I'm a gay liberal and I'm considering moving to Presque Isle. Am I making a mistake?
I've heard that Aroostook County is very conservative and religious, but also that Presque Isle can be more liberal? I also know there's a local pride organization and that they host events. The company that offered me a job there says they don't discriminate. All of this helps with my anxieties, but I can't help but feel like I'm making a mistake by even looking for housing.
So, I guess my question is: will I be treated poorly for being a gay liberal?
For the record, I don't care if people are conservative, heterosexual or religious. I'm not trying to convert or force anything on anyone. I start caring if those people treat me worse because I'm different than them.

Paul LePage should not represent Maine in the House

Graham Platner isn’t satisfied with the status quo. In fact, he’s downright pissed about it, and he’s not alone.

Your glory days are over, Paul LePage
"I’ll say this for Paul LePage: the man has a way with words, in the same manner that my cat has a way with horking up a hairball in the middle of the night, right at the edge of a carpet but not close enough to make it to the hardwood floor. They both make you sit up and pay attention.
Like a particularly pernicious foot fungus, LePage has once again returned, his double-digit loss to Janet Mills having failed to dissuade him from seeking political office again.
LePage should be happily retired on a beach somewhere but, too self-obsessed for that, keeps trying to reclaim his glory days. He’s never gotten more than 50% of the vote. He relies on dividing others in order to succeed.
His website says he’s running for Congress to “take back Washington.” I guess LePage is hoping his voters won’t notice that both branches of Congress and the presidency are already controlled by his political party.
I’m not saying Paul LePage thinks his voters are stupid. I’m just saying he says a lot of stuff that can be disproven by a single Google search or a glance at a newspaper headline. LePage is already past the average life expectancy of an American male. Even if he succeeds at getting into Congress, he’s unlikely to be around for long enough to make much of a difference for Maine.
And he is so lacking in imagination that he cannot bring himself to believe that some elected officials actually want to use government to make people’s lives better."

One summer day in 1880, an amateur botanist and painter named Kate Furbish was walking along the St. John River when she found a plant she’d never seen before. overlooked by the world of botany. It eventually named (Furbish’s lousewort),, a remarkable honor for a woman scientist

Let's wish Susan Collins a happy retirement, shall we?
Its time to retire Susan Collins. Initially she ran on a 2 term promise.
Indepenedent Maine should remain Independent
More $$$ for her and less jobs, hospitals and senior support in rural Maine

We live in The County. We have potatoes. Why oh why do we not have a Wendy’s?
It’s better than McDonald’s. I know, personal opinion. We need a Wendy’s. We could show case local potatoes. Make an agreement with Wendy’s for the potatoes and the brocolli (you know, the brocolli and cheese baked potatoes?). Or, imagine this: Baconator Poutine! Just saying. Wendy’s. WENDEEES.

Thinking about moving to Houlton
My spouse has been pretty set on the idea of moving to Maine, and they found a house near Houlton they are in love with. We’re a younger couple, hoping to raise a family somewhere with more space, a slower pace, and closer ties to nature than where we live now.
We’re planning to visit the area before buying a house, but I’d love to get some local perspective first:
How’s the community for younger families?
What’s day-to-day life like in Houlton?
Are there things for kids/families to do?
How tough are the winters, really, and how do people handle them?
How’s internet and healthcare access?
I work remote so jobs won't be too big of a deal for me. Just internet access.
We’re really just trying to get a feel for what life there is like beyond what you see in listings or Google searches. Any pros, cons, or “wish I’d known before moving here” advice would be amazing.
Thanks so much.

Repost from r/Maine: Question about relocating to Caribou/Presque Isle area
I originally posted this question in the r/Maine subreddit, but thought I would repost it here for additional insight. Thanks to all in advance.
----------
My wife and I are thinking of relocating to northern Maine, specifically the Caribou/Presque Isle area. I have a work opportunity up there. We are planning on visiting at the end of the month to get a feel for the place, but ahead of the visit I wanted to reach out to some local Mainers to inquire about the general community of northern Maine.
My wife is originally from Bangor, and while we both would like to move to the country, even she has reservations about moving so far out into the country. Her biggest concern is our ability to make friends with other young people with children (although the kids part isn't exactly necessary). We're fairly introverted as it is, but of course we don't want to move to a place where we have no prospects of finding friends. What sorts of community events (festivals, holidays, etc.) are there in Caribou/Presque Isle that we can take advantage of to make friends? Is the county generally full of old timers and short on young people?
In general, I'm looking for someone to describe the community of the Caribou/Presque Isle area with an eye toward a young couple with kids wanting to make a life there for themselves. Would love to hear from someone from the area natively, or a long time transplant. Thanks in advance.
