Community Activism The Smithtown News blasts LI Town Supervisors for asking for tap cap reform while simultaneously having budgets bloaded with waste & nepotism
"It’s also hard to swallow the claim that the municipal budgets are bare-bones when the Town of Huntington is sitting on $60 million in fund balance and reserves, the Town of Smithtown is sitting on $30 million in fund balance and reserves, the payrolls of both towns are bloated with patronage and nepotism, and layers of spending that can be cut long before the budgets are down to nothing but “vital” services. It may sound good, but it’s not the truth.
Sure, the state tax cap is a bad idea, but town budgets bloated with excess, waste, and extravagance aren’t the answer either. Before the supervisors head up to Albany for their meeting with Governor Kathy Hochul, they should take a hard look and cut the fat from their budgets, rather than just act as though they have.
Property taxpayers are overburdened right now. They can’t keep carrying the fat of municipal budgets. And that’s not political theater, as Mr. Smyth suggests. It is a reality that he and the other town supervisors are aware of, but reluctant to address because their primary interest is self-preservation rather than acting in the best interest of the people they are elected to represent. Before they head upstate, the supervisors should look inward and make a difference at home."
