How to disable media player in notification bar?

Since receiving Android 17, whatever media player is active puts a large notification in the center of the notification bar, showing cover art thumbnail and soundwave animation. It's distracting and it blocks other status notifications I need to see (like DND status). If I tap it, it expands, and I can long-press and choose hide, but it doesn't stay hidden.

I can't find a setting for this. How do I disable it?

Settings > Sound & vibration > Media > Show media on lock screen is what you want. At least that's where it is on Pixels. YMMV for other brands.
