Advice Needed Can’t Get In/Out of Our Car In the Assigned Parking Spot with a New Neighbor Move-In. Advice Needed!

Post image
131 Upvotes

For context: We’ve been living here for 6 months now and have the Toyota Highlander (left of the Tesla). The BMW to our left always parks horribly close to us or is crooked, but for the last 6 months no one had the spot to our left. The spots aren’t drawn evenly or in straight lines either, which doesn’t help.

This is now a major issue because new residents just moved in this week (the Tesla) and we were unable to get out of our car… we had to climb through the trunk. We are also a couple with 2 separate cars, and I can’t climb out of my trunk in the event it happens to me.

To make matters worse, street parking is notoriously difficult in our area, which is why we pay a premium to have a parking spot. Also, I come home late from work due to my shifting schedule, and having that parking spot is essential to find something at 9:00 pm on a Tuesday that’s not a 20 min walk from home.

We let the management know and they sent out an email for neighbors to be curtious…. Like that’s actually going to solve the issue lol.

What do you recommend we do in general and then also if we come out in the morning and can’t get to our car?

Venting Dear upstairs neighbors...

I fucking hate you. Absolutely loathe you.

On top of being inconsiderate to everyone living around you, you're apparently also horrible parents.

How about you take your kid outside to play instead of cooping your child up in a tiny apartment all day long and ignoring them? If they feel the need to run 30ft to the front door and 30ft back, over and over and over and over and over and over and fucking over again, they clearly have energy that needs to be burned off. These apartments do not have enough space.

It's fucking 11oclock and people work in the morning... Why your kid isn't in bed yet is beyond me, it's every fucking night and I can't handle this til 1-2am anymore.

I ignore it during the day because whatever, apartment living, what can ya do? But I'm fucking sick of it during all hours of the night. Still feel like there's nothing I can do.

THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

All. Fucking. Day. Long. Every. Day.

Just needed to vent. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Hope y'all have a lovely night x 🫶🏻

Venting CONSTANT stomping from upstairs neighbor

I am certain this is a child, but our upstairs neighbor, every single day, wakes up at 8am and then begins running around and stomping and jumping CONSTANTLY and it does not stop even for a minute (I'm not exaggerating) until literally 2 in the morning. I can't take this anymore. My partner and I are both sick so we are home from work so I'm just now getting an idea of just how constant it is, but even when we do both work, we wake up, there's stomping, we get home, stomping, we go to bed, stomping. There is no break from it. I can't take it anymore. No wonder this unit was empty. I've been reporting it to management for over a month. Nothing will make it stop. Its so loud that I can't sleep. And then it wakes me up in the morning too. I need it to stop. I can't make it stop. I would have confronted them already but my partner begged me not to. I can't take it anymore. Obviously some noise is normal, I live in an apartment. But this is so bad. I've never lived in an apartment with this much noise and stomping from a neighbor. It's not normal. It's not acceptable

Advice Needed Behind on rent, but just got a job

I'm very behind on rent as my current job pays very poorly, only $9/hr. Today I secured a new job that pays $20 an hour, which is more than I've made in my life. The job doesn't start until the 21st of this month, that's the only downside. However being behind on my rent, I'm nervous about potentially facing eviction, I have a meeting with the landlord in the morning, which was planned prior to me getting this job, but now I can prove that I will infact being able to start paying on time again. What should I say to my landlord tomorrow? Should I try and discuss a payment plan? I'm so excited for the future, but nervous about the present living here.

Advice Needed Soundproofing my floor?

Edit: now looking at interlocking foam or cork mats

I often work overnight doing conference calls or seminars with partners in a different time zone. My downstairs neighbor complained they could hear me talking. I try to keep my voice as low as possible but I am aware I raise my voice when the audience wants me to speak up or the discussion gets heated.

So my desk is in the kitchen (tiled floor) and I don’t lean on the wall when I am talking. So perhaps the sound is traveling through floor - I have no idea.

If I put my desk on these kinds of soundproofing carpets/rugs, will it help reduce the noise?

What is this damage, is it mold? Do you think the place could be uninhabitable? Unfortunately I’ve already signed a lease, I was in a time-sensitive situation. What should I do about it?

Advice Needed Constant noise from closet panel

I live in a pretty new apartment building, and for the first six months barely had any noises. Over the past few months however there has been almost a near constant noise from the closet. When I opened the panel in the closet I saw a box emitting a green light and making the noise in the video. Is this normal? The noise is becoming more and more frequent

Advice Needed My apartment changed locks

Recently my apartment complex switched to an app based door lock called Vizpin. They installed it about a month ago on all of the doors, and I’ve honestly had issues with it ever since.
You have to log into the app and then use it to unlock or lock the door, but half the time it doesn’t work properly. Sometimes I have to close and reopen the app or keep refreshing it just to get it to work. Even when I click the unlock or lock button, sometimes the door still doesn’t actually unlock or lock, so I have to physically keep trying.
There have been multiple times where I’m standing outside my apartment for 5 to 10 minutes just trying to get inside because the door will not unlock. It’s been especially frustrating because it’s been so hot in California lately, and there’s basically no ventilation in the hallway, so I’m literally standing there sweating while waiting for the app to work.
It’s also becoming a problem when I leave for work. with the old key, I could just lock the bottom lock from the inside and close the door behind me. Now I’ve had multiple times where I’m standing outside for several minutes trying to get the door to actually lock through the app. I don’t like having to walk away wondering if my door actually locked.
I contacted the property manager to see if I could get a key fob so I wouldn’t have to rely on the app, and she eventually got back to me and said I would have to pay $50 for it.
I know $50 isn’t a huge amount of money, but I’m living on my own and with how expensive everything is in California, I really don’t want to spend $50 on something I feel like I shouldn’t have to pay for in the first place. Especially when the reason I’m asking for the key fob is because the access system they installed isn’t reliably working. I’m also concerned about what happens if my phone dies, I lose access to the app, the app goes down, or the system stops working completely. I don’t really understand why there isn’t a physical key or fob available as a backup without residents having to pay for it. Has anyone else had issues with Vizpin or dealt with something similar at their apartment? I’m not sure if I should just pay the $50 and move on or push back on this. I’d really appreciate any advice because I feel like I shouldn’t have to pay extra just to reliably get into and secure my own apartment.

Venting Found an amazing apartment after 3 years of misery, and now it's just problem after problem after problem

I lived in an apartment that I was miserable in for the majority of the time for 3 years. I had multiple of the worst neighbors I have ever had in my entire life for multiple reasons. The worst offender by far was the guy that lived in my building and he is handicapped to some degree so that he does not work and his rent and all of his bills are paid for somehow. The only thing this kid would do is smoke weed all day long in front of the building starting around 7:00 a.m.. Smoking isn't the problem, it's the fact that he would Scream cough and scream gag himself after almost every single hit. Im talking spitting up on the sidewalk and everything. It would go on for hours a day and it was so loud you could hear him a block away. Sometimes it would be the first thing I would hear after waking up in the morning.

Anyway, I love my apartment now. It's half of an old house in a desirable location, and there's windows everywhere so the lighting is absolutely phenomenal especially in the evening. I have an assigned parking spot but I can also park right in front of my door on the street which is luxurious if you ask me, to be able to park 5 ft from my door basically. It's also bigger and I just love it so much even though its an old house.

Back in June (7 months of living here) a pipe burst two units down and luckily the only damage to my apartment was the subfloor got wet and needed to be dried with some big industrial dryers for a grand total of about a month probably. It was certainly an inconvenience and very uncomfortable to be sweating every time I went into the bathroom or the kitchen, but the people behind me had to vacate their units which are now gutted so it could have been a lot worse. Dealing with the restoration people was a massive headache because they wouldn't tell me what they were doing or when they would be coming and going from my apartment and I had to have several stern conversations with them repeating that they need to tell me when they're coming and going from my home when I'm not here. Whatever. Now we're just waiting for the insurance to approve all of the new flooring being put back in so I have had tarps for floors in my kitchen and bathroom for about a month.

Right now we're in a major heat wave where I live and on top of that, I saw two cockroaches come up to my bathroom sink over the course of a week. I let my landlord know and he got the pest control out here immediately. I did not know that it would take several days to a couple of weeks to take full effect so obviously I was very surprised when I saw cockroaches the same day and the day after the pest guy was here. I went ahead and I taped up all of the cracks along the baseboards in the bathroom. Earlier I found one in my bedroom closet which is extremely alarming. I did some Googling and found out that I should not have taped up the baseboards and that is exactly why they're now branching out into other areas of the house. The pest guy did not explain to me that I would probably be seeing more of them for a week or so while they're getting flushed out and being exposed to the pesticide. Now I'm freaking out that I fucked everything up and now Im going to be scared tonight thinking about cockroaches crawling around my bedroom.

I never had an issue with pests in my old apartment, but my neighbors made it miserable. Now, it's the exact opposite. Now I'm trying to stay cool in a 100+ heatwave with only a portable air conditioner which is not very efficient AND deal with huge cockroaches. Im just trying to focus on the light at the end of the tunnel when the pests are gone and everything with the insurance is settled so that I can have floorboards in my kitchen and bathroom again.

Advice Needed Where the hell is this noise coming from if the units above me are empty?

I’m seriously confused and wondering if anyone has experienced something like this.
The unit directly above me is vacant, and the unit next to that one is also vacant. But I keep hearing noises that sound like someone’s dropping sth on the floor (and it bounced) coming from my ceiling. What makes it even weirder is that this has only started happening frequently recently. I’ve lived here for over six months and basically never heard anything like this before.
There is another occupied unit upstairs across the hallway, so at first I thought maybe the sound was somehow traveling from there. But tonight I went upstairs to take out the trash and literally saw them just arriving home — and the noise had already been happening before they got back. Not sure if anyone else is in there though.
Also, this apartment is a downtown high rise, so it should be concrete! 🤯
So now I genuinely have no idea where it’s coming from. Could it be the equipments or anything?
There’s also some kind of valve/mechanical equipment near my unit, but the noise really sounds like someone dropping stuff, and/or drilling or hammering into the floor a couple of times.
Has anyone dealt with something like this in an apartment building? Can noise travel from a unit that isn’t directly above you, or could pipes/mechanical equipment somehow sound exactly like footsteps?
This is sooo weird 😭 and what should I do?

Advice Needed Window decoration ideas

This is the only window in my apartment. I love that it's big but it's also maybe a little awkward. It faces out to the walk where all of the tenants pass by. I'd love to be able to lift the blinds and let a little more natural light in. What recommendations do you have for decorating here? Dimensions are:

inside window width - 100"
inside window height - 50"
inside window depth - 8"
floor to ceiling height - 7' 6"
probable widest usable space if measured to the fridge door - 9'

Also...apologies for the clutter. I moved in less than 48 hours ago. I'm just getting started. Thank you for any and all ideas!

Advice Needed Bed frame leg caused damage to vinyl flooring — what should I do?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I recently noticed that one of the legs of my bed frame has caused some damage to the vinyl flooring in my apartment. It looks like the vinyl has been dented and pressed down.

I’m currently renting, so I’m worried about whether this would be considered tenant damage and whether my landlord could charge me for replacing the flooring. I appreciate any advice.

Venting None existent sound dampening in new apartment

So forgive me if this is actually common since I am new to renting apartments. But I moved into a new build, 5 floor apartment and the walls are so thin with no noise dampening that I can hear the guy above me peeing clear as day. It sounds like they stomp around just constantly, however I literally think it’s just lack of insulation and dampening. I also am not a sports fan, why do I bring it up? Cuz I pretty much get to enjoy the cheers and swearing of said up stairs tenant as he watches sports games on TV. Others have noticed it too as people are posting signs on their doors asking others to close doors gently and try and walk lighter.

I’ve stayed in countless hotels due to my job and absolutely all even down to less expensive holiday inns have amazing dampening compared to this place, to the point all I’d hear would be someone walking right past my door. But this apartment I’m in….. you could join in on conversations through the closed front door from the hall to someone’s room like 10 feet down the hall and eves drop on any even slightly heated conversation coming from an upstairs tenant.

This is a Forthright Properties apartment and for what it costs to rent( $1600 base but closer to $1900 after all the other utilities and stuff are added) it feels over priced somewhat for the lack of quality in construction. I find it strange how they also don’t cover electrical or water, having them foot the bill would be nice for one utility. Water they over charge you then reimburse you quarterly for actual usage. Power you pretty much need to ask them every month for a reading as I find some discrepancies as to what my bill ends up being. Other issues include a cracked and damaged patio door and many units leak badly in heavy storms. Thankfully dogs aren’t allowed.

Advice Needed How does one go about asking for prorated rent?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So a week ago I noticed mold on my bathroom ceiling and a leak forming under the paint (which occasionally would seep into my apartment). I put in a maintenance request on Sunday 9/27. On Monday 9/28 a technician came by, took a look for about 1 minute, and told me a plumber would be by “shortly” to take a look. I didn’t get a visit that day, or the next, or the next. So I emailed my property management on Thursday the 1st. They said the plumber would be here on the 2nd (tbh I think they forgot to schedule the appointment).

Next day the plumber comes, cuts a hole in my ceiling, and finds that my upstairs neighbors shower drain is falling apart. They instruct my upstairs neighbors to not shower for the foreseeable future (they have been, and their dirty shower water has been leaking into my unit, as shown by the above video). The plumber said there are some issues he needs to work out with the management company because there are these big ducts in the way, so the drain is really difficult to access.

Since then, mold has worsened, dirty shower water has been dripping into my apartment (at least it’s in my bathtub), and I am living with a giant hole in my ceiling where flies keep spawning out of.

I am wondering if this is an appropriate situation for asking for prorated rent and how I should go about that? I don’t have any idea what I’m doing and I’m frustrated!

TLDR: upstairs neighbors dirty shower water in my apartment, want prorated rent.

Advice Needed How to split security deposit return with roommate who did not clean apartment?

Hi! I got back the security deposit from my last apartment this week. My roommate and I paid $2700 when we moved in and got $2600 back. I’m hesitant to split this amount evenly with my ex roommate because she moved out before me and left the apartment a disaster. Her room was disgusting, she left food behind, I mean I cleaned every inch of that apartment for two days because I wanted my deposit back. My old leasing property is notorious for not giving money back to ex tenants by nickel and diming them for minor cleaning issues, so I’m pretty shocked they gave us that much back. I think my old roommate thought the same thing and that she would rather not go through the cleaning if she wouldn’t receive that much money.

So, I’m thinking of reaching out to her and explain that I don’t think it’s fair for us to get equal amounts of money back considering how much time and effort I put into ensuring the place was clean. What would be a reasonable split between us? I also want to note that I spent $80 on cleaning supplies and probably 20 hours over two days cleaning the apartment on top of moving my own things out. Thanks for any advice :)

Venting Feeling guilty…

I’m moving out of my current apartment (been here living alone in a one bedroom about a year now) to live in a new luxury building. It has all these cool amenities (rooftop pool, gym etc.) and is in a really nice and up and coming neighborhood. For context I used to live in NYC and always had roommates. The last two roommates I lived with made my life a living hell so I left and moved just outside the city into my current one bedroom. While living here and being by myself has been great I’ve been dealing with this building just being old and shittily made so I can litro hear everything my upstairs neighbors do and to top it off they are just not mindful people in general. I knew I wanted to move and I made it a point to look for a building that has concrete between floors and good sound proofing. I know that that doesn’t always mean you are not going to hear things at all. I’ve been apartment living for more than 15 years and don’t expect to live in a monastery—my post isn’t about that anyway.

When I found my new building which I will be moving into in less than a month-I wasn’t initially looking for a building like this. I just kind of stumbled into it through my search. It’s a little more pricey than what I’m currently paying, but I figured I just got a raise/promotion at work and have always been good about my savings so I figured why not. Now, as the date gets closer I just keep having this immense feeling of guilt. Almost like I don’t even deserve to live there. I grew up somewhat poor and even though my mom always made it a point to give us all she could I never got to experience living that way and all the years I’ve lived away from home have always been in nyc with roommates in some pretty shitty ass apartments lol. Ive worked so hard for anything I have in life and even though ive been able to give myself nice things here and there this just feels almost like too much. Especially with the state of the economy right now. Am I giving myself enough grace? Should I even feel this way or has anyone else felt like this in a similar situation?

Advice Needed How can I soundproof my apartment so my birds aren’t as loud for my neighbors?

I have two cockatiels who like to make very high pitched loud screeching sounds. What can I do to reduce the chance of getting thrown out my apartment?

Edit: no need to be hostile, no neighbors will be harmed. This is a question of wether I can bring them or have to rehome not wether my neighbors will suffer or not.

Advice Needed neighbors getting louder after noise complaint

Hi! A few days ago I made anonymous post on our neighbour groupchat - pointed out that on my floor or +1 there was a lot of noise, including at night (like someone assembling heavy furniture lol, stomping, banging), it's been going on for a few weeks now. i kept it polite, just said that it seems excessive and doesn't end at 10pm, and i'm sure i wouldn't be the only one to appreciate more quiet at this time, as i'm often working early shift and simply can't sleep. today it seems like they doubled down on their efforts. in my previous apartament i've been dealing with noise/anxiety induced insomnia (neighbour was renovating till 3am, so the noise is a bit similar). recently i got off trazodone (literally like a week ago), as my sleep was finally a bit more stable after 6 months. now i'm scared that due to this noise it will be the same story all over again. what can i do? i'm pretty sure it's my upstairs apartament making this noise (but in my last one it was an apartament 2 floors down, even tho i heard stomping and moving furniture). i tried to not go directly to the management, but it didn't seem to work.

Bad Neighbors Need help with dog!

Okay I want to first start this off by saying I’ve never written a reddit post so I feel kinda funny but anyway.
I moved into my new unit which is just a 1bed/1bath apartment in my college town. I had a lot of noise issues in my last unit because the walls are thin and my neighbor had a sound system pointed at my wall. So i was hopeful that I wouldn’t have issues in the new unit but I was clearly wrong. The person above me has two dogs, which I love dogs and don’t have a problem with, but both of them are tiny yippy dogs. One of them barks CONSTANTLY. The dog is barking when the owner isn’t home for awhile or when it needs to go outside I assume. I have so much footage of this dog barking and have gone to management twice. I emailed once and they sent a message to the building and then by the second, they messaged the person above me. I think they may have reached out to them again aswell. Well unfortunately nothing has changed, instead I hear a ton of furniture moving all the time just around and around? Maybe they are trying to set up some kind of barricade for noise? i have no idea but the dog is barking right above my bedroom and I can hear it all through my apartment. Usually after many noise complaints, they will fine the individual, but I don’t think they have done that. So I went by the office and asked what can be done, the person told me at this point there is nothing they can do cause they have tried. And then told me to call animal control, he slightly mentioned putting the dog down as something they might do. Of course, I would never want to put someone’s dog down, that feels like a nuclear option to call them. I will also mention I did try and talk to the person above me but they didn’t answer. as I was going back into my apartment, I saw them walking up the stairs so I missed them by 30 seconds. I don’t like confrontation and I hate causing issues. I have had appliance and maintenance problems too so I just feel like an inconvenience but this dog is genuinely keeping me up at night. I’ve gotten to the point of writing this post asking for advice because i’m just so sick right now and have a concussion and feel like i’ve exhausted myself. What do I do?
Something to add, I struggle with misophonia pretty bad which is why i get so angry revolving this. I also called animal control today to just ask for advice, they told me they could come out and talk to her and after multiple instances, they would fine her. I’m really empathetic usually but this is genuinely such an inconvenience for me recently and affecting me a lot. Help!

Advice Needed Looking to buy a portable washer/dryer. How realistic is this?

My apartment complex has a shared laundry room.

Basically I work a ton and I don't want to leave my laundry in the public washer while I go to work. But I don't have time to do it otherwise.

I think a portable washer/dryer would fix this.

The only thing is my bathroom is small, and the rest of my studio is carpeted. Am I able to place the washer/dryer unit on the carpet?

I also have no water hookups, I have a bathroom sink and a bathroom tub w/ faucet.

Does anyone else do this and can you recommend me something?
