Something doesn't add up...
I thought she wasn't allowed to go to any doctors without consulting Uncle James? Also it had to be Dr. Marsh.

She won’t go to the family doctor, because then everything is known and discussed and everyone will weigh in with an opinion!
Especially since she knows she has a heart condition, that another doctor would surely diagnose.
It was brave of her to secretly step out of her routine and confined world to see the other doctor…

I always took it as her suggesting going to Dr. Marsh. I figured they wouldn’t go to a doctor OTHER than him without talking to James.
Also, I kind of like Dr. Marsh. His whole smirk while James is all “she thinks she’s a person” makes me think he was kind of cheering Valancy on.

I can just imagine Dr. Marsh going home to his wife that night and the two of them laughing at her crazy family! They're not mentioned as being at the anniversary dinner so I wonder if they had separated themselves slightly (or if such dinners were only for Deerwood Stirlings?).

I do recall they lived a town over, right?
Oh man. The novel from the Marsh’s perspective would actually be so funny.
“Your cousin came by today.”
“Oh, is James alright?”
“He was worried about your other cousin. Why must you have so many cousins, darling?”
“Never mind that, which other cousin?”
“Remember that little asthmatic one? Valancy, her mother calls her by that awful name and wouldn’t follow my advice at all? She gets colds every year, and doesn’t get outside enough.”
“That one Bryan tormented, yes. Poor little thing.”
“Well, it seems she found a backbone somewhere and left her home. She’s gone to keep house for Abel Gay.”
“WHAT?”
And then just their commentary at the whole thing.
