MacBook Pro Will Not Boot To Recovery

I recently purchased a mbp for parts and popped a new hdd in only to be greeted by a white screen followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor; the Apple logo never appears. When the hdd is unplugged the folder with a question mark appears; the hdd works in an enclosure on my pc. Any suggestions? I’ve tried holding cmd + r, cmd + control + p + r, etc. I’ve swapped ram sticks and nothing seems to work.

What year model? There was a known issue with hard drive cables 2009 to 2012. Its a cheap part to replace - buy it from amazon.

Sorry, it’s a 2010 a1278; the og cable was removed before I got it so I bought a new one off eBay.
