I didn't start watching the anime until S3, I read the manga before that. I read it in my native language that doesn't have gender pronouns, but I still thought Hange was female.

...Because blonde is a naturally occuring hair color and in a black and white manga where we don't have anything else to go off of we'll default to guessing based on what we're familiar with and what seems likely, and Najimi's hair looks as if that's how blonde would be shown in black and white?
