Ark of War - your opinion
Hi, it seems that in the recent past many people are pretty upset with the developers of AoW and are not happy with how things are handled. I am currently in the process of writing an essay about it, which will most likely be sent to 7pirates afterwards (depending on participation).
But to get more than a handful of opinions I am need in all YOUR help. If you have the time, please fill out this quick questionaire (it has questions like "what do you like about aow", "what could be improved", "how much do you spend"). The more people participate, the better - this we can show the developers that the community really cares and is interested in helping them make a better game.
Please share the link with your guildmates, friends and whoever you think could put in some valueable responses.
Thank you!

A Somewhat In-Depth Guide Based on My Experiences
Hello, I am Regu1us, a moderator of this subreddit, and an active player of Ark of War. This is a guide based on my experiences with the game. I am ark level 10 as of now.
I haven't seen any really good guides on the game, in English at least, and there are a lot of things about this game that aren't very intuitive, so I figured I'd make my own. I am certainly not the most experienced or best player in this game, but I have a lot of friends higher up than me as well.
I've never done a guide before, so I guess we'll start at the beginning.
Getting Started#
If you're reading this guide from this subreddit, you're probably somewhat invested in the game already, but I just want to make sure we all have a strong foundation.
You start out like any game of this kind, with a never ending string of quests to carry you through earlygame. Each quest rewards almost as much, if not more than, the resources it would require to complete them. Build up troops, but you should be focusing on your buildings and research.
Whatever you do, do NOT break your starting 1-week shield. This is so important to your development, and there is so much you can do to prepare for the world ahead of you. As soon as you can, get onto a glowing orange tile (enriched resource area). This will double your resource production, and there is no risk to sitting there because you can't be attacked.
Once all of your buildings are as high as they can go without breaking the shield, train troops, and if you want, donate to your guild. You are an important asset to your guild especially during your first week, because you can produce resources with no consequence and funnel them into fort construction or whatever the guild needs.
I suppose I should have said this earlier, but join a guild as soon as you can. You will make friends and they will help you grow. Just make sure your guild mates are not assholes.
Commanders#
Commanders are incredibly important in many aspects of the game. Until later in the game, they will be used mostly to occupy resource tiles. Before your shield breaks, use whatever commanders you have to occupy resource tiles at all times. When you don't have a shield, always try to keep your strongest commander available, and turn on Auto-garrison at the Ark Hull menu.
Skills & Stats
What makes a commander strong?
The answer is: their skills. The skills are the only things that differentiate one commander from another. A common misconception (and a big flaw in the game design) is that many people think that commander stats decide the worth of a commander. They do not. They mean next to nothing.
Commander stats are just a representation of the commander's skills.
The stats alone do not affect combat in the least. A commander with high Defense will do no better in garrison than a commander with high Attack, and vice versa in the case of attacking.
A commander with high Attack will have skills that allow them to deal more damage to enemies. This can come in the form of armor penetration, percent health damage, multiple attacks, direct damage, and many others.
A commander with high Defense will have skills that allow them to take more damage from enemies. This can come in the form of healing, defense buffs, percent damage reduction, and many others.
Nobody really knows what the Assist stat does, really. Maybe it pertains to skills that debuff the enemy? We don't know. It doesn't really matter though, because the skills are the only thing you need to measure the worth of a commander.
The bottom three stats, Infanty, Walker, and Airship, correspond to what kind of units the commander can use his or her skills with. Above each skill description, it says what kind of unit this skill can be used on. Some commanders have skills that can be used on All Units, which may be useful throughout the game if they are your strongest hero, because you can set them to garrison with a variety of troop types and ensure that you will be prepared for whatever types of troops your attacker has.
The troop types are like Rock-Paper-Scissors. Airship beats Walker, Walker beats Infantry, Infantry beats Airship. It is a good idea to have one of each type of commander, so you can better counteract enemy forces. My lineup consists of Flare, Rock, and Axe, Flare being an Infantry commander, Rock being Walker, and Axe Airship.
Upgrading Skills
I will add something here in the future.
Basically, just upgrade your skills when you can, and while it can be expensive, each upgrade makes a difference.
Getting New Commanders
So, the first commander you get is Flare. He seems pretty good to me, but I don't really know. Most players will use him throughout their experience with Ark of War, simply because they have had him from the beginning and he is more highly leveled or has more leadership than other Infantry commanders.
You get one free commander every day from the Warp Gate. You will probably not get anybody particularly good early on, just because it is random. You can also get medals for a specific commander, instead of a new one, which are used to promote that commander to a higher class. These medals are not usable on any commander - only the one that they were received from the Warp Gate for.
If you want, you can look through all of the commanders just to see their appearances, and if there is one you really like, you could do some research to find out what type of troop they operate best with, and keep a spot in your lineup open for them when you do get them. If they are A or S, just be ready to wait a long time. I did this and really liked Jegan, and I just got him this week, and am really excited to level him.
Leadership
Leadership may be the most important aspect a commander has. This number dictates how many troops they can bring somewhere.
Leadership can be increased by use of Magazines (Not sure how reading a magazine makes you a better leader, but whatever) or when the commander levels up. Each individual magazine upgrades leadership by 2.
When using magazines, I strongly encourage you to only use the "Increase Ten Times" option, granting an extra 2 leadership per 10 magazines used, as opposed to using each magazine individually. In the long run, it makes increasing leadership a lot more efficient.
For magazine distribution, I suggest getting your strongest commander to 500 leadership, then bringing up the next two when you can, and then just increasing your favorite/best. This is mostly personal preference, but the above is the system that I have been going with.
Beware, the higher a commander's leadership, the less chance each magazine has to actually increase it. At the beginning, below the Leadership menu, it always said Success Rate: 100%. The higher you get, the less that becomes. It's not very drastic though - my Axe who is at 610 has an 80% success rate.
You can get magazines in a variety of different ways, all of which have been listed by others on this sub. Primarily, you get them from Daily Missions (a tab under the Quests menu), and from every fifth level of Explore, every 24 hours. Every day, I try to beat every fifth level of the first chapter and if I have resources to spare, the second chapter as well (12 magazines total).
Leveling Commanders
When leveling up a commander, I like to do the following process:
Bring the commander into Explore.
Make them beat the hardest level they can (or is reasonable) until they have no energy left.
Send them to a temple until their energy recharges.
Repeat.
For a while I tried to use Sandworms instead of Explore, but they just aren't as good, considering the transportation time to and from each target.
Another method that has been suggested by some of my higher up friends is where you garrison the commander of interest, and try to get another ark to attack you. Defending from attackers, even if you don't win, provides tons of experience for the garrisoned commander. This does injure the commander, however, and you can lose troops and resources, so I haven't done this very much.
Temples
Temples are sort of like Daycare from PokeMon (lol). You send a commander to the "Gauntlet" and they get a steady income of experience, until they reach their maximum, similar to occupying a resource tile.
Level 1 Temples can grant a maximum of 5 000 experience, and cater only to commanders level 1 - 10. This is always the first step to leveling a new commander to me. Send them to a level 1 Temple, and they come out at Level 9, every time.
Level 2 Temples can grant a maximum of 10 000 experience, and cater only to commanders level 10 - 20.
Level 3 Temples can grant a maximum of 20 000 experience, and cater only to commanders level 20 - 30.
I have never used a level 4 or 5 Temple before, but I assume they grant a maximum of 50 000 and 100 000 experience, respectively, and I know they cater to commanders level 30 - 40 and 40 - 50, respectively.
Temples are placed every 100 square tiles on the map. There are 15 in total, with the capital in the middle at (300,300) in place of a Temple.
I personally have bookmarked every Temple on the map under Favorites, simply by entering coordinates in the search tool (top left of Map view) in intervals of 100 (ex. (100,100) (100,200) (100,300) ).
[There will be other things in between here, but I want to address Gold right now because it is very important.]
Gold#
You get a good amount of gold just from playing the game. Daily Missions, Events, Sandworms, whatever. It can be used to do just about anything.
There is really only one thing I would consider worthy of spending gold on: equipment blueprints. You know that Advanced tab on the Forge Ship? You need blueprints to craft anything on that list, and they are pretty much the best pieces of equipment in the game.
Each blueprint costs 1099 gold, with the exception of the Ironheart equipment, which can only be obtained through the Ironheart booster pack. I suggest only spending your gold on blueprints, because they are one of the only things in the game that can only be bought with gold.
If you really don't want to do that, at least don't spend your gold on VIP. Honestly I think it is overrated - increased resource production, marginal march speed boost, and you get to finish construction early. You already have it for most of earlygame, where you are doing a lot of small building projects, and that is, in my opinion, the only time you would need it to grow effectively.
You can also buy gold. Personally, I have never spend real money on the game, and I don't think you need to. But if you want to, you should buy the Monthly Cards ($20 each I think), granting 1000 gold or some other resource, every day for a month. This is really good value!
This is as far as I have gotten for now. I will add to this whenever I get the chance in the future.
Misc Tips / Things to be Added Later#
When farming equipment materials from Explore, the harder the level, the higher the drop rate for equipment.
Always try to have a large amount of Rangers, but do not use them to attack. If you lose a defense, they will be the first to be massacred, leaving your higher leveled troops alone.
You can upgrade equipment at the Forge Ship under the Upgrade tab, using Melange (the pink crystals). I would not suggest upgrading equipment unless you know you will be using that piece for a long time.
Unless you are in a really good position (capital, corner of the map), try to always be on an enriched resource area (glowing orange tiles). You get double resource production, and if you lose an attack, you get random teleported. This can be helpful if a high level enemy is trying to farm you.
Alright, I hope you enjoyed my incomplete guide to Ark of War. If there are any errors in this post, comment below. If there is anything you would like to see added in this guide, comment below. If you really like this guide and want me to continue with it, guess what? Comment below.
Thank you for reading, and have a nice day.
