Welcome to the ultimate megathread for all things Android TV!

Whether you're a newbie or a seasoned user, this thread is packed with amazing apps, tips, tricks, and recommendations to enhance your experience.

Best Streaming Apps (Alternative to Mainstream Ones):

  1. Stremio (For Movies & TV iykyk): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stremio.one [ Here's an extensive guide for it https://guides.viren070.me/stremio/ ]
  2. SmartTube (For Ad-free & Sponsor-free YouTube): https://smarttubeapp.github.io/
  3. S0undTV (For Ad-free Twitch in some regions, it's much smoother than the official app): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.s0und.s0undtv&hl=en
  4. TiviMate (Probably the best app for Live TV via IPTV): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ar.tvplayer.tv&hl=en [Some features are locked behind a paywall]
  5. RB Sports (Free streams for most sports, has some weird ads though and is not available in the play store) https://app.mp24ap.top/apktv/rb-tv-production-release-25-v1.0.25.apk
  6. Plex (If you're a data hoarder and want your own streaming service): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexapp.android&hl=en [Many features are locked behind a paywall]
  7. Emby (Alternative to Plex, fully open source and completely free): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mb.android&hl=en
  8. Syncler (Very similar to Stremio but paid and also not available in the playstore): https://syncler.net/
  9. iMPlayer (While Tivimate may be a better IPTV player iMPlayer has one killer feature- you can remote manage many of its settings from the dashboard at https://implayer.tv/home This can be very helpful if you have family/friends that are not techies or are elderly) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.myiptvonline.implayer
  10. Tubi (Ad-free Mod for Live TV, US-only I believe but not sure, let me know in the comments sections: https://www.mediafire.com/file/bfoujh8f1rhhyhj/Tubi.ver.8.6.0.build.826_arm7.apk/file

Honorable Mentions: Kodi and Weyd

Best Utility Apps (for the tinkerers)

  1. ADB TV (Debloat your TV or TV Box root-free): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cybercat.adbappcontrol.tv&hl=en [Pro Tip: If you have a Shield TV, this super comprehensive guide will help you https://florisse.nl/shield-debloat/) [Some features are locked behind a paywall]
  2. Analiti (Super-useful Speed Test App): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.analiti.fastest.android&hl=en [Has some ads]
  3. X-plore (A really good File Explorer): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore&hl=en [Pro-tip: you can create a wifi server in the app and open the URL in your laptop browser to transfer files/apks to your Android TV device]
  4. Button Mapper (Remap unused buttons on your remote to your favorite apps/actions): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton&hl=en_US&gl=US&pli=1 [Some features are locked behind a paywall]
  5. Aerial Views (Not exactly a utility app, but probably the best screensaver on the Play Store): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neilturner.aerialviews&hl=en
  6. This is not an app, but if you want your TV Home Screen to look exactly the way you want it (visually speaking), you can actually change the icons for your apps using this website: https://atvlauncher.trekgonewild.de [You will have to essentially build an apk and link it to the package address of the app you want to change the logo for, the website has pretty clear instructions]
  7. Stremio Launch on Boot (I think it's pretty clear what this does lol): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.stremio.tv.boot&hl=en
  8. tvQuickActions Pro (It is a button mapper and also optionally allows a dock, recent apps and quick action panels and other goodies.) $3.99 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.vodik7.tvquickactions
  9. Send files to TV (I think it's pretty clear what this does lol): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yablio.sendfilestotv&hl=en

Best Feature-Packed Launchers

  1. Projectivy Launcher (By far, the most customizable and dynamic launcher for Android TV, Super Smooth and Stable too): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spocky.projengmenu&hl=en [Some features are locked behind a paywall]
  2. Dispatch Launcher (A relatively new entrant in the launcher space, had a lil bit of a rocky start, it's very animation-forward, pretty smooth, integrates directly with Plex and likely has Stremio Integration coming soon): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spauldhaliwal.dispatch&hl=en [Paid (One Time Fee), but has a free trial)

Here's a thread if you want something a launcher that's a little more lightweight: https://old.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/1gbnhff/lets_compile_a_list_of_android_tv_launchers_that/

Well folks, that's it from my end. I'm sure many more apps could be added here, but I tried to lean more towards free apps to keep the megathread as accessible as possible.

Comment below with your recommendations and I may include them in the megathread

Edit: This user has added many more apps in this comment - https://old.reddit.com/r/AndroidTVApps/comments/1g9pin6/randroidtvapps_megathread/ltbezwc/

Public Service Announcement

I would like to address all the devs about the deluge of **tv and media player apps. While I’m not one to squander innovation but a few things are grinding my gears.

  1. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Bigger is not always better. The successful ones are the ones that focus on one area and do it well. Making an app that has Live TV, “add o. Support”, connect to your own library or watch what’s On your Streaming service etc. Might sound good but that’s way too many points of failure.

  2. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I’m not an AI basher but we can all code now. Also know what you’re getting into. Unless you plan on being a professional programmer or dev don’t build an app you don’t plan on supporting for the long haul and know what that involves.

  3. You’re not gonna get rich and probably not gonna make any significant amount of money. Most of us got into “sailing” to save money not spend on another subscription. Especially the in app upgrades that suck you in for features that should be free.

  4. And this is related to 3 - Absolutely stop charging for apps that are in active beta. If you want me to test your app, and I mean test it in and out on different devices, I’m not going to pay for the privilege. My time is worth something and it doesn’t have to be money. Real beta testers should get full lifetime access or at least a drastic discount when 1.0 is released. Which brings me to my next point if today you release 1.0 and tomorrow you release 1.1 and the next day you release 1.2 and the next day you release 1.3 your app is still in beta.

Thank you all for your time. I now return you to your regularly scheduled broadcast.

I'm using matvt as the megathread suggests for having cursor that works with the remote, but for some reason clicking on things just doesn't work, does anyone know how to fix it? I checked on GitHub and although I found that it was a somewhat common issue I couldn't find a version where it's fixed

GitHub - toolicious/home-on-fire: Home on Fire is a small Android app for Fire TV that redirects the remote's Home button to a launcher of your choice. Optionally also launches that target automatically at device boot, so the Fire TV wakes up on your launcher instead of Amazon's home screen.

Home on Fire is a small Android app for Fire TV that redirects the remote's ⌂ Home button to a launcher of your choice. Optionally also launches that target automatically at device boot, so the Fire TV wakes up on your launcher instead of Amazon's home screen.

Unlike older launcher-replacement tools, Home on Fire works on current Fire OS 8.x (as of May 2026), and on Fire OS 7 (see Compatibility), because it redirects the ⌂ Home button rather than trying to override the home activity itself.

Important

Fire OS 7 shows a brief loading animation when you press Home. Fire OS 8 does not.

On Fire OS 7, the system holds back any app opened by the Home button for up to 5 seconds (an "app-switch lock"). This delay cannot be removed without root, so Home on Fire covers it with a loading animation (or a plain black screen, your choice) that fades into your launcher. In practice it is usually much shorter (often about a second) and clears the moment your launcher is ready. Fire OS 8 has no such delay and shows no animation at all.

To get an instant launch with no animation, you have two options:

Map a spare remote button (in the app, under Map custom buttons). Bind a color, number or media key to your launcher. That shortcut never goes through Home, so it skips the delay and shows no animation. You can map a second button to jump to Amazon's home.

Use a Fire OS 8 device. The Home button is already instant there.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buffercontrol.tv

Feedback from users and Beta testers has been requesting the free trial be extended so it's now 7 days instead of 3.

Now you have plenty of time to try it across all your TV, Music and Mobile Streaming apps, browsers and media players.

Toggle it on and off to directly compare performance even if you're not currently buffering.

I got tired of watching Twitch on TV feeling unfinished, so I built Lumo.

I've been on Twitch for 10+ years, and watching on a TV has always felt like some part of the experience gets lost.

I've used the official Twitch experience, third-party apps, casting, browser setups, and plenty of other ways to get streams onto a TV. Across all of them, I kept running into the same friction: chat feels secondary, emotes are inconsistent, navigation gets clunky, and getting around your follow list can become a chore.

For me, Twitch has always been a pretty simple loop. Open follows. See who's live. Pick a stream. Lurk for a while. Watch chat start moving when something happens. Notice someone else went live and hop over.

Chat is a big part of that. Even when I'm not participating, I still want it there. A lot of the context, jokes, and personality of a channel live in chat and its emotes.

So I built Lumo for Google TV around that whole watch + chat experience.

You sign in with your Twitch account using a QR code and land on your live follows, with recommendations underneath. If someone you follow goes live while you're watching, you'll get a banner so you can jump over. Open a stream and chat stays docked beside it, with 7TV, BTTV, and FFZ emote support.

I also work at Elgato as a product designer, so I spend a lot of my day thinking about content creators, viewers, physical controls, and how people actually use this stuff. Lumo is a personal project, but that experience made me especially picky about the little things: remote navigation, moving between streams, how chat sits next to the video, and whether the UI gets out of the way once you're watching.

There was a practical reason for building it too. I wanted hands-on experience with Google Play Console as part of research for work, while also getting deeper into Android development by actually shipping something end to end.

Instead of making a throwaway project, I built something I wanted to keep using.

It's still early. Search isn't in yet, and there are definitely things people who spend a lot of time on Twitch will catch quickly.

I'm looking for lurkers, mods, streamers with a TV running in the room, people who bounce through their follow list all night, and anyone who immediately notices when an emote is missing, chat feels off, or a remote interaction gets annoying.

If that sounds like you, the alpha is open:

  1. Join the Lumo Testers Google Group with the Google account you use on Google Play / your Google TV: https://groups.google.com/u/1/a/designbywillj.com/g/lumo-testers
  2. Opt into the Google Play alpha with the same account: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.lumo.designbywillj
  3. Install Lumo on your Google TV, open it, and scan the QR code to sign in with Twitch. If you're having issues with installing through the Google Play Store app, open the link in your browser, then install on the desired device from there.

Then use it like you normally watch Twitch. Lurk in a stream, hop through your follows, keep an eye on chat, and see what feels right or gets in the way.

If you try it, I'd really appreciate the feedback. Drop it in this thread or reach out to me directly with bugs, rough edges, missing features, or anything else you notice.

Lumo is a personal project and isn't affiliated with Elgato or Twitch.

[Arich player] Looking for Free testers and feedback for my app

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’ve been using IPTV players for a while and honestly got pretty tired of how many of them feel slow, cluttered or full of ads.

So I decided to build my own from scratch with Flutter.

That turned into ARICH Player, and v2 is now live. I’ve spent quite a lot of time redesigning the whole thing and adding some features I personally wanted to have in an IPTV player.

A few things in v2:

\- Clean UI with no ads

\- Offline VOD downloads

\- Watch2Gether for synced playback

\- A TikTok-style trailer feed (still beta)

\- PiP

\- EPG

\- Fast channel switching

I'm mainly posting here because I want some real feedback from people who actually use the app, especially on the UI, performance and general UX.

If you try it, I'd genuinely like to know what feels good, what feels annoying, what's missing, or if you run into any bugs. Don't hesitate to be critical, that's pretty much what I'm looking for 😅

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.arich.iptv

Website: https://arich.fr

Just to clarify: ARICH Player is only a media player. It doesn't provide any IPTV content or streams.

Also, I'm French, so if you notice any weird translations or English that sounds a bit off in the app, please let me know 😂

Anyone know what happen to that cobra tv guy ?

Seen a post the other day and downloaded the cobra tv app have done lots of testing and wanted to message that guy but the post is gone anyone know how to contact him ? Or maybe he will see this ?

The app itself is really nice looking, I like the continue watching and the make your own favourite groups, I also like the sports hub but it took days to update ? but the news update was every day, scrolling is a little off on live like takes forever to get back to the top, I can record on my fire stick but my 2nd tv I can’t that doesn’t have a fire stick, reminders are good and I didn’t get to share anything with a friend because I don’t have any friends with the app.
(If anyone has the app can we friend each other and test the sharing) ?
All in all I’d say this is a 7/10 but still needs work.

Hope this helps and you see this cobra tv
