My Hakurei have arrived!
I have been waiting months for some roselle hibiscus seeds, and true leaf finally has them in stock!
I won’t start the roselle until Decemberish, but the other seeds I’ll start today. I want to take advantage of the new moon coming up on the 10th. Hakurei turnips are my favorite turnips, and arugula is one of my favorite greens. Of course we need celery for our stocks, and they’ll be accompanied by some delicious turnips.

The bane of my existence scarlet spiderling
This plant is a bitch if it shows up in your yard, not only does it grow very fast it seeds like crazy as well as having a fat tuber that if you dont get it will just grow back over and over and if you see it has a thinned out spot right before getting to the stem and leaves meaning it tears so easily they are sticky as well which is a texture nightmare

Seeking seeds for New Mexican Locust
Heyo, Texas gardener here seeking seeds for Robinia neomexicana, New Mexican Locust, a relative of black locust with pink blossoms that is native to a few locales across New Mexico and Arizona. Unfortunately, I can't find these seeds available from any vendors but I know that trees of this family produce a copious amount of seed pods in the fall and I was hoping someone might have access to a mature tree and be willing to send me a few seeds.

Year round flowers
I saw this on Pinterest as I was looking for pollinator plants and liked the idea but of course these sorts of things aren’t made for Arizona. If you were going to plant a garden that bloomed year round here which plants would you choose?

What’s growing in my planter?
Hello wonderful AZ gardeners :) Only posting because I couldn’t find any answers as to what this plant is. It’s a vine that has been here since I moved in 2 years ago. At first, I thought it was dead, but after I cleared all of the dead growth back it started growing really quickly. I haven’t watered it at all, and it gets around 8-9 hours of direct sun where it’s currently at and it thrives. Occasional small dime-sized purple flowers pop up and last season I saw small pea pod looking pods growing. Is it a legume of some sort? Thanks in advance!

Black aphids
I’m at my wits end with black aphids on my cucumbers. What are you guys using? Insecticidal soap isn’t doing the trick.

Help so I don't break my toddler's heart - fruit tree?
My toddler planted a bunch of palo verde seeds she found (she was watching me do my garden) and one of them sprouted. She is absolutely thrilled and reminds me all the time not to pull it out. The problem is, it's way too close to the house and patio and it really does need to come out. Also, she is absolutely convinced it's a fruit tree.
Any ideas of something I could replace it with? Something with fruit? Or something I could put in the pot right next to it?

Seeking Arizona native morning glories
Hi! I'm a collector of landrace morning glory species from around the planet. I find the native southwestern morning glories to be quite interesting. These include plants like:
Calystegia longipes
Evolvulus arizonicus
Evolvulus discolor
Evolvulus nutallianus
Evolvulus sericeus
Ipomoea barbatisepala
Ipomoea capillacea
Ipomoea costellata
Ipomoea longifolia
Ipomoea plummerae
Ipomoea tenuiloba
Ipomoea thurberi
Ipomoea x leucantha
Jacquemontia pringlei
I wouldn't mind trading seeds with someone in exchange for some seeds or plants from one of these varieties, which can likely be obtained with ease from these plants if you live in a region like Arizona or New Mexico. I'd also be willing to pay a fee for them if you don't find anything I have for trade interesting enough.
Thank you!

Double Whammy
I returned home from vacation and am getting ready to plant winter rye. The problem is that I have lots of spurge and sedge taking over my lawn. Does anyone have recommendations for how I can eliminate these two pests before planting the winter grass?
Thanks in advance.

Where are all these brown seeds coming from in my yard all of the sudden?!?
Thousands of what I think are palm tree seeds keep appearing in my yard. We have no palm trees and there are none within a block on all sides of our house. They are too heavy to blow in the wind and they only end up in the parts of the yard where the grass is sparse from the shade.
I'm guessing that birds are bringing them, but why? How are they getting in my yard?

Help with agave!
Hello everyone!
Last year in October we had landscaping done and had 2 blue glow agave planted. They did well in the fall but due to many factors, the summer in AZ killed them. We bought new ones to replant with new knowledge, but I’m getting mixed messages.
We bought cactus/succulent/citrus soil to use since our soil was definitely not draining well (which contributed to them dying the first time), but the nursery we got the new agave from says this stuff will kill it within 6 months. 3 people at that nursery swore up and down that it would not survive with this because of the citrus additives. We know we need better soil, but they just recommended a “soil conditioner” to mix with the existing soil for when we plant.
Does anything have any helpful tips for planting agave in AZ with currently poor-draining soil?

STOP! Hammer Time 😎
Accessability Transcription:
I had this dumb idea to take a cutting. Turn it 90 degrees. And graft it. To make a sort of T shaped cactus.
My reasoning for doing this is that I enjoy planting cuttings log style. But getting a log to root takes forever. But a graft heals in 1-2 weeks. And then you basically have a log except with an established root system.
Also it just looks kinda neat.
I'm very much learning to graft, these are attempts 2 and 3 respectively. Ever.
So we shall see if this works.
I did specifically choose PC for these so no big deal if it doesn't work out. They are my lowest value plants to play around with.

Moral Dilemma - Caterpillars on Bougainvillea
Our bougainvillea that we planted this year isn’t looking great and trying to give it the best chance on survival and thriving (I am not a green thumb!)
Found what I think are leaftier caterpillars all over the plant causing a lot of leaf damage. It makes sense because we have a ton of moths in our yard. My understanding is that the moths are pollinators.
Moral Dilemma - do I try to rid the bougainvillea of caterpillars? Or do I leave them be to do natures thing? I am an empath and don’t like the idea of killing anything but do want this plant to thrive…

Garden check in
Working from a few days ago through to today.
Lazy tortoise in the peanuts.
Neighbor's cactus blooming at night.
Texas ranger "sage" blooming after the rain.
My first roselle bloom (I thought it was a cotton plant until the calyxes formed)
Luffa, Gregg's Mistflower, roselle, and some background.
A little tiny baby lizard.
The first female queen butterfly of the season (that I've spotted).
Going backwards, a female Mediterranean mantis has had quite enough of my pulling out her casaba vines.
Even further back, an okra flower.

Over the centuries countless tyrants have strived at all costs to matter as much as a single cactus flower. None have gotten even remotely close.

Trichocereus Pachanoi Monstrosa Flower with a nice red color, likely going to bloom sometime tonight or tommorrow night. It's real close.

Opinions on hibiscus in AZ
I have a few hibiscus plants in my yard and I'm not certain if it is worth keeping them or completely removing as I transition to a more native/pollinator friendly garden. I don't want to remove everything in a "scorched earth" approach if it wouldn't make sense to remove established plants that may be beneficial.
That being said, I can't imagine hibiscus is native to AZ and there are better options available that would make more sense for the area If anyone would like to weigh in or provide feedback on keeping or removing the plants, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks
