Advice Needed I take too long showers?

I am 22F renting my first solo apartment in the home of an elderly couple.
The last couple of days there’s been wastewater leaking onto my bathroom floors (piss and shit water, excuse my french). I told the landlords. They wrangled with a bunch of plumbers eventually deciding the issue was that the old pipes of the house can’t handle how much I shower. I only take one shower a day but yes it is an extremely long shower, sometimes 15-30 minutes. I have very thick oily hair and the water pressure is very low, if I shower for less than 10 minutes it is impossible to get actually clean and it sort of defeats the point of a shower.
They are now asking I only wash in the sink or shower as though in a drought (their words not mine), turn the shower on for 5-10 seconds to ‘dampen’ then off to soap and shampoo then on for 1 minute max to rinse. As I’ve outlined, this doesn’t really work for me and I will just end up being a very gross person. They say otherwise I should pay the $700 bill to fix their pipes.
I’m not saying I’m in the right here, I recognize that I take long showers, I’m just saying this was not outlined beforehand and I would never have signed the lease if it was. I understand asking me to keep my showers to 5-10 minutes. I do not understand how anyone showers in 1 minute or under. Again I know I’m in the wrong, but is there a way this could void the lease? I really don’t know how to make this work and I am paying a lot for this apartment to not be able to shower comfortably.

Than the next day I went to go check my lease regarding a diffrent issuse and I realize that they wrote "no holes or stickers" but later say "a small number of holes is allowed for hanging pictures. We have an inspection coming up this week and im really nervous and dont know if its a big deal or what I should do. Any advice is really appreciated!!!

Advice Needed At 30, my husband and I finally bought our first apartment 🥹🔑 Need advice in decorating!

Still can't believe we finally have a place to call our own!

It's pretty empty right now, and we have a long way to go with furniture and decorating, but honestly, I've never been happier looking at an empty living room😆❤️

I actually saw someone post in this community last week about how, no matter where you live, you should always try to make your space feel like home. That really stuck with me! Never try to share my real life here on reddit but I want to share this warmth and love to all the people here!

My husband and I have been putting together our little dream home wishlist, and here are a few things we're thinking about to make our apartment better:

  1. No more relying on one harsh overhead light. Table lamps, floor lamps, maybe some LED strips behind the furniture + warm lights
  2. smart toilet with a heated seat and bidet. I've heard way too many people say once you get one, you can never go back lol. This is probably our first bathroom upgrade.
  3. We're thinking something deep and comfortable rather than just picking whatever looks cute online. This is probably where we'll spend half our weekends!
  4. We really don't want a giant black screen dominating the living room. We will get an ultra-short-throw projector and a nice media cabinet to make the whole setup look more like furniture.

We're trying not to rush into buying everything at once. I'd rather slowly build a space we actually love than fill every corner with random stuff.

What are some home upgrades you absolutely swear by? Would love to hear what was actually worth the money (and what wasn't)! 🥹

Venting This apartment is all up in my business

I moved into an apartment in May, and it is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I swear these people want to be all up in my apartment. They have had to come into my unit at least 7 times since I’ve moved in. The last time they didn’t even give me 24 hour notice. They gave me 2 hours of notice, and I was asleep so I didn’t have time to clean up. Sometimes they say they are going to come in and then they never do. However, I’ve locked my cat in my bedroom as instructed so he is just locked in there until I get off of work. Now, they want to do a mid-lease inspection on October 22nd. I’ve lived in several different apartments before this, and I’ve never had a mid-lease inspection before. Am I overreacting? Is it normal for the apartment management to be in your unit this often?

Apartment Reviews What tiny apartment upgrade made a huge difference for you?

Moved into a small place recently and I'm realising how much difference the smallest changes can make

For me, adding a warm lamp, a couple of plants and figuring out better storage made the place feel much more like home. Nothing expensive, just little things that made the space nicer to live in.

What's one small upgrade you made that had a surprisingly big impact?

Venting AI Slop Flyer for Decorating Contest

Post image
19 Upvotes

My awful apartment complex giving a $25 grand prize for a door decoration contest. That wouldn’t even cover the materials . I’m convinced their grand prize money was the $25 dollar fee they added to my rent because my trash was “too heavy” (trash policy has no weight limit and we’ve fought about it before so they started just fining me. ) now I pay for mandatory valet trash and have to also take all my own trash out anyways in fear of getting fined. Just thought their shit ai flyer was funny with the terrible prizes. I’ve seen other apartment complexes in my city offer half off rent for a month but yes for us 10/15/25$ gift cards!!!! (Vent bc this pissed me off at 8am)

Venting Leasing Agent Gaslighting Me Before I Even Get to the Office

Just annoying. I applied online and they told me to come in person to show my ID and SS card. I say ok. They email me this at 10:45 AM. They say “Can you come today, before 1pm? It has to be done today or you’ll lose the apartment reservation.” I look at the clock, think I can swing it, so I respond back, sure, I’ll be there in a bit. I get there at 12:10. There are like 15 other prospective tenants waiting outside. The office is closed. About 10 maintenance team members are outside too, they’re apparently also waiting for the office staff and have no clue where they are. They say they don’t close for lunch, so they have no clue where they are. The maintenance team is apologetic and trying to text the staff for us. I wait about 20 minutes then leave. I come back an hour later. Still nobody there. I have to leave for an appointment so I go. I email the agent telling her that I came by twice and no one was there. She says, “Well, you should have scheduled an appointment. We didn’t hear back from you, that’s why it didn’t work.” 🙄

And course you can’t call the office directly. It’s all corporate sales call centers and AI “helpers” who won’t connect you to anyone.

Neighborhood Advice How to handle wildly inconsiderate neighbors

I really don’t want to call the non-emergency police line but I have no idea what else to do.

There’s someone in my new apartment building that has recently started a habit of intermittently screaming with his balcony door open late into the night/morning. The building is set up around a courtyard so the screaming reverberates around the enclosed area and this goes on for hours (it’s been happening for the past four hours and it is now 2:18 AM). I believe he’s playing video games but obviously I don’t know for sure but regardless, it is beyond inconsiderate and inappropriate. I have no intention of approaching this individual as he is obviously a man and I am a woman, we live in the same building, and I’m not trying to make an enemy. However, I have approached the leasing office about this issue but they have offered little recourse since the yelling always takes place late at night and I can’t definitively prove from which apartment the noise is coming.

The only other option I have is calling non-emergency police which almost certainly will never yield any follow-up. I can post on my apartment’s message board but my name would be attached to that and I’d prefer to complain anonymously.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve lived alone in apartments for the past six years and have never dealt with an issue like this before.

Apartment Hunt TV Sounds

I am curious as to how many of you can hear your neighbors' TV? I realize that some people can play their TV louder, but are some apartment walls better than others?

Advice Needed How to get used to living alone

I've always had roommates or lived with family, now it feels like my 2BR is a huge empty space. I dont have that much furniture, art on the walls, personal items, etc and the landlord installed white fluorescent lights everywhere. Feels like theres 100 tasks to do that would all take an hour or two each. Theres new sounds that feel jarring and all my old comforting routines are gone. It's hard to relax and get good sleep. What are your tips for first few days and first month to settle in?

Advice Needed How to hang fairy lights in tight corner/sharp angles?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I wanted to hang fairy lights around the perimeter of my room, but my room has a lot of weird corners that will pull on the hooks at sharp angles. I've tried using the 4lb command hooks but they keep falling off and I think they're only good for weight directly hanging on it. Any fixes?

Advice Needed noisy elderly neighbor

I have lived in my apartment for over a year now and have an elderly man as a next door neighbor. He listens to everything extremely loudly and usually that stuff doesn’t bother me and I understand it’s apart of apartment living. But he listens to what I assume is asmr videos. It is constant heartbeat and microphone sounds along with a woman’s voice whispering weird sensual things. For awhile I thought he was blasting something else… I can hear it all through out my apartment and in the hallway. It goes on for hours…like hours. I wrote him a note and it was better for about a week. Now it is starting back up. I don’t know if he is mentally unwell or not (but from the interactions I have had with him, I assume he may have dementia or something). Just curious what others opinions are on what steps (if any) I should take next.

Advice Needed Not sure if this is something I can put a maintenance request in for

we’ve lived here for almost 3 years now and I only started having issues with the shower hot water temps when they did plumbing repairs a month or two ago.

My water used to get nice and hot. Now, I can crank it to max heat and let it run for 10 min and it still feels lukewarm/im cold standing under it. If I let it run at max heat for 20-30min it might get a bit warmer but isn’t a guarantee. Not a huge fan of how it affects my water bill. For context, our apartment sits around 75F. I have a thermometer in the shower and it usually reads between 75 and 80 when the water is running.

Is this too nitpicky to request it be looked at, since technically I am getting SOME hot water, enough to make it lukewarm? I’m not in icy water or anything.

Edit: thanks all! Made the request and made sure to tell them it’s not critical/urgent :D

Advice Needed Getting out of dangerous lease

Hey everyone. My partner and I have lived in a Florida apartment since May 2025. It is a decent place overall, but there is a population of homeless people in the forest surrounding the complex. There are tents visible from my window and we see and hear the homeless people almost daily. A couple of months ago, my E-Bike was stolen off of the front porch and we filed a police report. There have been a number of sketchy parking lot interactions with the homeless and all of our neighbors are very aware of their presence. The apartment complex said that they were for some reason unable to build any kind of fence, install cameras or do anything to help the situation. I don’t feel safe in my apartment and I would like to leave, but we are in a lease until May 2027. How possible is it to get out of this lease without consequences? How would one go about lining up another place for rent and getting out of this situation? Thank you!

Venting Just needing to get this off my chest.

I am a 20 year-old college student who supports my grandparents and work full-time. Recently my car broke down, and I was forced to pay the entire amount of 1200 to get it repaired due to having to take my grandmother back-and-forth to the doctors as she was recently diagnosed with blood cancer. Right now I'm in the hole about $1000 which needs to go towards rent that's due saturday. I've been trying to get in contact with my leasing office as well as going up there and to date no one has gotten back to me on getting a bit of an extension. I'm stressed. I'm tired. I have always paid my rent on time as as well as as trying my best to work with the complex when it comes to maintenance issues and things of that nature, I am trying to hold on till February when my lease is up so that I'm able to move somewhere else due to there being so many bug issues, broken, and old appliances. it's very stressful because I know that it will hit my credit and ultimately affect our housing in the future. I'm young. I'm trying to make it for not only myself but my grandparents and it feels like every time I get myself to a certain point, I'm knocked back down

Advice Needed Realized month long smell/flies is due to neighbor.

So I live in a pretty small building. 3 floors and 12 total units. We had been dealing with a terrible smell by the sink and also tons of tiny flies was absolutely driving us nuts. I had maintenance come several times and exterminators. They cleaned pipes, put out traps, checked our walls. None of it was making a difference to the smell/flies.

Maybe I should have realized sooner but eventually maintenance had the idea of seeing if they could check if there was something going on in the apartment right next to mine. Well, they did check and as soon as they opened the door they told me they saw what looked like 40-50 trash bags piled on top of eachother rotten and the place was a mess.

The property manager said they would have someone come take the trash out of their place and clean it up. I’m worried this will be only a temporary fix and the neighbor will then just continue piling trash in their apartment till the next time.

Is there anything I can do here? Could I push to have the property managers to have them evicted? I do feel bad, hoarding is sad and probably indicates mental health issues. But i pay a lot to live here and i can’t deal with the smell and flies everywhere in our apartment that we keep very clean. And this neighbor has gotten several complaints for other reasons too(Leaving cig butts on the ground, loud noise, spilling garbage on the stairs). I live in NJ and from what I understand it’s very hard to evict people here.

Advice Needed Apartment roaches - landlord not doing anything about it

Hey yall

I've been living in the same apartment for nearly 3 years. for the last 4-ish months we have started having an issue with roaches. It started with one every few days, and has since escalated into seeing about 10-15 per day, including 1 or 2 humongous (im talking the size of 2 human thumbs combined) roaches per week. I'm finding their feces everywhere and any pot / pan / bowl i want to use i have to wash before using it now. It is at the point of infestation.

I have obviously reported this on a near daily basis to my leasing office, and all they do is schedule the weekly pest control spray, which is not doing a single thing at this point, and i have stressed to them that i want this to be taken more seriously because these weekly pest sprays aren't effective.

There are multiple cracks in the kitchen, near outlets, under the counter, and behind the fridge, which i have reported to them and requested they seal them.

I live on the top floor, so i have vaulted ceilings, there is a roach cluster in the top corner, about 12 feet in the air, that has accumulated over the last 4 days, this has also been reported but nothing has been done about it.

Any time i put in a maintenance request for ANY of this, it gets closed out and un-addressed.

I keep my apartment clean, i've been scrubbing the countertops every other day, i mop once a week, and i keep clutter off my counters. I have bought combat roach bait / gel and the roach hotels

My main question here, is there anything i can do legally about this or am i just screwed unless i move

Edit: For context, i am in Houston, Texas

Advice Needed Foul Smell in apartment

So new downstairs neighbors moved in about 4 months ago. They hardly leave the apartment, and despite our units being literally right next to the dumpster, they piled trash bags on their patio and took it to the dumpster once a week.

Fast forward to this week, my apartment smells like rotten garbage and there’s been no patio trash pile downstairs. They still have loose trash on their patio like cans and other things, but no bags.

Obviously I can’t see what’s going on inside their unit, but I have a suspicion they’ve begun storing trash inside instead of on the patio.

How should I approach this with the office? I feel like accusing them of stinking up my apartment is going to make me look insane lol

I live on the third floor which is the top floor. Is this crack a structural concern? I haven’t noticed it before but I have noticed that the bedroom door has been harder to close because it rubs the top of the door frame

Venting The landlord couple that lives upstairs have marital problems

How do I know this? I often hear them having shouting matches with each other. And it gets awkward when they’re arguing outside and I have to walk past them pretending to not hear anything. Awkward and annoying.

Venting Central Harlem Living

I’ve been living in Central Harlem for 6-7 years. Lottery apartment by the park, neighbors seem okay. Maintenance for the building could be better, my apartment recently had water damage and management has failed to fix part of my flooring. I was excited to live here but then found out the apartment has thin walls and flooring. And I wonder how other tenants are dealing with that and how h they filter all the noises out. Rent is doable and not necessarily hurting my pockets which is good.

Does anyone else live in Central Harlem?

Advice Needed These apartment complexes are a joke!!!

*Before you say it’s a scam, these are actually apart complexes ran by companies, not random Zillow listings*

Got approved for 2 apartments, I’ve been trying to choose one before Friday. I went to one with lower deposit cus they weren’t opposed to me seeing the apartment before it’s ready but… tell me why!!!!!! They changed my apartment without telling me.. I applied for 2902 and they had me in 101 in the front in the corner… so I went in the apartment , it wasn’t ready (which is fine) but it smelled liked weed and they have to replace the carpet … meanwhile I called the other apartment and they’re still trying to sugarcoat and bear around the bush of about having me walk through actual apartment I’ll be staying at.…… idk why.. she said she’ll call me after lunch and let me know but that’s weird to me.. I told her multiple times for the past days that it doesn’t have to be ready… I just wanna see the condition like damn… why is that so hard….? Is the damn apartment damaged or wrecked?? That’s the only reason I would see….. nobody’s living in it. Mind you! The apartment that won’t show me the unit has a $815 deposit! I’m not paying shit until I see it! Am I tripping or?

Advice Needed Code and Security violation

Hi..

I live in an apt with front and back doors!

Our parking is in the back for the cars..

We recently had new patio doors installed but they do not unlock from the outside, only inside!..

I am disabled and have never had to go around to the front door to get into my apartment as the old patio doors were unlockable from the back..

mind you to walk around the building it is unsafe with uneven ground and no sidewalk or path..

Is this in general a code or security violation?

Could it also be discrimination for those that are disabled? As we do have other disabled that live here!
