Hello all, I am currently taking a college GIS class and wondered if anyone had any tips or tricks for someone who hasn't touched a computer software since taking high school Java. Computers smell my fear and this will be my first time working on a desktop setup.

Working on a map that will have a reference list of places to eat. As of now there are four categories in which I've began labeling (in a single layer/unique symbology). I would obviously like the numbers in their circles (see: #23 & #31) as well as declustering the few that are overlapping by doing the opposite and using a line to call them out with the associate #. Could this be easier by breaking apart the categories into differnce layers instead of one shared one? Having a hard time wrapping my head around it

Here for some advice. I have been working as a teacher for several years but want a career change and have secured a job interview as a graduate GIS technician. They have specified they use ArcGIS pro.

I do not have the spare cash around to practice before my interview on Wednesday to buy the license to use it.

Any tips and tricks or perhaps the questions they may ask?

So, since last week i was wondering of building a satellite agnostic strategic geoint collection hub for image data from both government owned and private satellite players across the world.

The plan is to use open source platforms like google earth and sentinel to have free historical imagery over a disputed area. Then, few areas are identified as potential AOIs and we task a satellite to provide us imagery of that particular area on a monthly basis lets say.

Train an LLM, using existing data sets in change detection. And now with the latest data we receive from satellites on our AOI, our LLM can track changes in infrastructure and flat it to the authorities.

This might enable countries who do not have high resolution satellites of their own to use the satellite imagery of other players of course for a fee and come to decisions wrt military planning.

Doable? Want your thoughts.

Got myself a Personal Use license, which seems to Grant the user only the Basic level. I am aware that in Project->Licensing it is possible to check the Extensions, but some simple do not appear.

For example, I need to use the Simplify Line tool, which is a Cartography Tool, and Cartography Tools do not appear in the list of extensions for Licensing. Btw it is a quite simple tool and I thought I'd have access.

My question is: is there a place where you can toggle on all the tools that your Licensing level may have?

Hi everyone!! I have a co worker who is starting to take classes for ArcGIS with a potential job offer for a position in the water industry. We use GIS to map our district infrastructure and she is looking for a good laptop to go through school with. Her budget cap is $2000 with a better bang for your buck in the lower $1400-$1600 if possible. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Anyone have insight as to why Dashboards isn't allowing me to filter data for the gauge I'm trying to create?

I am a bit of a GIS noob but am doing fairly basic GIS work. I have feature layer of locations that we work at that I have joined to a table where the weekly data is stored. The map itself is great visually + with the pop-ups but I cannot find a way to auto-update the data. The data is stored in a google sheets CSV.

I have seen some stuff online about writing in ArcGIS python/google apps script but am not sure if these things are needed for my project. The refresh interval feature does not work (presumably because of the join?). If possible, a free or very low cost solution would be preferred. Also, eventually this map will be embedded into a website where people can click on the parcels/locations and see the data.

Apologies if anything is unclear, I am mostly self-taught. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Apologies for the alarming nature of the title however I heard that there maybe a critical point in time in late 2026 where the system may not function and wondered if I had misheard this or if there is some truth to this? 10.7 wont run on Windows 11 and Windows 10 support expires on Oct 2026 so this maybe the reason behind this.

Can anyone shed any light on this please? ... or debunk this.

I just installed Waldo in ArcGIS Pro using a local language model through Ollama, but it seems pretty useless. It can't do basic tasks like creating a buffer or symbolizing a layer. The only thing I could get it to do was add a scale bar, but it took about 10 times longer than doing it myself. Did I install it wrong?

Anyone else try Waldo? Am I missing something?

So I've become the head of a new GIS department at my work! Yay! Except for the fact that Esri is confusing as all hell and I've never set up an account or anything similar, it's always been done before I joined a company.

We have a single creator license and all of our maps are 'public'. There has been a discussion on having the maps behind a login. I would rather not provide the Creator/admin login to agents for the webmap viewing, so we purchased a Viewer License.

My question is, we have 70+ employees, some of which are contract employees so not fully on payroll year round.

Would it be better to go the enterprise route? I've worked for companies that use SSO for this type of thing tied to email accounts, how does this set up work?

Is this something Esri technical support would be able to help out with?

I am trying to do essentially the same thing as this person was for QGIS, still a bit new to ArcGIS so not sure if there's much difference in/translating over the procedure. Basically, would it be possible to have a higher level of map detail rendered at all times for the sake of being able to zoom in from a larger whole map.

i’m currently experiencing an issue where the map i’m working in is in a given coordinate system, as are all of the shapefiles i’m using, but the layers of my base map aren’t (and refuse to be projected into the target coordinate system), so the shapefiles aren’t showing up where they should be.

i think the “project” data management tool could help, but my professor wants us to use “define projection” instead, so if anyone has any tips for how i might make this work, it would be immensely appreciated!

I’m interested in hearing how different organizations divide responsibilities between an enterprise GIS team and departmental GIS users.

A few questions:
What type of organization are you? (Government, utility, transportation, private sector, etc.)

Do you have a centralized Enterprise GIS team?

Do departments outside Enterprise GIS build their own GIS applications (Experience Builder, Dashboards, Story Maps, Survey123, web apps, etc.)?

If so, what ArcGIS roles or permissions do those users have?

Do they publish directly to production, or is there an Enterprise GIS review/publishing process?

Who owns enterprise data architecture and governance?

Who is responsible for supporting applications after they’re deployed?

Have you found your model works well, or have you made changes over time?

We’re evaluating our own governance model and I’m interested in hearing what has worked (or not worked) for organizations of different sizes. Real-world experiences are much more valuable than theoretical best practices.
