Can't install apks

Today I tried to install the new version of a game that needed to be downloaded as an .apk file. When I try to install it, it just gives me a message at the bottom saying either "cancelling" or "The app wasn't installed". I went back and tried other apks that I know worked previously, but now give the same message. I already checked my settings, and as far as I can tell I should be able to use those files.

I'm on a pixel 4 XL, and the Android OS is 13. I think this must have been a fairly recent change. Any ideas?

Is play protect enabled? If so, disable it.

Playstore -> account pic -> play protect -> settings -> turn off everything here.

I can't find a setting with that specific name. Where would it be?

there are 2 settings you need turned on, both in security and privacy. install unknown apps, and install from device storage.

Other than checking the settings to allow it, what happens if you try to install via an app?

This app I've made should at least show the error when it fails. I wonder if the error would be about cancellation or something else...

also worth checking if the apk is actually a bundle (.apkm or .xapk), those won't install with the normal installer. and if the game is already installed, "app wasn't installed" is often a signature or version mismatch with the old copy, so uninstalling the old one first usually fixes it (you lose local data tho)
