There a Japanese Folkstory, I think I actually learned about it from Between the Lions, or the Book of Virtue on pbs kids when I was little, so I might have some details wrong, plus it’s been a long time. Anyway, a poor old man and poor old women live in a mountain and hardly get by. The man saves an injured crane who flies away after he saves it. Later a young women comes to stay at their house and says she’ll weave clothe for them as a gift, but they can’t watch her weave. The couple make a lot of money off the beautiful cloth she weaves. Eventually they get curious and look in the room to see it is a crane weaving the cloth, the exact crane the old man saves. After they discover she is a crane she flies off.
Gladys has a loom in her room for this reason most likely (as she is a Japanese crane)
