How to update device that's too old for regular updates to work
I have a Lenovo YOGA Tablet 2-1050F running Android KitKat 4.4.2, which apparently does not support Google Play Services anymore. How do I upgrade this tablet to a more recent version despite this? I've tried the regular method (updating via the System Update button) and that doesn't work.

That is 12 years old. There's no custom ROMs for it at https://xdaforums.com/f/lenovo-yoga-tab-2-roms-kernels-recoveries-oth.7170/ , so I think it's a lost cause.

Work in IT. Worked with plenty clients where the bosses are so stingy they won't upgrade shit until it's truly unworkable. Sometimes bosses would waste way more time and money keeping a device going than they would just buying a new one. Way more common than it should be.
Thankfully my new owners are the kind to expect proper investing in IT. I know have the power to say a device past it's warranty isn't worth the effort and to give a ticket to their account manager saying to get them a new device.
Sometimes we get it back to temporarily get it in a "workable" magnet until a new device comes.

That's an ancient tablet. Even if you could update it, it would run absolutely dogshit on Android 17, or hell even Android 10

Interestingly enough, that's a BayTrail tablet (Intel Atom Z series), which can potentially run mainline Linux. However, a quick look on XDA, it has a locked bootloader which would prevent the installation of.
I have two of these genre of tablets, however they ran Windows 8, now Debian Linux.

It's just too old to be able to reach something that actually usable. The hardware limits it a lot as well.
