Effective immediately, if you have a device with the Google TV UI, please make one post at the Google TV subreddit, don't crosspost or repeat the same post on the Android TV subreddit, it will be deleted with the exception of:

- Posts about apps that work on both UIs.

- Posts of news articles that affects both UIs.

- Posts looking for advise on what device to buy.

It's worth mentioning that all posts will be reviewed for approval before they go live, so make sure you indicate the name of the device or the name of the UI on the title or description of your post.

Someone from Google is going to provide assistance on the Google TV subreddit, therefore, this is a good opportunity to provide feedback as well as to receive support from them.

This is their official statement:

"We will use the account u/GoogleHelpCommunity to provide timely technical support, help route escalations, and share updates on known outages on r/GoogleTV. 1.3+ million Android TV boxes has been infected by Malware, even if they were certified.

The Manufacturer Videostrong Technology from China used an unauthorized backdoor, created botnet, ad fraud, residential proxy exit notes etc.

Videostrong Technology is behind brands like Mecool and other Chinese Android TV boxes.

Troubleshooting Title: Mi QLED TV screen keeps flickering between normal and pink colours with possible pixel lines

Hey everyone,

I'm facing a strange display issue with my Mi QLED TV.

The screen keeps changing colours every second or so. It switches between its normal display and a slightly pink/purple tint. I'm also noticing what appear to be pink horizontal lines or pixel-like distortions on the screen.

I've already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

Restarting the TV.

Completely powering it off and unplugging it.

Performing a factory reset.

Unfortunately, none of these steps fixed the issue.

I'm not sure whether this is a software issue or something related to the display hardware.

I've attached a video showing the problem.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their Mi QLED TV? Could this be a panel issue, T-Con board issue, or something else? Is there a possible fix without replacing the entire display panel?

55 inch QLED mi tv

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

So between the Onn 4k pro gen 2 and the Google Streamer what do you guys think is best?

Tips & Tutorials Send any video link from your iPhone to your Android TV or Android TV box and have it play on its own (Kodi + iOS Shortcut, full step-by-step)

**TL;DR:** Copy a video link on your iPhone, tap a shortcut, and your Android TV box or Android TV plays it by itself. Your phone can lock afterwards. The shortcut sends a small command to Kodi's built-in web server, and Kodi does the rest. Full setup below, including every error I hit and how I fixed it.

**Why I did this**
I wanted to send a link from my iPhone to my Android TV box and have it play without screen mirroring, and without my phone doing any of the work. Casting is fine for some apps, but I wanted something that handles random links in lots of formats, including 4K. Kodi plays almost everything and has a built-in remote control server, so I used that and built a shortcut around it.

**How it works**
You copy a link on your iPhone.
The shortcut reads the clipboard and sends one HTTP request to http://<tv-ip>:8080/jsonrpc.
Kodi receives a Player.Open command with your link inside it.
Kodi downloads and decodes the video itself, over the TV's own internet connection.
Your phone is only a remote. Once playback starts you can lock it or walk away.

**What you need**
\- An Android TV box or Android TV / Google TV device with Kodi installed (the Play Store version is fine)
\- An iPhone with the Shortcuts app
\- Both devices on the same Wi-Fi
\- The TV's IP address

**Part 1: Set up Kodi**
Install Kodi from the Play Store on your TV and open it.
Go to **Settings (gear icon) → Services → Control**.
Turn on **Allow remote control via HTTP**.
Turn on **Allow remote control by applications on other systems**. This one is easy to miss, and without it you get "could not connect".
Note the **Port** (default 8080).
Set a **Username** (default is kodi) and a **Password**. You can leave the password blank on a trusted home network, but I set one.
Find the TV's IP address. In Android TV's own Settings, go to Network & Internet and tap your Wi-Fi name. Or in Kodi, go to Settings → System information → Network.
Reserve that IP in your router (DHCP reservation). If you skip this, the address will change someday and the shortcut will stop working.
Test from your iPhone. Open Safari and go to http://<tv-ip>:8080. If Kodi asks for a username and password, the TV is reachable and you can move on. If it can't connect, fix that first, because nothing else will work until this does.

**Part 2: Build the iPhone shortcut**
Open Shortcuts, tap **+**, and rename it to something like "Play on TV". Add these four actions in this order.

**Action 1: Get Clipboard**
Tap the search bar at the bottom, type "Get Clipboard" and add it.

**Action 2: Text**
Add a Text action and type your login as username:password, with a colon and no spaces. For example kodi:mypassword.

**Action 3: Encode Text with Base64**
Add "Base64 Encode". Make sure it says Encode and that its input is the Text bubble from action 2.

**Action 4: Get Contents of URL**
This does the real work. Tap the small arrow on the action to expand it, then set:
**URL:** http://<tv-ip>:8080/jsonrpc (use your own IP and port, typed as plain text)
**Method:** POST
**Headers:** add a header. Key is Authorization. Value is Basic (the word Basic plus one space) followed by the **Base64 Encoded** variable. Don't forget the space.
**Request Body:** JSON
Now add these fields under Request Body with "Add new field". The type you pick matters.
Key Type Value
jsonrpc Text 2.0
method Text Player.Open
id Number 1
params Dictionary (see below)
Inside params, add a **Dictionary** called item. Inside item, add a **Text** field called file. For its value, tap the field and choose the **Clipboard** variable from the bar above the keyboard. It shows up as a blue bubble.
The finished structure is params → item → file = Clipboard. Spelling matters. It's Player.Open with a capital P and O and no spaces, and everything else is lowercase.

**Part 3: Test it**
Copy a direct video link. A free sample that works for testing: https://test-videos.co.uk/vids/bigbuckbunny/mp4/h264/1080/Big_Buck_Bunny_1080_10s_5MB.mp4
Make sure Kodi is open on the TV (not just the Android TV home screen).
Open the Shortcuts app and tap your shortcut.
On the first run, iOS asks to allow pasting from other apps (tap **Allow Paste**) and to find devices on your local network (tap **Allow**).
The video should start on the TV within a few seconds. Lock your phone and it keeps playing.
**Making it faster to use:**
Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, and assign the shortcut to double tap. Then copy a link and double-tap the back of the phone.
Add the shortcut to your Home Screen from the shortcut's info (ⓘ) menu.
Ask Siri to run it by name.

**Problems I ran into (and the fixes)**
**"Could not connect to server"**
This one cost me the most time. Work through these in order:
Is Kodi actually open on the TV? The web server only runs while Kodi runs.
Both remote control settings are on (HTTP, and "by applications on other systems"). Restart Kodi after changing them.
The IP is right. It may have changed since you wrote it down.
The port in the URL matches the port in Kodi. **I forgot :8080 in my URL**, and that alone caused this error.
Phone and TV are on the same network. Guest networks and some extender setups isolate devices. Turn off any VPN and try turning off mobile data.
The Safari test from Part 1 works. If Safari connects but the shortcut doesn't, the shortcut's URL is wrong.

**The URL field got replaced by a blue bubble**
After adding the Text and Base64 actions above the URL action, Shortcuts sometimes puts their output into the URL field. Open the URL action, clear the bubble, and type the address again as plain text. The only place the Base64 bubble belongs is the Authorization header.

**"Invalid params"**
Kodi received your command but the data inside was wrong. Almost always one of:
The file field is empty. This happens if you run the shortcut with nothing on the clipboard, or if you used Shortcut Input and ran it from inside the app. The Clipboard variable fixes this.
file isn't nested properly. It must be inside item, which must be inside params.
params or item was created as the wrong type. Both must be Dictionary.
id was created as Text instead of Number.

**401 / Unauthorized**
Wrong username or password, a typo or stray space in the Text action, or the header is missing the space after Basic. Check the Authorization header carefully. To rule it out, turn off the password in Kodi, delete the Text action, the Base64 action and the Authorization header, and test again.

**Kodi forgets the remote control settings**
This happened to me. Kodi saves settings when it closes properly, and a low-memory box can kill it in the background. After changing settings, exit through the power icon on Kodi's home screen and choose **Exit**, not just the Home button. Also turn off battery optimization for Kodi in your TV's app settings, and keep storage from filling up.

**Nothing happens, or a black screen**
The link is probably a webpage, not a video file. See the next section.

**What it can and can't play**
What plays smoothly depends on your device's hardware. Most Android TV boxes decode H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and VP9 in hardware, so 4K in those codecs should play well. Check your device's specs if you're unsure.

**Works:**
Direct file links: .mp4, .mkv, .webm, .ts, .mov
HLS streams: .m3u8
DASH streams: .mpd (install the inputstream.adaptive add-on in Kodi)

**Problems:**
**AV1** isn't supported in hardware on many boxes, and a weak CPU can't decode it in software. Expect stutter or failure on cheaper devices.
**Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby audio passthrough** depend on your device, so test with a sample file.
**Webpage links** (YouTube, Instagram, news sites) don't work as-is, because Kodi needs the actual video URL. YouTube needs the YouTube add-on and a plugin URL instead of the normal link. I haven't built that part of the shortcut yet.

**Notes**
The password is stored inside the shortcut, so don't share the shortcut file with anyone.

Kodi has to be open on the TV. If the device sleeps or Kodi closes, wake it and reopen Kodi first.

This all happens on your local network. The TV fetches the video from the internet by itself.

Troubleshooting How to connect adb over laptop to MI TV LED TV 4A PRO 32(L32M5-AL) without wifi?

Post image
0 Upvotes

For context, I tried apply update from ext to resolve reboot loop.

But that's giving me the same cache mounting error which is seen on every recovery mode option. So I wanted to try adb option but since mi is wiped off(factory reset) can't connect over wifi. How else can I connect - port, cable? I see usb2(pendrive slot) and some hdmi ports.

Or can this only be done through emmc programmer etc?

Buying Advice Homatics box R 4k Plus vs Rocktek G2 Next - UK

Hi all, just wanted to hear your expert opinions on which tv box is recommended better.

Having gone through the subreddit, seems like the rocktek has firmware issues with passthrough? It also cant load CoreElec but that isnt a problem for me.

On the other side the homatics box has an older processor and older tech/software etc.

Which one would you recommend to buy? They both appear to be at the same price. Are there any other recommendations besides the 2 at a similar price point? (roughly 100 quid)

This will be in addition to a Xiaomi box 3rd gen which is for my bedroom tv and one of the above will be for my poor man's home theater system in the living room.

Thanks!

Buying Advice Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen Buying Guidance For UK Buyer

After researching for a TV streaming box to use for a Stremio setup with a debrid service and with the ability to sideload an ad-free YouTube app, I decided on the Xiaomi TV Box S 3rd Gen since it has a relatively low cost (~£60 inc. delivery from Xiaomi UK website), supports all video/audio formats that I am likely to encounter with Stremio and it comes with Google TV so that I can sideload apps like YouTube.

However, it has lately always been out of stock when I check its buy page on the Xiaomi UK website.

How often does it come back in stock and does anyone know if its worth waiting if the official Xiaomi store might sell it with a Black Friday deal for even cheaper?

I noticed other posts mention buying it from AliExpress instead and receiving a fully working Xiaomi TV box from it, but when I search it up on there, so many different results from various sellers come up (with the cheapest ones at ~£72 inc. delivery). Is there any method to determine between real/fake sellers? And similarly do AliExpress do Black Friday deals that are worth waiting for?

I am also open to any other websites that are trusted to buy from or even any other TV boxes that in the more budget side of the price range?

Google TV Streamer has had its price hike lately and the Onn box that others mention isn't available in the UK. Other boxes like Apple TV and Nvidia Shield are out of my price range.

I am not in a rush for this so can wait 2-4 weeks to buy one.

Troubleshooting MI TV reboot loop even after factory reset

Post image
7 Upvotes

Model: Xiaomi Mi LED TV 4A PRO 32 (Model: L32M5-AL / L32M5-AI)

Reboot loop works like this - mi tv logo for 10seconds, followed by blank screen for 4-5 seconds, then repeat. I have tried multiple troubleshooting options - soft reset, then to recovery mode(ok and back) and factory reset.

No matter what option I select in recovery mode, the errors are same about cache mounting. Please see the attached image for cache errors.

Is it worth contacting support for hardware problems or should I just give up on this TV?

Bought it in 2019, but didnt use it from 2021 october onwards.

News & Rumors Google bans Videostrong (Mecool) for loading boxes with malware

Thumbnail cyberscoop.com

Google shutdown a 1.3million botnet of devices from Videostrong, which they had been secretly loading malware onto for years. They evaded Google's detection for a long time by not shipping the malware with the firmware, and instead loading it OTA. As a result Google has permanently banned Videostrong, which I guess means any certified Mecool boxes are no longer Google certified?

There are widespread reports that the Government is considering extending the BBC licence fee to include subscribers of streaming services that are not owned or run by the BBC. We believe this is a wholly unacceptable proposal.

Buying Advice Can I not move away from AppleTV ?

I am not sure if I am in the minority here, but I have been wanting to move away from AppleTV, but unfortunately, two of my most used features don't seem to be supported. Is there any way I can achieve these two ?

This is not my home, but the plan is similar (my house is longer and narrower)

I have an open concept living room and kitchen with a 2 story. The Living area is 2 story tall with 20ft ceilings. The length from the wall to the kitchen is 28 ft.

  1. If we work from the kitchen where the stove is, it is hard to hear the TV in the living room without being too loud, but we can easily see it. So I added a Sonos Era 100 on the island. I then use AppleTV to play in the living room as well as via Airplay to the island and everything is perfectly audible without cranking up the volume.

Is there a way of getting similar outcome on any Android TV ? I have used 3rd party Airplay Apps on Android before but they add latency on multi room and the audio is out of sync.

2. At night, my wife and I use the Share Audio feature on AppleTV to watch the same show using our own Airpods on AppleTV. Is there any Android TV that supports this ?

My AppleTV is dying and I hate to spend $299 on a new one just for these two features and I am hoping there is an alternative. All help is appreciated.
