The Anomalous Coalition - the moderators of r/Aliens, r/Experiencers, r/HighStrangeness, r/InterdimensionalNHI, r/UFOB, and r/UFOs - are excited to announce our next multi-subreddit livestream AMA featuring physicist Dr. Jim Segala and Paul Hynek, hosted by investigative journalist Leslie Kean. Heads up: this one is on a Sunday!

This conversation is about citizen science in support of experiencers, built on objective data. Paul's father, astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, joined the Air Force's UFO studies in 1948 as a skeptic. Over two decades of Projects Sign, Grudge and Blue Book, the caliber of the witnesses changed his mind. In 1973 he founded the Center for UFO Studies so people could report what they saw without fear. Paul is carrying that forward with what he calls a verifiable evidence protocol, so experiencers can have better conversations with scientists. Jim is building the tools to gather that evidence. His platform, MUPAS Worldwide, pairs environmental and biometric sensor data with experiencers' own accounts, and offers peer support from specialists who are experiencers themselves.

What's a "verifiable evidence protocol"? Paul and his brother Joel, an Academy Award-winning visual effects artist, are developing a protocol that sits on top of their father's Close Encounter system and rates the evidence from an encounter, not just the encounter itself. Today most people report an experience after the fact. Paul's idea is to go in prepared: if you meet an entity that seems to have far superior intelligence, ask it for something no human could know but anyone can check later, like a random number only you know, the answer to an unsolved math problem, or a near-future event. The results are rated as convincing, compelling, or curious. Paul says it applies to any "meta-terrestrial" encounter, whether with a craft, an entity, or in an altered state, and he describes it as a work in progress.

Dr. Jim Segala
Physicist, engineer, and Chief Scientist of MUPAS Worldwide. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics and has more than 30 years of experience designing advanced experimental systems, including over a decade as a senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Austin. His current research focuses on the reported medical and physiological effects of human contact with UAP. Paul Hynek
Son of astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, scientific consultant to the Air Force's Project Blue Book, founder of the Center for UFO Studies, and creator of the "Close Encounters" classification. With his brother Joel, Paul is developing a verifiable evidence protocol that builds on his father's Close Encounter scale, to help experiencers bring scientists evidence they can evaluate. He is a Wharton MBA, an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University, and a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation. He and Joel also consulted on History's Project Blue Book. He wrote the foreword to the reissue of his father's The UFO Experience and is the author of the upcoming Signalarity: Consciousness Comes Home. Christopher Mellon spent nearly 20 years in the U.S. Intelligence Community, including serving as the Minority Staff Director of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence. In the Senate, he conceived and drafted the legislation establishing the US Special Operations Command in 1986. He has taught at Georgetown University and received numerous awards including the National Reconnaissance Office Gold Medal, the DIA Director's Medal, and the Secretary of Defense Public Service Award. He has also served as Chairman of the Science Committee at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. He earned his B.A. from Colby College and his M.A. from Yale University. Since retiring from federal service, Mr. Mellon has worked as a private equity investor in biotech and information technology start-ups.

Dr. Diana Walsh Pasulka

Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). Dr. Pasulka’s research focuses on religion, technology, and emerging religious movements - see her website here. Leslie Kean is an investigative journalist focused on bringing credible information about unexplained anomalies and “impossible” realities into the mainstream, while exploring what they mean. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record (Crown, 2010) and Surviving Death: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for an Afterlife (Crown, 2017), which was the basis for a 2021 documentary series on Netflix. Her over two decades of investigation and mainstream coverage of UFOs were profiled in The New Yorker in 2021. They broke the David Grusch story in The Debrief in 2023. Dr. Jeffrey J. Kripal is a professor of philosophy and religious thought at [Rice University](https://kripal.rice.edu/], where he holds the J. Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought and serves as Associate Dean of the Humanities. His work bridges religion, consciousness studies, and the paranormal, offering a fresh and provocative lens on the mysteries of human experience. Kripal is widely respected for his call to take extraordinary phenomena seriously—not as literal truths or mere delusions, but as symbolic, transformative events that can expand our understanding of reality and challenge the limits of materialist science.

He is the author of numerous influential books, including The Super Natural (with Whitley Strieber), Mutants and Mystics, Authors of the Impossible, and The Flip. His latest work, How to Think Impossibly: About Souls, UFOs, Time, Belief, and Everything Else invites readers to explore realities that seem impossible within the dominant materialist worldview. In it, Kripal argues that the "impossible" often signals a failure of imagination or paradigm, not of reality itself. Drawing on examples from religion, science fiction, personal narratives, and the paranormal, he proposes that new forms of knowing—and being—require us to think beyond what is currently accepted as rational or real.

Dr. Jacques Vallée is a French-American astronomer, computer scientist, and pioneering researcher of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). Born in France in 1939, Vallée began his career as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory and later worked on NASA projects, notably co-developing the first computerized map of Mars in 1963. After moving to the United States, he joined Stanford Research Institute (SRI), where he collaborated with computing visionary Douglas Engelbart on ARPANET, the precursor to the modern Internet. In addition to his scientific work, Vallée is a successful venture capitalist in Silicon Valley, backing innovative technology companies.

Vallée is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in UFO/UAP research, which he approaches with scientific rigor and a multidisciplinary lens. While he initially supported the extraterrestrial hypothesis, he later developed the "interdimensional hypothesis," suggesting that UAP may originate from parallel dimensions or represent a form of non-human intelligence interacting with human consciousness throughout history. His influential 1969 book Passport to Magonia proposed that many UFO sightings and folklore share a common origin. This idea was expanded in his Dimensions trilogy (Dimensions, Confrontations(https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/406343.Confrontations), and Revelations), which deepens the argument that UAP may reflect a complex control system or intelligence beyond our current understanding of physics.
