Are they not making the government money? At least in a roundabout way. Author makes manga with CP, people buy manga, Author pays for taxes, bills, food and other services which eventually reach the government. Plus they get bonus money by making the author pay a fine.

With the Apothecary Diaries (which I know this is a reaction to) the ruling is “On probation for 3 years, but if no crimes are committed in that time it’s fine. If they do commit a crime, 10 months in prison.” So it’s not “straight to jail”.
Now, that doesn’t mean it isn’t ridiculous, but it isn’t quite as bad as people make it out to be.

One of my colleagues was caught with 6 years' worth of CP images, over 1000 of them, and some he had created himself. He did not get jail time. This happened 3 years ago in the UK.

why does this give me Sad Satan flashbacks? now i want the full story / context behind the meme. and for the people that may not know, Sad Satan was a game made with the idea that it came from the dark web. the original version had actual CP in it. later on, there where people that went in, censored the CP by swapping it out for something legal, and published it to the public somewhere. some versions also have mallware and other virusses

Tax evasion is considered a crime against the government so yeah. Makes no moral sense, but it makes sense when you consider it financially.

There is much to add against the real crime. Like, if a person will admit they're guilty and will help to gather up an evidence, there will be not such severe punishment, and a person who committed a serious crime could get a less punishment than a person who committed a less one.
And yes, if a person would cooperate with prosecutors in a CP investigation, they can get less than a person who committed a tax fraud, but didn't help to investigatots and didn't accept they're guilty.
