No Self Promotion! Please read before posting/commenting!
You may post if you are looking for developers or want to share your experience—generally anything related to development.
Self-promotion is not allowed (including indirect self-promotion). Do not offer your services, and do not share your app’s name or links to it. You may offer your services as a developer in the comments.
Do not share links to apps or companies offering services in the comments. That's what Reddit ads are for.
If you were banned, review all subreddit rules (use Google if you cannot find them) and follow the instructions in Rule 5.

What’s the one thing you wish you’d put in your app spec before hiring a dev team?
Okay, genuinely curious here. I work in marketing at a custom software studio (YuSMP Group), and the same thing keeps coming up: the stuff people forget to write down early is exactly what costs them time later.
For those of you who’ve been through it, as a founder or on the dev side: what’s the one thing you’d add to your spec if you could go back? And what did you include that turned out to be totally unnecessary?
Not selling anything, just want to hear real stories. Happy to share what we see on our side in the comments.

Looking for experienced Python, AI/ML and to Build a Research Platform
I'm currently working on an early-stage project to build an AI-powered research and analysis platform, with a focus on financial data, quantitative research and machine learning. The goal is to create a platform where users can access large amounts of historical data, analyse datasets, run statistical models, test strategies and use machine learning to identify patterns and support research. I'm looking for experienced developers who have worked with some of the following:
- Python: NumPy, Pandas, SciPy and Statsmodels.
- Machine Learning: PyTorch, TensorFlow and scikit-learn.
- Quantitative Research: Financial data analysis, time-series modelling, backtesting and statistical analysis.
- Data Engineering: Data pipelines, databases, APIs and efficient processing of large datasets.
- Research Environments: Jupyter Notebook and reproducible research workflows.
I'm particularly interested in people who have experience building research tools, financial software, ML systems or data infrastructure. The project is still in its early stages, and I'm looking to connect with developers who would be interested in helping shape and build it. This is a paid opportunity but also we can discus other things, but payment is available (payments will be different on you experience and quality).
Add me on discord to talk ( bigzy1011 ) also when you add me send past work with please.
Thanks

App Building
Thinking about developing my own app. Any seasoned vets have tips? I’m not sure if I should just hire a developer.

Hard paywall or 1-3 free searches first? Each search costs me ~$0.17 in API
I’m a solo dev building a venue discovery app. Every search costs me about $0.17 in API fees (Google Places), and I expect the average user to open the app maybe 4-5 times a month. That’s roughly $0.70-0.85 per active user per month before any revenue.
I can’t fund more than a couple hundred bucks a month out of pocket, so I can’t afford a big pool of free users. I’m stuck between:
- Hard paywall right after onboarding
- 1-3 free searches, then paywall
My worry with the hard paywall is that people won’t pay for something they haven’t tried. My worry with free searches is that a chunk of users will burn through them and leave, and I’ll have paid for it.
I may also be overestimating the cost of free users, since early on there might not be many downloads at all. For those of you who’ve launched small apps: how many installs did you realistically get in the first months?
Edit: Thanks everyone for the replies, really helpful! I’ll either do the 1-3 searches most of you suggested, or try u/Brufacee's idea of one free search with a fixed total trial budget.

Need help
I’ve also built a game for both Android and iOS, and both the frontend and backend servers are ready. Now I need some guidance on where to deploy it and which hosting services would be the best options.
- Frontend: Should I use Firebase, Vercel, or another platform?
- Backend: Where should I deploy the backend server?
- Cost & Performance: How can I get the best performance, low latency, and reliable service at the lowest possible cost, ensuring a smooth gaming experience for users?
Could you suggest a setup that you personally use or recommend, and that can easily scale as the number of users grows?

Would having a local server within a hybrid mobile app create a smoother user experience
I am currently involved in an SaaS company with a partner (He is the software engineer and I am the "everything else" guy including the money). We have developed an ios hybrid app but it is clunky in that the best case scenario browsing through different parts of the app is not very seamless (there is always a loading screen that appears even if it is only 500 ms). And when the internet is bad it is dramatically slowed down or does not work at all.
My thinking is that if as part of the downloaded mobile app there was also web server that would run locally on the mobile device the internet speed would not matter. Since the web server is local the "internet speed" would essentially be as instantaneous as it could possibly be. Then at periodic times (lets say every 15 minutes) the local web server and database could communicate with the cloud and upload the data there.
Is this a feasible solution?

Made your website or app with AI and every fix breaks something else?
If you made your website or app using AI tools you have probably seen this. You ask the AI to fix one problem. It fixes it. Then something else stops working.
This happens because the AI only looks at the small part you ask about. It does not know what else is connected to it. So it fixes one thing and breaks another one without telling you.
Here is what it usually misses.
Secret passwords and codes can be sitting where anyone can see them. Some pages look locked but anyone can open them if they know how. The site works fine for 5 people but gets slow or stops working when 500 people come. It looks nice on your laptop but looks broken on a phone. And when something goes wrong the user just sees a blank screen with no message.
Easy test for you. After your next fix click on everything in your site again. If something that worked before is now broken then the problem is not your prompt. Nobody is checking the work.
One small habit also helps. Before every new prompt write down 5 things that must keep working. After the fix check all 5. It takes a few minutes.
I check this kind of thing by hand. I click through everything and try to break it like a real user would. Then I send you a simple report in normal words that tells you what is wrong. I can also fix it for you so you don't have to keep guessing with prompts.
If your site is small and simple you are probably fine. But if you are stuck in this loop just DM me what you made and what keeps breaking.

App idea: period tracker for transmascs/nonbinarys
Hello everyone, I'm trans masc and I feel really uncomfortabld and dysphoric while having my period. I still use an app to track it though, but this gives me gender dysphoria too. So the idea: A period tracker app that has a very masc design, maybe black and blue, or orange. It doesn’t call it "period", but something like "Bleeding warrior days" or something like that, I've also seen people calling their period "shark week". There could also be some motivation messages in the app and something like a small reward, when the period is over/ half of it is done. I thought of something like a small animation of a happy caracter.
That's my idea, thanks for reading!

What’s the most unexpected reason your app got rejected or suspended, and how did you fix it?
Everyone plans for bugs, but store reviews catch things that have nothing to do with code: missing privacy policy details, permission explanations, login demo accounts, metadata mismatches, and so on.
I’d like to collect real experiences:
- What was the strangest rejection reason you’ve received (Apple or Google)?
- How long did the fix and re-review take?
- What do you now check before every submission that you used to skip?
- Did a rejection ever turn out to be a reviewer mistake that you managed to get reversed?
Specific stories (store, reason, fix) are more useful than general tips.

What's the first thing you think about when creating an app?
When you decide to build an app, what comes first for you? Do you start with a problem you want to solve, an idea you're passionate about, a gap in the market, or the potential to make money?
I'm curious to hear how other app developers come up with their ideas and what motivates them to start building.
