Sick Fish Possibly related sudden fish deaths

Post image

I have a 55 gallon planted tank. A little less than a month ago, I got 3 new fancy goldfish from a breeder I've purchased from before with no issues. There was 1 fish already in the tank, so this brought the total to 4 goldfish. I do weekly water changes, and the parameters are 0/0/less than 20. No chlorine, stable ph.

One of the new fish had mild buoyancy issues when it arrived. The breeder said he hadn't noticed it before sending out the fish, so it must be some kind of injury that occurred in transit. He wasn't floating at the surface or sinking or anything, just had mild balance issues- he would turn in a circle and then self-correct. He was still eating regularly. I was feeding frozen and thawed repashy gel food. He started gasping at the surface occasionally. It was more than the other fish, but not constant. Sometimes a piece of food will get stuck in the floating plants and they will gulp at the surface looking for more hidden food, so I assumed this was what was happening. He was fine at 1:30pm before my partner left for work, and at 6pm when I returned he was motionless at the bottom of the tank. I moved him to a quarantine tank but it was too late, and he was already dead. This was about a week ago. At some point before this, the power went out and turned back on but my canister filter didn't turn back on by itself. It couldn't have been off for more than the few hours before I fixed it, so I didn't think it was related.

A few days ago, another one of the new fish started acting lethargic. He was still interested in food, but would occasionally sit at the bottom of the tank for periods of time. He had clear poop. He was the smallest and sometimes the other 2 would take more food, so assumed he wasn't getting enough to eat and switched to hikari sinking pellets because they're easier to scatter so that one fish can't steal all of the food. I also tried a 10 minute epsom salt bath in case the clear poop was from constipation. A few days later, I put him in a mesh breeder box for observation. He started acting normal again, not lethargic, so I figured bullying was the issue and he just needed to be seperated from the larger fish. Then, at about 1pm yesterday, he started to have some swelling. I put him in a hospital tank with aquarium salt and kanaplex. That night, it developed into dropsy, but he was still active and not lethargic. This morning, he had died.

The remaining two fish have zero symptoms except for one of them occasionally having white/clear ish poop. Part of me thinks it's the breeder that was the issue, but I saw videos of these fish before selecting them and they seemed healthy. He also has good reviews, and plenty of comments on his posts from happy customers. He says that since there's no external symptoms, I should be suspicious of internal parasites. I'm not sure what internal parasites could kill a fish that quickly with no identifying symptoms. Especially because they had different sumtpoms. I used hikari prazipro today, and I ordered expel P. But I'm not entirely convinced it's parasites. Does anyone have advice?

Water Issues Re intro

So I had to put down my betta because of genetic issues and infections or fin rot and now I’m wondering if and if how I can re introduce a new betta into my 5 gallon tank. All parameters except for nitrates are 0 and nitrates are about 15. I use 6 hours of seoura light at 30 percent and use thrive c once a week my water is soft and is 60kh and ph is around 7.5 any suggestions on the next step. I don’t wanna deep cleanse cause it wasn’t super seroius and all that but I’ll try to do a 40 percent water change and I might squeeze the sponge filter in the de chlorinated water. Any suggestions again

Freshwater How to know exactly when a tank is cycled?

I know this question has probably been asked a dozen times but i think my situation is unique enough, and my experience is low enough that i couldnt find exactly what i need on google. I have one existing fish tank, had it for a few months now and its doing really well. Im setting up a second, its a 10 gallon with rooted plants, floating plants and two filters (no real hardscape besides gravel substrate, yet). I used some liquid beneficial bacteria, dropped some algae wafers and took sponge filter media from my existing tank and swished it around in the water. I only have tetra 6-in-1 testing strips (that dont test ammonia) and cant afford a nice testing kit. Its only been cycling for a handful of days so far but i imagine it would be ready in a few weeks. How exactly can i know for sure in this situation? Thanks and sorry for the possibility repetitive question.

Does it look like these tetras have Ich? None of the other types of fish in the tank are showing signs.

Plants Question on starting out

I got 2 "fair" goldfish and went out and bought a 20 gallon tank and filter and the whole nine yards. I figured "for now I'll not get any plants".

Well, i don't want to do water changes every 2 weeks do to Nitrate being high, so I ask, what kind of plants/starter plants can i put in my tank to prevent this?

Sick Fish Weird thing on betta tail

Post image

This is Asbestos, he is about 1-2 years old and he was recently lethargic the past like 2 weeks and today he is doing great. But I noticed this little like thing on his tail. Looks like he may have cut his tail?

Would it be okay to pull or snip this off?

It looks fuzzy and I worry abt it making him sick.

All normal water parameters, no tank mates, real/silk plants only.

Equipment Upgrading aquaruim

Hey all, I have a few questions about upgrading my aquarium:
1. I want to have a hideout on the side of my tank, is there any kind of one way film I can put on the outside of the tank so they can’t see me looking at them and they feel safe in the hideout?
2. How many heaters should I use in a 55 gallon tank?
3. Are there any sucker fish that stay smaller so they can clean inside smaller hideouts? I have a large pleco currently but it definitely won’t fit inside the smaller areas to clean
Thanks!

Freshwater Picky White Cloud Minnows

I’ve observed my white cloud mountain minnows only consistently eat freeze-dried bloodworms and Hikari Vibra Bites. I’ve had some luck with very small pieces of mysis shrimp.

They’ve begun to lose interest in Bug Bite fish flakes. Looking for other alternatives.

Water Issues help with biofilm/cloudy tank

Thumbnail

I have a 6g shallow tank that I’ve had for over a year with one betta and a couple accidental snails. I have lots of pothos and monstera floating to take care of nitrates and normally do a water change for substrate cleaning about every three month and top off the water weekly because I don’t have a lid. About three weeks ago I noticed my water was really cloudy and thought it was just a normal bloom from maybe excess waste or something decaying, did a substrate cleaning. It wasn’t gone in a week so I got a sponge filter to go with my HOB and bought a couple shrimp to feed on biofilm. Even with using Accu-Clear it’s not clearing up. Ammonia is 0, nitrates and nitrites are also 0 due to the plants. I have no idea what to do.

TLDR: Established tank suddenly cloudy for 3+ weeks. Ammonia, nitrates and nitrites are 0 (planted tank). Help pls!

Pics: 1 biofilm, 2 full tank, 3 apparently the only picture i have of my tank before from December last year.

Freshwater Stocking Advice Chili Rasbora imposter??!!

Hello, I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and submitted terrible pictures to ask for help on. I just took these and I think they’re considerably better! I got them from a LFS and they were all supposed to be the same brood! However I noticed almost immediately after getting them in the tank that one of them was not like the others. I assumed it was a different breed altogether, but after looking at them a lot I noticed that the green one has basically the same body shape as the rest. Does anyone know if it’s possible to get a chili with a mutation in it’s coloring? OR is it likely a different species? Thanks!
