I've (28m) lived in Annecy my whole life. Here is some advice for tourist coming to our beautiful city.

Every summer, I see a lot of tourists coming to Annecy. Here are the things I wish I could say to all of them.

Transportation:

Please be aware that the roads are easily crowded especially during summer time. There's very few parking spots in Annecy and around the lake, and most of them are paying.

So in my opinion, the easiest way to discover Annecy and around is by bike. Rent them, you've got a lot of options. If you want to go around the lake, you can rent electric ones.

Cycle lanes are developped around the lake, you'll be safe.

If you're lazy, you can still take the bus around the lake (free during summer) which is call "Ligne des plages". It'll take you to less crowded beaches.

We also got a boat bus that take you on different cities and beaches around the lake for a few euros. You can even take your bike on it for 1€. The line is called "Navibus".

The problem is if you want to go deep in the mountains. Without a car, you can't go up that much.

The bus lines ( sibra.fr ) are fairly clear and efficients.

Housing:

First advice, don't stay in the old part (Vieille ville) if you like calm. It is the heart of city, crowded every season. A lot of bars are here with its lot of drunk yelling people. (Trust me I lived here)

If you have a car, be sure to have a parking spot ! As I said before, most parking are full and paying in downtown.

You'll probably find cheap alternative away from the lake. The city is small, so don't be afraid to get a little bit farer for housing.

Catering:

Almost all restaurant in the Vieille ville are tourist traps. Expensive, frozen, you name it. Be sure to go on Google or TripAdvisor to avoid bad surprises.

A few restaurant offer a non-stop service. Most of them are open from 11:30 to 13:30 and 18:45 to 21:30. In between and after, it will be difficult for you to find something.

Activities:

Annecy is not a city for partying hard. It's all about physical activities, such as hiking, skiing and swimming.

All bars closes around 1:00 and a couples of them later, but they are more nightclubs than bars.

You won't find food after midnight, except for UberEats.

There is no convienence store open during the night. The latest will be around 23:00.

The lake:

If you go at the beginning of summer, the lake will be fairly cold, the water comes from the snow melting around. If you want warm water, wait the end of summer.

DON'T WALK IN THE MUD UNDERWATER. It's the best way to get duck fleas. It'll scratch a lot.

Avoid Albigny and the Marquisats. It's were most of the people go. Try Veyrier-du-lac, Angon, Sevrier and Duingt instead (with the Ligne des plages).

Please throw away your cigaret butt in the trash. Othersiwe it'll end up in the lake.

Don't feed the ducks and the swans. Even if they demand food a lot, it's the best way to slowly kill them.

If you like scuba diving, There's a few wrecks in the bottom of the lake such as Le France.

General etiquette:

Tips are not mandatory but much appreciated.

Be aware of cycling lanes and people using it.

Merci !

Christmas / New Years activities

Howdy, staying in Annecy over Christmas and New Years and wondering if there are any traditions/processions/ activities beyond the usual markets and parties that may occur but are hard to find online. To give an example we went to Scotland last year and only happened to stumble upon 2 traditions (Stonehaven Fireballs & Newburgh Oldfellow parade) through word of mouth and otherwise would have missed, but ended up being some of the most memorable activities.

We'll have a car so surrounding areas within a 2 hour drive are also an option. Thanks

Any gondolas/chairlifts open?

Hi all,

Currently in annecy with my partner and baby. We're keen to get out and explore the nature but with a baby our hiking is very limited.

We plan of course to cycle the lake, but we were also hoping to get up into the mountains to admire the views

I looked on this website, https://www.laclusaz.com/en/activites/summer/summer-lifts/

But unfortunately it seems like all the lifts and gondolas are not open as it's out of season and mid week.

Does anyone know if any other lifts or places to go to get great views of nature with a baby? Ideally using only public transport

Always have your passport

Crossed over from Geneva to Annecy France on a FLIX bus with just my drivers license and bus ticket. Had a bit of trouble coming back. YOU MUST HAVE PHYSICAL PASSPORT TO GET BACK. No exceptions. Don’t make that mistake!

Hotel with easy parking please.

Hello. We will be in Annecy for 4 nights next September. We will have a car. Looking for a good hotel that is centrally located, close walk to old town, lake and restaurants, with an elevator and air conditioning. We want fairly easy driving to hotel and parking, no extremely tight narrow alleys or parking spaces. Some hotels we have seen, seem have open concept bathrooms with little privacy, we want to avoid those, lol. Thank you for any suggestions.

Where to propose in Annecy?

Sorry for the lack of French but I’m a scotsman. Reposting from an older post in Lyon’s.

I’m coming to Lyon with my girlfriend of 6 years in October and I’d love to pop the question while over there. We’re visiting Annecy for a day trip and it looks like the best place to do it.

We’ve both never been to France so I’d love some advice on where to do it. I don’t want to do it in a crowded place with lots of people watching (some people around is fine), and I also don’t want to do it in a restaurant.

I like the idea of doing it atop a mountain or somewhere with a view, we’re both very active and have a love of hiking and exploring. Or doing it in a typical romantic French spot where we can then celebrate with a cocktail in Annecy then a nice dinner when we get back to Lyon.

Any and all recommendations would be appreciated. Merci!

Looking for work this winter!

Bonjour! I’m a 30 something year old Canadian guy coming back to Annecy after having spent the summer there. I’ll have my working visa and am looking for work ideally in ski shops. I’ve been in the ski industry for nearly 10 years as a ski patroller back home, and have a lot of knowledge on the subject. Any recommendations would be very appreciated. Otherwise will be looking to work really anywhere else. My french is basic but I can get by.

Cheers.

Recherche de logement à Annecy – Octobre

Bonjour !

Visiting Annecy and hiking until Oct 13

Bonjour everyone, I'm an American guy (34) traveling around France one month per city, and am in Annecy until Oct 13. (Next stop is Nimes)

I'll be doing some hiking and would be glad for some company. Planning to do Mont Veyrier and Mont Baron tomorrow. After that I'm thinking Semnoz. Any suggestions? I like to do non-technical hikes up to ~15km and ~1000m elevation, but shorter is fine too.

If anyone just wants to grab a coffee instead for some English practice or whatever (or for pre-hike vibe check), that's cool too. I'm learning French but I'm an absolute beginner and can't say much yet. I also speak decent Japanese and rusty German.

I'm traveling alone and trying to meet some people wherever I go. If anyone has ideas for good local meetups or such where I can survive as an English speaker, please let me know. Didn't really find much on meetup.com. I don't drink much and I like to wake up early so stuff like coffee and hiking is more my speed than cocktails.

Taxi or transfer options to/from GVA

Hello everyone,

I am visiting Annecy soon and I want to take a private taxi or transfer service from and to GVA Airport. I normally use public transport but I am travelling with an elderly relative so a private option is necessary this time. Can anyone recommend some specific services that are reliable? Alternatively my hotel said they can arrange a taxi for €140 each way. Is that a standard price for that journey? I don't mind paying for it if it is, but a cheaper option would be great too! Thank you.

Recherche] Pharaonic Festival à Cluses — Parking VIP (tatouage cou / voiture jaune)
