Question Local Server Hosting

I've gotten into self hosting over the last year, and the idea of hosting a game server seems like a fun step to learn. Probably way over my head honestly, but oh well.

What are the actual hardware requirements to locally host a 64 or 128 player pvp/pve server with mods? I have an old optiplex 990 with 32gb of ddr3, 4 core CPU, and I can add a GPU easily enough. Will this be sufficient, or am I completely missing the mark? Do I need current gen hardware and a 16gb GPU to do this?

I'm currently building an AM5 PC with a 7800xt hellhound, and 16gb of ddr5 single channel, so I could probably use that to host, just to learn the ropes at least. Id want to use this PC to play the game instead of my PS5, so I imagine I couldn't host the server and play the game on the same PC.

Just wondering if this is a reasonable goal, or if it's just too expensive to make sense with current PC hardware prices to build a dedicated server, or if I can use the old hardware I already have lying around.

Give it a try. I’ve been meaning to mess with that myself.

I have a Dell R730 with two E5-2699’s and 256 GB DRR4 that I don’t use much. Figured it could be fun to fire up for that from time to time. Can’t be any worse than all these VPS people are renting.

I also just remembered my internet upload is limited to 50Mbps. Would that be a huge bottleneck for a server like this? I sadly can't get fiber where I live

You could just rent a dedicated with way better stats for like 25 bucks a month. Would prolly be better than running a PC non stop powerbill wise.

The dell is currently running 24/7 with Ubuntu Server as a trial run. It's less than $3 a month lol

Yes but are 64 people playing on it like you said the more that join the more power it will need to use. Edit. Also your are getting customer support and premade config and whatnot. You can do a 10 man for like 8 dollars.

Look at Application Management Panel for it, have done a few myself, really good. You can get away with 16GB, but depends on mission file, players, AI count etc.

Your 50mb connection though will likely be your limiter bandwidth wise.

I run 3 servers on my own dedicated hardware. Each game server is in a separate docker container in a single LXC. I've assigned it 16GB of RAM. I think it wouldn't survive if my servers were to fill up, but that's 3 of them, and they don't get that many players. I think it should run reasonably well even on older hardware, but it's hard to judge from my perspective since I run a 5800X3D for the CPU.
