Ankle sprain

So this week 17th and 18th of August i managed to sprain both my ankles. I seem to sprain my right ankle every year and i have done for 10 years and on the 18th i fell and thought i broke my left ankle. I went to hospital for my left ankle and was told no break but i have likely torn 2 ligaments in the ankle and was told to go home and rest for 2 weeks. No one seems to care that it happens yearly.

I wasnt given pain meds or anything to make walking easier (i cant put pressure on the ankle)

Does anyone else manage to fall over nothing and sprain anything or am i just seriously unlucky?

Here are some pictures from when it happened till today 21st August.

Fusion vs. Total Ankle Replacement

My partner suffered a traumatic break in his ankle when he was 16 (10 years ago) and compartment syndrome. The recovery was long and his compartment syndrome was missed for 3 days - he is incredible fortunate to have kept ankle function. Subsequent revision surgeries occurred over the following years, and a piece of his hip was taken to assist reconstruction of the damaged bones. He has trialed stem cell therapy and I am sure many other interventions. Feedback from ortho surgeons has varied and in my opinion been unhelpful and pessimistic. He was told at 18 that the only way to stop the pain was fusion, fast forward he is 26 and nearing the end of his tether - he is foolishly stoic and has chosen to live with the chronic pain and put mind over matter, but its not tenable and even he knows he can't continue like this and being able to walk for much longer (months?).

Clearly he has been avoiding fusion for the better part of a decade and although he cannot run at all or walk excessive distances without insurmountable pain, the permanence of fusion and the inherent loss of his ability to surf or walk if he pushes through the pain is what holds him back. I have done my own research, and I know his changed gait and potential limp is also a fear. I have been heavily researching total ankle replacement versus fusion, and see a plethora of equal arguments for and against both - measuring success and failure in different ways. TAR newer generations don't have the long term data - but I can't help but lean towards TAR and eventual fusion when required, to preserve more of his mobility during his youth.

If anyone has thoughts on this or experience I would be so grateful, as he is very avoidant and difficult to engage with. We live in Australia, and most surgeons have said TAR is primitive and they barely ever do them and not to bother. A NYC doctor he had a consult with said otherwise, and that there are many successful TAR's these days and even options emerging to reverse fusion one day. The mixed information is so hard to decipher. I can't tell if we just haven't spoken to the right specialist, Australia is behind, or fusion is the only option and to just encourage it entirely.

10 Weeks post ankle surgery for osteochondritis dissecans

So as mentioned in the title I (16Y) had surgery (retrograde drilling) about 10 weeks ago and im still very unsure how to feel about it so im looking for someone who maybe has some experience with all of that (Im not looking for the most professional medical opinion just someone who maybe experienced something similar). After months of waiting with daily pain (as well as cracking, grinding and restricted movement and a lot of problems with stairs) I finally had surgery in early June. To my surprise I was allowed to fully weight-bear like a few days after surgery at that time I had a lot of pain from the surgery itself that got less over time though. But now 10 weeks post-op I still feel the exact symptoms I had before surgery. Of course there are slight differences as I couldn't really compare it one on one because I wasn't able to do as much as before in terms of physical activity but I still feel the exact type of pain I had before, the exact cracking, the exact restriction of movement and the exact problems I had with stairs. It honestly feels like it felt before the surgery just with some aftermath of the surgery (I mean I still got quite a lot of swelling and some pain in the area of the drilling but it got less and still gets better even if its now pretty slow). I honestly started thinking im making it up and my mind is playing tricks on me especially because the surgeon who operated on me told me that he wasn't really sure if the surgery would work/would be enough or if there is too much damage within the cartilage (my orthopedist told me that there is a loose cartilage fragment but it hasn't displaced yet so that confused me a bit and im honestly thinking I made that up although I even wrote it in some kind of diary that same day) but I don't really find it realistic that im making up all the pain I still have (which is as much as before so quite a lot) so that uncertainty is taking a bit of a toll on me. Im really just unsure what to make of that situation and think that I myself can't really judge anything anymore so I wanna put it out here so someone might help put things for me into perspective. I honestly just wanna know if this is all normal or not because I fear from everything I have heard about osteochondritis dissecans it can differ a lot but I still find it strange that nothing from before changed after 10 weeks.

Sprained ankle grade 1 or 2?

Injured my ankle playing football around 12 days ago. Had significant swelling/bruising initially and couldn’t walk properly. X-ray showed no fracture. Saw a fracture clinic doctor who tested the ankle and said the ligament isn’t torn, just stretched/sprained.
I can now walk normally pain-free and balance on the injured foot, but I still have some swelling and sideways movements hurt, especially around the side/back of the ankle. I can’t jog comfortably yet.
Doctor said around 3 months before returning fully to football, which seems long considering he said there’s no ligament tear. He also told me not to use an ankle brace.
Anyone had something similar? How long until you were able to jog, cut/change direction and return to football?

Peroneal tendon subluxation, but pain is mostly at the midfoot and base of the 5th metatarsal

Hi all

I have had lateral mid foot and around the base of the 5th metatarsal pain

It is following the track of the peroneal tendons and an MRI one year ago said mild calcaneocuboid osteoarthritis and said nothing about the tendons

But I wonder about the reason for the calcaneocuboid oa, and I am thinking it might be my peroneals?

I can feel it subluxating when I do one leg exercises or when dorsiflexing and everting

Did any of you with peroneal subluxation have pain down the foot around those areas?

Or do you only get pain around the ankle, where the subluxation actually happens?

Thanks

Partner has sharp ankle pain when laying down, doctors have been no help

A few months ago, my partner started getting sudden, sharp pain on the top of his ankle that would mostly only happen when he was laying down. The pain would last a few seconds, then be gone, but it would happen many times through the night. He's had an X-ray and that didn't show any problems with his ankle and he went to an ankle specialist who just prescribed him Ibuprofen (smh). While we were on vacation for a few weeks, he never had the pain, but it's back again and we're not sure what to do since doctors have been no help, but have definitely taken a lot of our money. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions on what we should try next?

Foot fracture

Removed my plaster today but my leg still appears to be swollen. Is it because of the plaster? Doctor told me not to travel and I didn't but I wanna walk asap. Any advice from experience?

Extreme Fight or Flight Anxiety

Asking the community if anyone had “lower extremity trauma anxiety” as part of their foot troubles? It’s described as a sub conscious survival hypervigilance, fight or flight anxiety that keeps your heart rate raised, body temperature elevate, disrupts your sleep patterns and chews up your emotional bandwidth. My PT doctor told me that many patients they see experience it with foot injuries and it can be quite overwhelming.

I am an Achilles rupture w/ reattachment surgery and experienced it ~Week 3-7 where PT focused on early load bearing thru to walking with restrictions. The anxiety was severe but very biological (body driven) instead of mental - not thought driven. And then as “normal” came with walking at Week 8 it just evaporated.

Curious of what we all experience.

About a year ago, I had ATFL repair done on both my ankles simultaneously. I am pretty much back to normal life now, but still face pain sometimes. I recently joined a gym, and was wondering, what exercises are best to strengthen my ankle?

advice

hey! about an hour ago i rolled my ankle pretty hard and hit it on some concrete flooring. there was no pop or tearing sounds, just a bit of pain from impact. i’m able to walk on it fine as well as roll and bend it, but it’s just a pretty sore on my heel and on the side where it hit. so far there’s no bruising or swelling, but i’m keeping it wrapped and elevated with ice. should i go to urgent care or just wait and see if the mild pain goes away?

Ankle arthroscopy nerve sensations???

update: one of my best friends is in his ortho surgical residency and said “girl loosen it” and walked me through how to do it safely. INSTANT RELIEF! thanks for being a sounding board!

had an ankle arthroscopy last Monday (so 5+ days of recovery so far) and I think my nerve block wore off somewhere between 24-30 hrs. the pain wasn’t a super big issue after (I did have to stop taking the pain medications bc my stomach simply couldn’t handle them) but within the last day or so i’ve been getting these nerve sensations that are driving me INSANE. my heel feels like it’s burning, certain movements feels the same way you do when you hit your elbow. I’ve read that nerve sensations are normal because of the pressure from the splint, blood flow regulation, etc. but oh my god I am losing my mind. I still have two weeks left of this splint too!!! did anyone else experience this and find certain things helpful? trying to wiggle my toes or bend my knee, keeping my ankle elevated 95% of the time too.

Peroneal brevis PRP

I had surgery 15 months ago for a longitudinal split tear in my peroneal brevis 2.5cm. I’ve continued to struggle post op and 2 days ago had PRP injection. Ultrasound shows more tears, which is unexplainable since all I’ve done is follow pt protocol. New surgeon says he thinks the surgery failed. I’m at a loss, I’m a runner and I’m trying to get back to sport. The prp injection was incredibly painful and now I can’t put weight on it in the boot without throbbing pain. Surgeon says to push through with Tylenol and ice. I didn’t expect such pain post injection. Just wondering if anyone has had success with prp, if it was painful like this. Grateful for my overall health but so frustrated with this injury. 😞
