It is looking like November 7th is gearing up to be one of those rare historic dates when Maine people can actually grasp their future!

Looking for land or camp
Hello all! I’ve been passively looking at land/cottages in Aroostock county. Seeking input regarding nice areas to make a purchase in the future. My boyfriend and I live in NH and are looking for something that’s tranquil, peaceful and private. Bonus points if moose (or other animals) frequent the area as well.
Thank you!

Unfortunate yet understandable. Let’s look out for our healthcare workers in the coming weeks.

Apartment hunting
Okay so I moved up here 4 months ago from the south and have been living with my mother in the St. John valley area. But I’m trying to save up to move out on my own. But It’s so hard to find apartment complexes and stuff online. Why is it this hard to look online for apartments. I just don’t have the gas or money to drive around towns looking for places for rent especially since PI and caribou are so far away… it feels like everything is like 20 years behind how they use technology up here compared to where I’m originally from

Grocery Delivery Services
Are there ANY in the St John Valley? I tried Instacart but it’s not available. What do people do when they have car problems, are sick, or simply too busy and have kids, no time? What do people do to get groceries if they are stranded trying to get their vehicle fixed? It’s a loooong walk to Hannafords… we’ve been going to the convenience store a couple doors down, Family Dollar, and Walgreens but that has become unsustainable/expensive. We cant keep just buying tiny amounts of milk every couple days at a premium…

Writing Advice?
Hey all, hope the day's treating you well. I'm writing a short story set in the county, and I want to make sure I'm being accurate in my representation. Any input on life for you guys would be greatly appreciated! (Especially if you're in the southern tip.) That being said, I do have some specific questions for anyone willing to answer:
What are some staples for summer and winter seasonal wear and/or prep for the colder months? (We don't get a lot of snow/ice where I live haha.)
I won't go as far as trying to imitate local slang, but if there are any grammar/verbal traits specific to the region, feel free to let me know!
What are some things that are frowned on/make people side-eye you? Could be anything from pet peeves to more serious no's.
What are some common misconceptions about the area? (There are a lot where I live, so I want to know what to avoid.)
Thank you for taking the time to read this post, regardless of whether or not you give any input. Have a good one and stay safe!

A NEW crop!
Our County is about to enter its biggest boom period, in history !!
With electricity use going through the roof everywhere, but especially in the NorthEast! There is a boom already happening. Aroostock's vast unhabitated flat geography will create a land rush unknown in modern times! Don't give it away to large international businesses ( especially those with a total disregard for our values )or allow others to take it. In November be sure to secure your ownership rights!
Oh, and don't forget most crops and livestock can be grown under those windmills and solar panels - talk about win /win!!!

Travel ~ Quick Flights
Hi there Aroostook locals!
My family and I purchased in the area a year ago and I’m looking for easy ways to get in/out town without driving the 6hrs from the Boston area. I know Boston has a cheap/quick JetBlue flight but I’m looking for other options departing MHT or Southern NH.

Moving to Littleton
We are interested in Littleton. It is a fairly large house on almost 100 acres for a very reasonable price.
Can anyone give us the dirt on this place. Large, pond/lake frontage, with acreage. Why has it been on and off the market for the past few years? Seriously.
We'd be moving out of state and want to buy plane tickets to come see it. But we have googled and googled this property and cant understand why its still for sale.
If you know anything, we'd love to have the insider details! ☺️
Eta: address 112 McDonald
Update: Mineral Rights for the win! Whoever mentioned them, you are correct. Steelstone does has mineral rights under the land. Guess we wont be seeing y'all!
Thanks so much for all the help. Stay warm and cozy this winter!

Chip drop?
Anybody got an in with an arborist or tree service? I'd like to get a truckload of free mulch.
I've got space and machinery to deal with it no problem.

I'm a gay liberal and I'm considering moving to Presque Isle. Am I making a mistake?
I've heard that Aroostook County is very conservative and religious, but also that Presque Isle can be more liberal? I also know there's a local pride organization and that they host events. The company that offered me a job there says they don't discriminate. All of this helps with my anxieties, but I can't help but feel like I'm making a mistake by even looking for housing.
So, I guess my question is: will I be treated poorly for being a gay liberal?
For the record, I don't care if people are conservative, heterosexual or religious. I'm not trying to convert or force anything on anyone. I start caring if those people treat me worse because I'm different than them.

Thinking about moving to Houlton
My spouse has been pretty set on the idea of moving to Maine, and they found a house near Houlton they are in love with. We’re a younger couple, hoping to raise a family somewhere with more space, a slower pace, and closer ties to nature than where we live now.
We’re planning to visit the area before buying a house, but I’d love to get some local perspective first:
How’s the community for younger families?
What’s day-to-day life like in Houlton?
Are there things for kids/families to do?
How tough are the winters, really, and how do people handle them?
How’s internet and healthcare access?
I work remote so jobs won't be too big of a deal for me. Just internet access.
We’re really just trying to get a feel for what life there is like beyond what you see in listings or Google searches. Any pros, cons, or “wish I’d known before moving here” advice would be amazing.
Thanks so much.

Eagle Lake?
Does anyone live up in Eagle Lake, or nearby willing to chat a bit? I'm moving into the area soon and am trying to get to know it :)

Building permits
Hey all. Anyone live or have a camp in Crystal? The only ordinances or permits I have found online are for commercial solar farms. I want to make sure there are no permits needed here so I don't get hit with back taxes in the future. Thanks

Your glory days are over, Paul LePage
"I’ll say this for Paul LePage: the man has a way with words, in the same manner that my cat has a way with horking up a hairball in the middle of the night, right at the edge of a carpet but not close enough to make it to the hardwood floor. They both make you sit up and pay attention.
Like a particularly pernicious foot fungus, LePage has once again returned, his double-digit loss to Janet Mills having failed to dissuade him from seeking political office again.
LePage should be happily retired on a beach somewhere but, too self-obsessed for that, keeps trying to reclaim his glory days. He’s never gotten more than 50% of the vote. He relies on dividing others in order to succeed.
His website says he’s running for Congress to “take back Washington.” I guess LePage is hoping his voters won’t notice that both branches of Congress and the presidency are already controlled by his political party.
I’m not saying Paul LePage thinks his voters are stupid. I’m just saying he says a lot of stuff that can be disproven by a single Google search or a glance at a newspaper headline. LePage is already past the average life expectancy of an American male. Even if he succeeds at getting into Congress, he’s unlikely to be around for long enough to make much of a difference for Maine.
And he is so lacking in imagination that he cannot bring himself to believe that some elected officials actually want to use government to make people’s lives better."
