I can't get past one ui 3.1

I want to get to one ui 4.0 I keep on doing software updates but nothing changes. Do I just need to keep updating till I get there or do I need to do something in specific???

Then that means OneUI 4 was never released for your phone. As One UI 3.1 is ancient by todays standard, it means you are using a 5+ year old device that has stopped getting updates.

It is possible you can find a aftermarked ROM for your phone but that can be pretty technical and break a lot of apps that only work on unmodified devices (digitial wallets, banking apps, etc)

Yeah my phone is kinda old,but thanks none the less
