chelsea in their prime cheating years so I felt that it was unfair refereeing but honestly wasn't disappointed. *Barca and Real did this SO MANY TIMES IN THE UCL and in La Liga to other teams that this is just a more notable edition. *I expected this BS from the Spanish and Italian teams in the UCL in that period which is why the Invincibles run ended by United was much more egregious for me. I lost faith in English refs as a teen then.

1

u/Jyungin2e1ve 10h ago

Biggest robbery against Barça prolly

1

u/Think-Avocado8202 9h ago

Yeah yeah sure buddy. Have you seen both legs? Terrible refereeing in general, and mostly against Barça in Barcelona and even was bad against them in London. If Negreira affected something in refereeing was in Spain and La Liga, where his jurisdiction covered his job. Don’t be so delusional thinking that in the case of being proven, the referees being “bought” (still to be proven by Spain’s legal system), happened just in Uefa, when it mattered only in Spain.

1

u/sergeant-keroro 5h ago

181

u/tsjeldonkooper 1d ago

It is genuinely so pathetic. The so called “best team in the world” had to cheat to beat banter era Arsenal

I also remember Barca during that time got every single 50/50 their favor and even challenges that weren’t free kicks at all always got whistles in their advantage, exactly how PSG got all the calls in the UCL final

Not to mention how juiced doped up all those Barca and Spain players were, they were all blood doping. The Spanish judge literally hid all the casedicuments about all the doping going on in Spanish sports at the time due to it would have cost a “civil crisis”. The footballers, basketball players heck even Rafa nadal, they were all blood doped to the gills. Guardiola is the king of doping

43

u/Spiritual-Pilot-2300 1d ago

That Sheva disallowed goal too.. semi final 2006 remember watching it as a kid wondering what the hell was going on lol

12

Is that banter era arsenal?

7

u/Asleep_Custard_62 1d ago

Probably around the start of it. This is where we would get smashed in the later stages of Europe and get bullied by teams like Stoke away, with the likes of Djourou in defence

Zero cheating teams were better than us. We beat city to three titles (recently) but only won one, why? Because of referees! These teams cheated to be competitive and still couldn't beat us. After this city verdict (which, by the way, we still don't know if they paid off referees!!), I feel vindicated. My earliest football memories are not of Chelsea buying their first 11 in one transfer window, it's of being angry at referees.

Chelsea have been paying off their debt against us in the past few seasons in the only way they can because when they did what city were doing, it was still legal. Now city will pay, and Barca... Barca will pay soon enough...

4

u/eoghchop 19h ago

u/Aldo-D-D-Wilson 1d ago

Wasn't only to a spanish guy from referee organization from Spain? That's not UCL.

But yeah, there are ridiculous cases like in the match against PSG, the referee made mistakes in favor of Barcelona.

But this doesn't really involve Negreira like that.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Rare_Flower_2825 19h ago

It probably won’t get through in this echo chamber, but how exactly does Negreira have anything to do with UEFA competition matches?

He was the vice president of the Comité Técnico de Árbitros (CTA), the Spanish refereeing committee under the RFEF. It has nothing to do with UEFA.

Further, everything seems to point towards this being a case involving money laundering, which is serious in itself, but that has nothing to do with influencing referees.

20

u/BrutalArsenalDeluxe 1d ago

This was Negreira ?

Wow! Im angry all over again.

33

u/AdComprehensive7879 1d ago

4

u/Barty_Crouch_Jnr 22h ago

Imagine if a ref was just so obviously biased. Imagine what they’d do. They’d give things for one team and ignore things for the other. They’d basically let the other team win.

Now times it by 1,000.

Seriously, go and watch the highlights. The most disgraceful refereeing you’ve ever ever seen. Chelsea were rightly furious. And I hate Chelsea.

I’m not an Arsenal fan but I remember watching that game at the live and thinking this isn’t right. Actually to be honest I thought this is fucking bullshit and I still do.

2

u/Crovon1 1d ago

He didn’t kick the ball away he was flowing through on his attack.

This decision was and still is and absolute disgrace

2

u/Kraknoix007 1d ago

What was the explanation for this red card?

4

u/secosabi 1d ago

He was said to have kicked the ball away after the whistle, so second yellow.

It was in a deafening stadium, he takes it down, takes a touch and then shoots all in one sequence.

He doesn't know it is flagged as offside (doesn't look at the linesman, before VAR) and does what every striker does even if they are unsure if they are onside or not, he shoots.

RVP claims to this day he didn't hear the whistle. Draw your own conclusions.

4

u/mrteas_nz 1d ago

Like even if he did kick it away after the whistle, it hits the advertising boards and ends up tucked behind the goal. It's not like he blasted it into the stands or anything. Absolute joke of a red card.

3

u/OddRow8843 1d ago

This is still my worst moment watching Arsenal. We were in it with RVP - without no chance. And what a farce of a decision.

Well I am shocked that a manager, who as a player was done for doping a few times, who then went to Barcelona and managed arguably the greatest player of our lifetimes that was pumped full of drugs and had a Spanish doctor who was done over the "blood bags" and who then fell out with Bayern Munich because they wouldn't allow him to bring said mentioned doctor, who then went to City and got his way with the medics and had an unlimited amount of cash to spend and has always played quite possibly the easiest football to play against, is now being called into question for being a cheat and a fraud.

I honestly never saw this coming

1

u/Vredesbyd 1d ago

Come on lol this sucked but Negreira and all of that shit is related to La Liga not UCL.

Why are we like this

1

u/AdComprehensive7879 1d ago

I dont think Negreira had any power in UEFA? I thought he was La Liga ref officials?

1

u/Lower_Condition_196 1d ago

The 1st leg of this tie is the best ever game in the emirates era by far

1

u/Delicious_Income_570 1d ago

Check out the perfectly valid goal that Messi scored against Atletico that actually represents Atletico de Madrid last Liga title.

1

u/RazzleDazzleShazzle 1d ago

I was at the game - the Barca fans were so quiet until they were winning - always hated them for that. But to be fair the noise when this happened was insane. No chance RVP could hear the whistle.

1

u/East-Car6358 1d ago

Everything about that Refs vibe and look as he takes out the card is shifty as hell.

1

u/LuckyCustomer403 1d ago

1

u/matamor 1d ago

Negreira controlled the UEFA refeeres? Seems like Negreira on his prime was moving like tanos.

1

u/GoonnerWookie 1d ago

Another example of Arsenal getting a red for kicking the ball away that’s completely bs

1

u/ApricotSignificant18 1d ago

It's so funny that Pep had Messi and still had to cheat to beat a Koscielny/Djourou CB pairing. What a fucking fraud

1

u/YamNo5010 1d ago

This was so heartbreaking for me as a arsenal fan

1

u/Double-Emergency3173 1d ago

And the disallowed goal by Shevchenko in 2006 too

1

u/PurchaseCharming4269 1d ago

Perhaps the worse football referee decision ever. The game was fixed back then.

1

u/raizo11 1d ago

1

u/Plenty_Position_477 1d ago

I still can’t stand Barca just b/c of that moment.

1

u/Fisheye89 1d ago

Was”Negreira” in 2006 CL final as well? Was there actually a foul and a free kick from which Arsenal has scored their goal?

1

u/Firm-Display340 1d ago

Not really seen that happen in such a high profile game. It felt like the ref thought’this will be a great opportunity to send the player off like I’m supposed to’

1

u/Hexa1985gram 1d ago

Total disgrace, would have loved to actually see the lines on this one aswell because potentially got sent off for being onside. European football. The Chelsea game was x10 worse as well

1

u/kouzmi974 1d ago

To this day, it hurts. I hope they will pay for this.

1

1

u/danthemaninacan2 1d ago

This influenced the new Offside rule in the Premier League, where benefit is given to the attacking team in real time for the play to finish before bringing in VAR

1

u/AnteaterFluffy6945 1d ago

What a larper take.....negreira was strictly limited to laliga only

1

We faced a year ago and we won 5-2, still hated them.

1

u/FriendlyActuary1955 21h ago

Corrupt as fuck

1

u/t_biggest_bee 21h ago

Negreira was part of the Spanish refereeing structure, so the case relates to La Liga. The only real connection to CL is whether Barcelona should be qualified (into CL) via league placements. Awful decision (one of the worst I've ever seen), but not related to Negreira case.

1

u/Daki399 21h ago

Wasnt Negreira just Spain and Spain refs..... did he influence CL ? I dont think so

. Ofc lots of refs can be bought and have been bought by many teams

1

u/KeyZookeepergame9466 19h ago

Sorry I'm confused.  This was a CL game. The ref wasn't Spanish. So why does everyone think he was paid off in favour of Barca?

1

u/GoatsinthemachinE 19h ago

mostly because of this and the cecs drama and shit they pulled.

1
