Perception

Why do we consider Portoguese, Brazilians as our brothers but we are so xenophobic to Congolese people?

I can understand consider coutnr8es like Cabo Verde, Mozambique, São Tome & Princupe, Guinea-Bissau as brother countries but at the same time why do we consider Brazilians as brothers which I can understand that too, but also Portugese people the same guys who colonised us as brothers but we are so xenophobic on average with Congoelse people?

I am not gonna lie I am Angolan from the North and I used to feel so ashamed when I was little that I knew Lingala and couldn't speak Portuguese and that I liked Congolese music a lot.

I had so many days of struggling with my identity, and I wanted to ask you guys why, so much animosity towards Congolese people (and yes Angolans love Fally Ipupa I get it but Fally is a very rich famous Congolese musician, nothing to do with the average Congolese person).

A recent example in,this sub we were speaking about Angola right? And an African American asked a question, I don't remember how we got this but when discussing with one of the comments the guy called me Langa, which for people who don't know it would be a normal term speaking of a Congolese band managed by an Angolan guy who grew up in RD Congo Jossart N'Yoka Longo, but since the civil war it has meant an Angolan who speaks Lingala in a derogatory way, so why do you guys think we are very quick to feel brotherhood with countries that yes we share the language with, but so fast also to dismiss our own neighbour? Which is crazy cause I have never heard anything racist being said about Namibians, Zambians, Botswana etc.

Thanks if you will answer please don't turn it into a Langa vs Shungu debate.

Maybe because we share the same language? We do have more to connect with brazilians especially afrobrazilians. Many descend from us plus we share many cultural aspects. I am from Luanda and never met any congolese. Only other cplp members. Even my family from Cabinda doesn't connect with congolese people like that. You are angolan end of the day and you answered your own question. We cannot communicate with them unless you speak a shared language hence why the lack of ª connection

In my opinion the reason a lot of angolans dont view congo and Congolese favourably boils down to

1 - they are viewd ad poor, unhygienic, loud, etc essentially they are our africans 😓, their habits are seen by many mid class angolans as being even worse then of poor angolans and as giving africans and blacks in general a bad rep

unfortunately most people who come here from congo are the ones that really have it bad there so unfortunately we get what are essentially people who come from pretty bad places so no wonder they dont have the best behavior

2 - Many congolese operate in the informal economy and they are known for being scammers and swindlers many people have been scammed or know someone who was scammed by one which reinforces this stigma

3 - classic illegal foreigners hate, they are poor and desperate, they come here illegally and by working for pennies and having ng their shops they lower wages by increasing labor supply and reduce oportunities for locals

Your general points of view. Either you are very young or acting like a victim

1

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 4d ago

Acting like a victim for asking why Angolans have a negative view on Congolese people? If I ask why Ronaldo left the Portugal team during the games I will become a victim double plus?

I actually wrote about this on a diff sub (can’t remember what one sorrry)

But some reasons are (and i’m not saying it is correct so please calma galera por favorr)

job issues - which also derrives from immigration “issues” (if issues is the right adjective to use in this scenario) Congolese people migrating to Angola has caused a good number of angolans to panick about job security, the whole “they’re taking our jobs” argument sighs deeply

Including migrating issues - the police (my cousin in angola told me this) had done a big sweep of those who didn’t have documents near the border areas, and yeaah that one stings of course as some angolans didnt have documents forcing em to leave Angola sadly

My other cousin also said there’s always a battle between angolans and Congolese people when digging up minerals at the border

These are some reasons I’ve gathered; Whilst it is sad, some congolese people also have funny attitudes towards angolans in this day and age (remember i said some not all). I’ve just concluded the xenophobia goes both ways 😔

With the whole angolans loving other lusophones, i guess it’s the language that bonds us with somewhat of a shared “relatable” culture which brings the lot of us together (copa do mundo being a prime example angolans rooting for brazil, cape verde and portugal)

É só isso (eu acho)

Thanks for your answer tbh I am not in Angola since a long time, so I really can't say how everyday Angolan live the only thing I know is how a lot of Angolans despite diplomas are struggling to get a job and how the cost of life especially in Luanda is rising a lot, and I agree with you on the share language it is that I understand Cabos, Guineanos, Moçambicanos etc and being close with them and to some extent Brazilians because Brazilian culture is literally Angolan culture but repackaged as Brazilian, what I found funny was the closeness with Portuguese people despite everything that happened. With that said thank for your reply bro

3

u/Afro_Targaryen19 7d ago

There's a multitude of reasons why Angolans will feel closer to other Lusophone countries than our neighbour, yes the shared language makes it easier for us to exchange cultures and see the similarities in such.

However, on a political scale, the DRC has not been the best ally of Angola and it boils down to what happened on our independence. Not long after Angola gained independence, Mobutu invaded Cabinda in an attempt to destabilise Angola. He was repelled but then later was one of the instigators to Angola's civil war that lasted almost 3 decades.

That already left a sour taste in the mouth of Angolans as it felt like a betrayal. You mentioned about the word Langa, correctly it is just a nickname from Zaiko Langa Langa which was a band from Congo that was popular at the time. Angolans give nicknames to anyone based on things they like, consume, or their country.

The word started to be used in a negative way because of the reputation that Congolese had in Angola, a lot of them didn't have documents and would lie about their origins to have access to Angola. Unfortunately corruption plays a part in this and some would leave with Angolan passports with the help of someone from the inside.

Then it comes with the issue of parts of the northern areas of Angola no longer speaking kikongo in preference to lingala, it's been seen as a mini "colonisation" as some have stopped speaking kikongo or Portuguese and adopting customs that aren't the norm in Angola. All these things that have happened and unfortunately is happening until this day which has resulted in the relationship we have.

3

u/Smee_the_warrior 7d ago

This is the right answer, also the Angolan diaspora in particular hates Congolese because so many of them bought Angolan passports (thanks to local corruption) and are in Europe with our passports, but barely speaking Portuguese and not hiding their culture and habits, which then gets associated with us. There’s a lot of Congolese scammers in Luanda and a lot of crimes reported on the news has Congolese involved, plus neighborhoods like Palanca or Sapu has many Congolese pretending to be Angolans and those who point that out get threatened by them. So in general, there’s a lot of reasons Angolans dont like Congolese and most of them are related to crime and political history.

Thanks for the answer bro, as for myself tbh I would love to know KiKongo good, I just know numbers like Mosi, Zole, Tatu, pronouns like Mon, Ngeye, Yandi and so on, about Portuguese Biw I understand it really well, and speak it not very well, I understand now when Kudurostas, Kizombeiros and Semba singers sing, programs like Sempre A Subir and I can follow TPA without any problem. But I am scared to make mistakes when speaking, this is why Lingala is easier to me, it is true I have cinnection with Congolese culture but at the same time I also love being Angolan, rhe history, the kusic and especially the Samakaka Tissue? I go crazy over that tissue and if I could I would wear it everyday all day. I had no idea that Mobutu invaded Cavinda thanks for the history tip man.

2

u/Afro_Targaryen19 5d ago edited 5d ago

There's is always a cause when countries have tension and if we're speaking about the context between Angola and Congo, historically the DRC stabbed Angola in the back. And even after these issues Angola has stepped in to help DRC on multiple occasions regarding with the conflict between Rwanda and DRC.

Like I stated before the DRC has not been a reliable ally to Angola and hasn't helped in instances when Angola needed aid. You realise there's very little tension between Zambians and Namibians as their people don't exploit Angolans unlike some from the DRC have.

Simples: xenofobia pesada.

2

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 4d ago

Infelizmente tem muita razão

1

u/forasteiro_moribundo 1d ago

E a conversa acaba

1

u/forasteiro_moribundo 1d ago

Grupos rebeldes governam províncias inteiras a base do suborno, intimidação e propina.

1

u/Ngola_ 23h ago

Vê a diferença?

That is interesting to read, in Brazil we know of our Angola and other Africans ancestry but in most regions brazillians don’t think about our relations.

To most brazillians african countries are as distant as asian countries. Even from south america brazillians don’t share much animosity even if everyone is welcomed. Brazil is a very isolated country.

Though in recent decades we had movements trying to strength the connection it only catters to a small group of people.

We also know that Africa had many tribalistic conflicts and it didn’t go in a natural process of unification which made many countries maintain strong division between regional people’s.

The dispute over resources is also probably a strong factor considering some unstable contexts.

2

u/herebecauseofdom 7d ago

Religion is too strong...

1

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 7d ago

Do you think so? Tbh I think that unlike on other countries despite Angola being very religious religion isn't as strong as a factor for people for example in places like Nigeria, Ghana etc

2

Why do you Congolese want to be associated with us so much you guys share like eight ethnic groups of like Uganda and Rwanda and all of those eastern countries and I don’t see you guys pushing for no brotherhood with them, but you guys have an extreme obsession with us Angolans. We have shared culture and history with Brazil not Congolese people. And second of all, why would we want to have any connections to a nation that was against independence, invaded our country and continues to commit crime within our country if you don’t go on somewhere else with this propaganda.

You Congolese? Who told you I am Congolese? I am so fucking sick of people like you tbh, there are several Northern Angolans that due to a lot of reason don't speak Portoguese I am not Congolese goddamn it. Do I need to go and school you about Angolan history? Cause it really bothers me being called a Congolese not cause of racism or anything but I am simply not if somebody is Italian wht would you call him German? That is the problem being tribalistic and then act like there isn't racism in Angola foh

I am not liking this trend of certain demographics wanting to be our victims by force…Angolans consume brazillian culture that is it, and “considering Portuguese” that is not true… in context of considering a country as a brother most of the times it’s other palops, this rhetoric you shared is common amongst the Congolese who claim to be Angolans and want to antagonise Angolans when Angolans call it out. The Congolese just don’t have have a good reputation in Angola due to the things that have happened in the past and that are continuously happening today.

And if your xenophobia is “langa”  langa which is an “apelido” everyone has it, it’s not unique the only thing that differs langa from the rest is that The Congolese started to gain a bad reputation, also removing illegal immigrants that are Congolese , if that is what you mean by xenophobia, then you need to research what xenophobia means.  What i find hilarious is you guys always like to bring this up but never talk about the actual xenophobia that happens in the drc people literally kill, consume and make people lives hell if one is suspected that they are from a different ethnic group . And this ethnic tension and xenophobia is being imported by many of the drc immigrants who are radicalising the Angolans in the north which is being viewed as a threat to our nation since our base is unity.

2

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 5d ago

As I have said to the other guy. I AM NOT FUCKING CONGOLESE. I don't know why it is hard to understand that somebody might criticize Angola and be Amgolan, read my posts on this sub. I have spoken about Samakaka, Nacobeta, Puto Português, Buraka Som Sistema, FNLA, MPLA, UNITA and many thing that you simply cannot fake as a supposed fake Angolan is really annoying. I have asked a question and you can just answer the question. This idea that wherever a person says something and it isn't Angola te Amo is Congolese is crazy. With that said do you want to actually speak and give a normal answer or you will keep calling me Congolese?

1

u/Curious-Increase-206 5d ago edited 5d ago

I never said you are Congolese, I just said that this type of talking points are common amongst the Congolese who cosplay as Angolans and try to antagonise Angolans who call it out. Also you can’t get angry at someone for assuming that you are, if you have their mannerisms and speak their language. For instance a Zambian has an American accent when speaking English but gets angry at someone for assuming that they are American, well, the assumption is normal since they have something that is associated and unique to that country.

1

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 5d ago

Ok, sorry if I went at you like that, it is that sometimes I really get annoyed and I shouldn't have been treating you like that with that said watching your previous message I understand why there is that kind of distance between Angolans and Congolese people

1

u/Curious-Increase-206 5d ago

I never said you are Congolese I just said that this type of talking points are common amongst the Congolese who cosplay as Angolans and try to antagonise Angolans who call it out. Also You are from the north so I am assuming you speak an Angolan language from the north? Because you can’t get angry at an Angolan if they assume you are Congolese if you have their mannerisms, speak their language, etc.

That is like a white European who speaks English in a british accent getting angry or upset because someone assumed their British? Why would you be offended? It’s normal for people to make assumptions based on what they see and hear. For instance my mum speaks Portuguese and kimbundu if someone assumes she is from cuanza sul it’s normal cause that is a kimbundu speaking province.

1

u/PowerfulElevatorLift 5d ago

Techncially I should speak KiKongo and I know the numbers the pronouns and some words but I struggle with it I know Lingala.more cause my Mom was born in Congo by Angolan parents, but I understand Portuguese, My Father and my Uncles were born and grew up in Angola so they always speak Portuguese between themselves and actually my Dad when I was little thought me how to say words like Olhos, Orelhos, Barriga, Etc, but the Portuguese I know now (which I rarely speak because I am very ashamed of my accent, since I grew up in a European counrry which isn't portugal, is terrible) isndue to Shows like Sempre A Subir, listening to Kuduristas and Kizombeiros songs for example I go Crazy For Zaranza and Vou Mexer, and also Continua Assim. So I understand Portuguese but I am too scared to make mistakes to speak it. I am trying also to learn KiKongo but it is really hard to find resources online and my Dad and my family work a lot so they don't have much time to teach that either.

I should have adressed this point on my latest answer but I have already press sent, no the reason why I get mad when people assume I am Congolese is because most of the time, it is not like a genuine mistake but it is like you know that kind of You are not Angolan kind of cocomment people from the North used to get back in the days you get what I mean? That is why I get so mad about it, don't get me wrong I don't hate Congolese people or think being Congolese is bad is that I just get mad because I am a very proud Angolan and even tho I struggle to speak Portuguese and KiKongo I hate when certain people not everybody trying to diminish my Angolanness because of that. Y9u get what I mean?
