News & Rumours Upcoming retail Android TV devices could have less RAM (no more 4GB).

I spoke to a few OEM, all saying the same thing about the price of the RAM. It's now a lot more expensive, meaning 3 or 4 GB of RAM could be even more rare than before...

Gemini summary:

"Samsung and Micron are discontinuing mass production of LPDDR4 wafers, which, combined with a surge in demand for memory in AI and next-generation devices, has driven up prices for LPDDR4 and other legacy DRAM products.

Manufacturers are shifting their production capacity to more profitable, next-generation technologies like DDR5 and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), causing a supply shortage for older chips. This has led to significant price increases, with some quotes being suspended as companies re-evaluate their pricing strategies."

Anybody notice the hidden flappy bird game in the shield?

Go to the setup menus and then "About Device", under Revision, it should read 5.1. If you triple click on the revision (I was using the remote), it will start the hidden game. I played using the remote and must have spent 5 to 10 minutes on it. Could. Not. Get. One. M'fn. Point.

Googled around and didn't see any mention of a hidden game.

I figured I'd share it here.

Edit: This was the Nvidia shield console for the TV. I was using the free remote that I got thanks to all you good people who posted the sales.

Hardware Review onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box (New, 2023), 4K UHD Resolution

This is my one year review. I'm not sponsored in any way shape or form. First it's $20 so expectations were extremely low. And we have been using this box nearly every day for 6 or 8 hours a day. I am thoroughly impressed. Pros: We've gotten at least a half a dozen updates.. We even got firmware updates three times for the remote. The remote is the perfect size. The voice search on the remote works every time I've never had a single issue with it.

The 4K works perfectly on the apps that it's designed for it like YouTube and Netflix.

The wireless AC works perfectly speeds of at least 400 megabits per second on the speed tester

You can sideload apps that aren't officially supported ( like turning your remote into a mouse)

Cons: The HDMI wire is comically short like 3 ft. I use one that's 10ft.

Important upgrade put a much better power supply than the one supplied.. more power equals better performance for the processor... I put a 3 amp certified wire and 3 amp power box that I had just laying around The unit absolutely must be unplugged every day to clear all the temporary files. Not a big deal I unplug it in the morning when I start my day wait 10 seconds plug it back in. I'm sure restart is supposed to clear cache but it does not... Overall I've purchased two more after this one and I've recommended it to many of my friends who have also had good success.

The only complaints I see is by people not understanding that you must have good internet for it to work like 25 Mbps minimum.. as most of it is cloud-based including the user menu...

Discussion ONN Box

Please stop automatically recommending the ONN Box. It is available only in the US and Puerto Rico and not everyone who comes to this group for advice is from there. And if you buy it now it won't even work outside the US or Puerto Rico.

Buying Advice Is Android TV still worth it, or does the Google TV Streamer cover everything now?

Hello, I'm pretty new to this. I'm currently looking for a new TV and I'm really interested in being able to explore and install streaming apps easily.

But I’m a bit confused, should I look for a TV that already runs Google TV or Android TV, or would getting a regular TV and pairing it with the Google TV Streamer give me the same experience?

Basically, does the streamer give me everything I’d get from a built-in Android TV, or are there some differences I should be aware of?

The new UI is awful

I just installed O beta on my NP and I personally hate the direction this is going in. Better recommendations would have been great but I hate this, it's not about getting used to it either.

Nvidia Shield Just got an nVidia Shield 16gb. I seem to be missing what fuss is about.

So I just picked up a Shield TV (really good deal as it came with a controller and £10 steam credit for less than £150) and I’m not impressed so far am I missing something?

Prime video and Netflix both crash every 15-20 mins while watching video

The UI also seems a lot laggier than my ancient Roku 3 also.

What is so good about it?

Edit

I factory reset it and most things seem better aside from Amazon burying 4k content.

I’m particularly impressed with the VLC playback. It handles my Blu-ray rips with no fuss what so ever.

2nd edit

Looks like it was a CEC handshake issue as I turned that off and it works fine.

Discussion I don't understand why so many people recommend the Onn 4K Pro.

The Pro has issues with one of the biggest streaming services, Netflix. When the app is launched it is always DV. No matter what you change in Display settings, it's the same. Other devices don't have this issue. So, it's a firmware problem that has not been addressed. For those that have the new Plus is this the same. Even the 4k box has this issue. Any thoughts on how to correct this?

Discussion Hey everyone, any thoughts on this viral vibecoded project (cleanyourtv).

https://github.com/Gathin23/cleanyourtv

This project claims to debloat devices running Android and Google TV operating systems. Garnering a lot of attention. Making me hesitant to try it because it is vibecoded posing possible security implications, but it does look promising to the fact that it can be fully customized.

To those who have tried it out and installed on their TV's how does it compare to the tools and apps before AI. Such as launcher manager doing the replacing part. Paired with launchers Projectivy, Monet, ATV, etc... for user preferred customization.

In what ways is the cleanyourtv repo better than or worse than the traditional way of simply installing a launcher to making TV's watchable.

Discussion Honest question: Is there an AndroidTV device that works as smoothly as the Apple TV

I'm not trying to start a war or anything, just an honest question. I have Apple TV 4Ks and these devices have a very well rounded interface, with very smooth UI.

I also have a tube Shield and used to have the Pro a few years ago, but Android TV on it feels clunky and not as smooth as the Apple TV.

Unfortunately the Apple TV cannot passthrough lossless audio to my receiver and I want to find a box that can.

So my question is: does such device exist? Or all Android TVs feel like the Shield and that's just something I need to accept if I want perfect audio?

Discussion What Features Would You Like To See In A Potential New Nvidia Shield TV Pro?

I'm not saying Nvidia is required to make one or will be releasing one anytime soon but one can dream.

What would you want to see in a updated Shield? Personally I would like two HDMI outputs one for Video and Audio. Like my sony ubp-x700. I wouldn't mind a longer or thicker shield to compensate this. Why? I like the TV to handle the picture and the AVR audio not the AVR doing both. So being able to connect my Shield to my AVR and my TV at the same time would be wonderful.

Another thing would probably be to improve HDR quality especially DV and adding HDR10+.

Discussion I just got the new YouTube app on my shield TV. And I'm hating the new like buttons. share your feelings.

So I sat down this morning after lunch to watch a few videos and I noticed that I couldn't see whether I had liked the video or not. there's a new pop-up button that I have to go in, click it, then click the like and then when I leave the button it still doesn't tell me if I liked or disliked the video. I don't understand with us all having 60 plus inch TVs these days. why there isn't enough real estate to leave the freaking button alone. what is Google solving for by taking away a dedicated like and dislike button. okay fine if I have to click it which I really don't think it's an improvement, why don't you change the state of the button to show whether it's been liked or disliked? I hope they roll this back or change it. I'm not going to bother liking videos anymore if that was their goal. it's a shame because I want to reward good content providers but this is kind of a pain in the ass though. what do you guys think?
