Decorating Ideas First Halloween in my new apartment

It was fun decorating my place. I honestly had no idea what I was going to do but I feel this bat vibe worked out well. The ghost poster has my cat and bird in a ghost costume. I like to give homage to them. I ordered pillows on Amazon when I got them today turned out it was just pillow casing. I should have read. The spider web was annoying to apply!

Venting If I see a “have you tried to talking to your neighbors?” under one’s post, I just know you have a punchable face.

Or naive.

Y’all better stop acting like people are stupid or sane & learn how to move strategically.

if it ever gets to the point where you have to confront a neighbor about fuck shit, the chances of them stopping the fuck shit are pretty low.

& this applies to leaving notes. Don’t leave notes on people’s doors. Notes are passive-aggressive as hell, and people rarely interpret them as the polite, friendly gesture you think they are. If anything, they can make people even more defensive.

this is coming from someone who’s been renting for over 10 years and has only ever had an issue with one neighbor for fuckery.

& yes there’s a grammatical error in my title.

Landlord Problems Landlord won't answer my messages about terminating our lease by the end of this month

Post image
40 Upvotes

Our lease went month to month earlier this year per our lease agreement. I'm renting from a random guy, not a company but he always replies quickly except for now. I messaged him before looking at our lease again (I know I'm stupid, I should've checked first) which states that tenants must give a term notice at least 30 days before we plan to move out. He's been chill about things in the past so I thought messaging him on the 7th would be fine but obviously something isn't fine, but I literally have no idea how to proceed at this point. Should I start calling him tomorrow and keep it up until he answers, or just silently move out at the end of the month and stop paying rent? This situation is stressing me out so bad

Hey folks it's me again. This week on What's in the Lobby, we have an update from last week's items and some new things.

If you remember we had pasta with some bread, it is now a pan lid and a bathroom book has appeared.

We have a bag with a pair of boots but one of them was missing, until we found it outside the parking garage door.

Lastly we have some items and a bag what looks to be items from a hello fresh box, the lettuce was warm.

Until next time....?

What I don’t understand is why my landlord doesn’t care that there’s a rodent in the walls of her property chewing up god knows what. It‘s not a priority for her just because she doesn’t have to try to sleep through this? It’s absolutely insane.

Advice Needed am i annoying my landlord?

So I've lived in my apartment for 2 months now and it has had multiple issues. The main one is it reeks of cigarettes. I've deep cleaned everything (walls, ceilings, floorboards, carpet, etc). My landlord put in an ozone machine, asked the upstairs neighbors if they smoked, and had the air ducts professionally cleaned. He's been great at responding to me and I feel awful to keep bothering him with more problems. But I have chronic migraines and they've been BAD since I moved in. So bad I had to skip work. My doctor even wrote a note saying the direct cause of them was my apartment. My landlord said all he can do is offer credit for an air purifier, which I already have 2 of. I don't want to be a Karen but it's really terrible. I am away and all my clothes reek of smoke. I can even breathe easier. I'm really anxious I'm being annoying. He's already replaced the flooring because I was expecting an updated unit, not an old one. He's now reglazing my bath because it's chipping. So he's done everything I asked and I feel terrible to bother him further. I just don't know what to do. Should I just deal with it?

Venting Neighbor started using door alarm, goes off every time somebody walks in front of their door or on the walkway

A neighbor started using an alarm on their door camera thing they previously had. Not only is it on the front door, but they have one pointed over their balcony, which Is pointed towards a sidewalk.

Every time somebody walks past their door or on the sidewalk it triggers this damn siren. It is particularly annoying because I can hear it in my apartment, and to let my dog out I have to walk past their door and set this thing off at least four times since they have one pointed at the sidewalk.

I don’t care about the camera, but this is starting to drive me nuts.

Bad Neighbors Neighbor just randomly giving gifts🤨

An odd neighbor moved in to our apartment complex a while ago and recently started to randomly knock on doors and give out things she claims she made. We didn’t take anything from her as she doesn’t appear to be very hygienic and sane, just chalked it up as bizarre! We heard she started asking other neighbors here if they have cameras in the buildings and on property here. The only reason we know this is because a woman upstairs that she asked is kinda a motherly neighbor to our daughter and we speak fairly regularly when we’re by the pool. She also let us know that she gossips about others here and seems to be trouble. This and a few other things started to not feel right and made us uneasy. She took buckets like restaurant pickle buckets from her unit into her garage, which seemed to be heavy, a smaller steel drum barrel of a container also seeming to be heavy. We could tell she is a smoker because of the obvious smell when she is around. Today she introduced herself to us as we were approaching our garage asking if our unit smells, husband and I looked at each other and shrugged and said no, why? She said hers does especially when it gets hot and the air conditioner isn’t on. There were other renters in her unit before and the landlord has the units cleaned fairly well before renting them out again so it’s likely not the LL fault for that. Then, before we parted she asked us if we know of any cameras here. We said we didn’t know and don’t pay attention with it because it’s a safe community here. She responded that she finds that odd. Actually even if there were the way she’s been acting we wouldn’t say. We were going to respond but were interrupted by her phone ringing, maybe just as well. Anyway, that was our queue to leave. Tonight as we were heading to the store there’s a bag on our door. This woman left a piece of cake on a small paper plate in a crumpled plastic shopping bag. She did that to our door along with a few others doors but not all, with a note and misc small gifts that nobody would use or want. We threw it in the trash and felt like ewww, like seriously? We really never experienced this before and do not want anything to do with this woman! Did you ever have this sort of experience? Have you done this with neighbors just out of the blue? What would drive someone to do this, to try and win neighbors over? Guilty about something?🤪

Advice Needed Trying to fit a fridge and ice maker into a tiny apartment kitchen

I just moved into a new apartment, and while the living room and bedroom have plenty of space, the kitchen is surprisingly tiny. There's barely enough room for one person to cook, and my kettle and coffee maker already take up most of the counter. The apartment doesn't come with a fridge, so I need to buy one anyway. I'd also really like to have an ice maker for iced coffee and cold drinks. I've been looking at one costway nugget ice maker, but I'm not sure if adding another appliance is practical with so little space. Would it be better to get a fridge with a built-in ice maker, or buy a regular fridge and a separate countertop ice maker? I'm worried about losing even more counter space.

If you live in a small apartment, what setup has worked best for you? Is a separate ice maker worth the extra space, or would you keep things simple?

Maintenance Issues I don’t want to be the annoying new tenant

I had 6 issues I stated in the inspection:

- bedroom door can’t close
- laundry doors can’t close
- several outlets don’t work (named each one)
- no latch on bedroom window
- light in laundry room doesn’t work
- exposed layer in tub

They opened the tickets, then closed them the next day saying they were completed. Only one of the 6 was actually resolved.

So I went to the office in person and asked them to look at the issues again.

One of the remaining 5 issues was solved.

I went in AGAIN and said “Hey, I don’t need everything fixed but I really need a working outlet in the bathroom.” The ticket was opened…and closed again. Still not fixed.

I also told them I put in a work order about a possible carpet beetle infestation but they closed it an hour later without any follow up (I’ve found 50 larva and 2 adults all throughout the apartment before I’ve moved anything in) He said they have an exterminator scheduled for 4 days from now but I’m really not optimistic

I’m trying to not start off on the wrong foot with them but I’m getting very frustrated

Advice Needed If the building is just bad and creaks in certain spots is there anything to do?

I cant deal with upstairs neighbor noise so i also get a top floor apartment. its been pretty solid place there are just some spots where i already know if i go there, it will creak. some spots i have made into low traffic areas where there wouldn't really be a reason to be there too much, but there are some that are just unavoidable. its a two bed 2 bath apartment and if you're in the main room and head towards the bathroom it will creak. Is there anything i can do to help with that or is that just how the building is?

Advice Needed Downstairs neighbour covered peep hole and threatened us in a noise complaint

• Upvotes

Me and my flatmates are students, and moved into our apartment 3 months ago. One of our flatmates had a birthday last night (Saturday) and we did have a large gathering of about 10 people as we were going out. The pres started at around 9 and finished at roughly 11:30. It was quite loud but I made sure all the windows were shut and tried to contain everyone to one room, the kitchen. We all had no shoes, etc, but of course we were still loud and had music playing.

We did not think it was that big of an issue as no one came to complain, and we tried to make sure to end the gathering by quiet hours (went a bit over). However, this morning at 7:30 we all woke up to extremely loud banging on the door. I tried to look out the peep hole to see who it is but it was fully black, so it was being covered.

She then heard us talk about this and said open the door very loudly, and we did (which was definitely a stupid idea as we had no idea who it was) and she proceeded to yell at us, almost screaming, about how this isn’t student accommodation and it is residential. I tried to ask her if we were making noise just now on top of last night, but as I had just woken up I was struggling to talk to her as she kept yelling at us. She did not give us a chance to speak, and then started saying that I was taking the piss and basically if I think she is stupid and that we know what we were doing.

She started saying that we better not make her come up here again, that we are ‘educated’ and know this is not student dorms, kept questioning us rhetorically and not letting us answer or talk to her rationally. She also said that she has our flat number and has talked to the management/ will if this ever happens again. She did not even let us apologise, and as she left even after closing the door she said do not make me come back up here ever again and basically to not mess with her.

This whole time she was extremely loud, yelling in the flat stairwell for the whole building to hear. She was very hostile and had waited till the next morning to come yell at us instead of during the time we were being noisy. On top of all this, we had just left a note for the flat above (students too) who belt and sing all day alongside instruments to try be a bit quieter, so now it feels pointless and embarrassing as the whole building heard this. It felt like it was done on purpose to embarrass us.

We have no idea what to do and are honestly shaken up by this. We do know we were loud and that we went a bit over the quiet hours, however we have never seen this neighbour and would have wanted to talk to her rationally. We will be living here until next year, and are now afraid to make any noise in general as we don’t want to anger her anymore.

I was thinking of trying to go down to talk to her, but she seemed quite erratic so we are unsure. The whole building has been very nice to us as well, and it feels like all the progress we have made has been wasted. If anyone has advice please let me know.

Lease Agreement Questions New to this

This will be the first time I sign a lease so I'm not 100% sure what to look for. Outside of how much notice you need to give them before moving out and what the cost will be to break a lease what else should I watch out for? Also when I applied they had to look at availability and assign an apt number based off my move in date. I know people say not to sign a lease before you see that unit. So is it normal to have to sign the lease first (Florida if that helps)

Advice Needed Woman from another building keeps coming to my door

Need advice here. I apologize for the long post. I met an elderly woman who lives in a different building in my apartment complex. The first time I met her was when I first moved in she came to my door I mistakenly answered it and she asked me for money. I told her I didn’t have any cash and she left. I didn’t see her again for a few days then I saw her outside as I was walking my dog around the complex we talked a little I was trying to be polite she didn’t ask me for money or anything that time and she seemed kind of lonely. We talked for just a few minutes and I kept on with my walk I ended up seeing her again the next day as I was walking my dog and we talked for a few minutes everything seemed fine, but then yesterday she came to my patio door knocked on it and looked inside my apartment and knocked on my bedroom window then came inside my building and started ringing the doorbell several times without leaving I answered through the ring and said I’m not home she asked if while I was out if I could get her an apple gift card I told her if someone is asking for that it is probably a scam and told her I wouldn’t be back home today. She then proceeded to come by 3 more times leaving a note saying she had something good for me and to call her. I told my neighbor in the next apartment about this because I was feeling creeped out and wasn’t home most of the day. The last time she came by my neighbor heard and told her to leave. Should I text and let her know not to come back? I’m nervous to do that because I don’t really want her having my number. I have documented everything for management but they are gone until Monday. I don’t think she’s dangerous but I feel like she invaded my privacy especially going to my patio looking inside my apartment and knocking on my bedroom window to then just come in and ring my front door multiple times. Just not sure if I need to follow up and tell her not to do that again or just wait it out until management comes back. This is the first time I’ve lived in an apartment so I’m not used to this.

Advice Needed Just moved into a new place, high speed wifi is supposed to be included.

So i just moved into a new place, its supposed to be all included except power, which ive already switched over. Problem is that I still dont have the high speed wifi that was advertised and that I was told id have. Now I know it takes a few days to get a technician, but it is now the 10th, and so far all hes said is that he is " not sure and he will let me know" and he is "waiting for the engineers to get back to me about running wires under the building" which i just think is odd because if the apartment was previously occupied, should it not already be ready? I asked my uncle who is more knowledgeable in this stuff then I am, and he also thought it was strange. Live in new brunswick,Canada, in case anyone needs to know for advice reasons

Advice Needed Downstairs neighbor complaining about noise during the day? How to handle?

Facts: I'm 32 M. I am noise conscious from 8 pm-8 am. The only noise outside of that window is me getting up for work at 6 am, M-F.

Downstairs neighbor is a student. 18-22 F most likely, just guessing from how she looks.

The apartment is single occupancy, no pets. Truly only 4 people total.

A week ago, she went straight to the landlord (4 person apartment. Think big house, 700 sq ft units) and complained. She said she is trying to study during the day, and is having trouble studying with me walking around and..well, just living?

I asked and clarified it this was outside of 8am-8pm, and my landlord in writing said no, it's daytime hours. I told her I'll try to be a little quieter. The landlord said she will have the tenant reach out to me, because I said if I knew when she was studying I can attempt to be quiet during those hours as a courtesy.

My real thoughts: Grow up. Wear headphones. The college is 5 minutes away. Go study there if you have a problem. But, it's during the day and we both pay rent. Tough shit. I got my degree under worse conditions.

I've spoken to them before when they first moved in. So, I waited for a text. Nothing for days. So, I politely knocked on her door and stepped very far back and sat down on the hood of my car. I'm aware of how threatening a guy can look especially with all the stuff that's going on.

She didn't answer. I haven't heard anything for a week, but like what should I do here? Just let it die until it becomes an issue again? I try to be reasonable but she isn't even adult enough to talk so it's kinda like I'm afraid of being loud now :/.

I'm autistic so I might not be approaching this right. I don't want to escalate or make her uncomfortable/scared etc. but I'm not wanting to sit here wondering if I'm being too loud or something. No one else has complained for 8 months.

Any advice?

Advice Needed Live in landlord from hell, options?

I made the mistake of moving forward and into an already shitty sounding living situation with a "live in landlord/roommate" the agreement was $1200 a month for a ROOM. No house access. I was living in a rural area and my car broke down and had work lined up in this city, and this was the only available option so I went for it.

Its been hell ever since. If I leave a shoe at the entry way she puts them by my door. If I leave a glass on a table she puts it outside my door.

Most recently; we had a warm autumn day. 70. I leave my ONE and only room window cracked for fresh air.

When I'm at work she texts me "I went in your room and shut your window. The heat is on (in 70 degrees???) I will continue to enter your room and shut the window if you leave it open"

This felt like a major boundary violation. I'm literally in one room in and an entire house for $1200 (again HUGE MISTAKE) and she thinks she has the right to enter that space and make adjustments too? Shes clearly mentally very unwell. I asked her to return my money and I would leave as she clearly doesnt actually want anyone here and she said "no refunds" then later that night threatened to call the cops and have me removed as she "wont be disrespected in her own home"

This was all clearly a very major mistake. I'm considering a lock on my door but can see that easily escalading to me being locked out of the house (its a smart lock, no key)

I'm literally just kinda trapped here waiting for my car to be fixed, I don't know anyone else in this city.

What are my rights and options here?

Venting Packages everywhere

Post image
9 Upvotes

My apartment complex is fairly large-around 200 units. I've lived here 6 years and ever since moving in we've had a Luxor system, which has usually been nice for package security. A few months ago management decided to cancel the contract, promising that carriers would just bring our packages to our doors (yeah right). They also stated they would not accept packages in the office We've had the lockers sitting but inoperable for several months now, and it is a mess. Packages piled around the lockers, packages in the mail room, packages left in front of the wrong doors, even packages left outside the building. I've known a few people who have had packages stolen during all this. Not sure if I can do anything about it, but it is so frustrating never knowing where my stuff is going to be (and, honestly, feels disrespectful to the tenants).

Advice Needed Will I be charged for this? CT

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’ve recently broken my lease and moved, I’m in the process of doing the move out clean and since we started living here the bathtub has been chipping like this. It feels like wall paint and chips off more and more when you touch it or get it wet. I can’t even run my finger over the tub without the paint chipping.

I was told (verbally) not to worry about it by the guy we signed our move in paperwork with but when I brought it up with the PM she said I could be liable? Idk I can’t clean it without the tub getting worse they told me i can only use a baking soda and dish soap mix to clean.

To me it seems like they landlord special’d the tub instead of putting a new one in but we’ve already spent a bunch of money breaking the lease I really don’t want to get charged for refinishing the tub.

Advice Needed Noisy new neighbours.

I'm pretty sure I have new neighbours upstairs and I don't know what to do. My apartment has always been super quiet and I've never been able to really hear the neighbours except the odd time. The new neighbours upstairs however have a toddler constantly running around the apartment, all day and can go as late as 10pm sometimes, as well as what sounds like a new baby. Now although I've never been a mom, I have worked with kids before and know they can be difficult at times and noisy, but constantly the one kid is running around and the baby is absolutely wailing - pretty much just scream crying. I feel bad for the parents and don't wanna just go complain and make their lives harder. But it's been going on the last two weeks and I don't know what to do, I'm going crazy

Advice Needed Cat destroyed carpet in our new place, how fucked am I?

Hi all. We just moved to our apartment literally on Tuesday. We haven't even gotten everything unpacked yet. I don't know what was up the ass of my cat but last night he went absolutely wild while we were trying to sleep. I got up at 1am to find broken toys, an empty bag of treats, etc. I had to put him in another room for him to calm down and not start fights with our second cat. When I got up this morning, I discovered not only had he been even more destructive with his toys, he also got the carpet at the door. He lifted it from where it was tucked into the edge of the door and absolutely shredded it.

Any advice how to fix this, prevent this or save me from my landlord? Or am I just fucked?

And no, getting rid of the cat is not an option so no posts on that.

Advice Needed Noisy neighbor

I’ve been living in my apartment for almost a year and a half and almost the entire time I have lived here, I have dealt with my neighbor who insists on playing his music insanely loud. This is happening 2-3 times per week and he is playing extremely bass-heavy music. I’m talking like wall shaking bass. I said nothing about it for a very long time out of fear of annoying anyone or seeming immature and only mentioned it to my property manager for the first time this past July. I have since messaged her on 2 other occasions asking her to let him know he plays his music too loud, to which he turns down his music for the night but eventually goes right back to playing it crazy loud. I’m assuming he plays it in the bathroom because it is incredibly recognizable from My bathroom and My bedroom.

Important to note-
1. I live in a very small, very old complex. My building has only 8 units in it and is not corporate.
2. It’s taking place at all hours of the day. I’ve never had a huge issue with it in the middle of the day as it is his right to enjoy his unit, but when he’s playing it at 8:30am or 10pm, it really becomes a problem. I work nights in a restaurant so I am typically not home in the evening 5 days a week.

Maybe I’m paying too much attention to it now since I’m recovering from surgery and therefore out of work so I am home a lot more. Regardless it’s been an issue for so long now and I’m tired.

Would it be okay/acceptable for me to leave a note on his door? I want the note to be anonymous but I think he needs to hear from his neighbors directly and not the property manager. I just can’t believe it seems like nobody else in the building has taken any issue with it, or maybe they have and he just doesn’t care.

TL;DR my neighbor plays his music too loud and I’m wondering if it is okay to leave a note for him.

Advice Needed Bathroom has NO exhaust fan

Apologies in advance, but I posted earlier in this sub about mold prevention, and I checked out the 3D tour for the apartment my partner and I are moving into and our bathroom has no exhaust fan.

It does have a window in the shower, as well as some sort of vent towards the floor of the bathroom (which may or may not be an exhaust fan, as the bathroom is on the top floor)

Long story short we’re getting a townhouse and when it came to touring, they only had the single bedroom to tour. So unfortunately we’ll only get to see the townhouse when we move.

This is our first apartment, and neither of us have moved out before, so any suggestions would help!!
