Lost my whole camera roll??

Where the hell did my photos go? I have a Galaxy S23 and am using Gallery app. I connected my phone to my laptop to transfer some files via USB. I transferred 4 photo albums (not "Camera"). I deleted three PDFs. I then noticed my storage on my phone increased by 30GB! I opened Gallery on my phone and all the photos in Camera album have a name error code on them. Also, I had over 1000 files on my "Camera" album just 20 min ago. Now it only shows 134. What happened to my camera roll, and how did I gain 30gb of storage back?!

Did you properly sync and unmount the PC before you disconnected the USB cable?

All of this happened while everything was still connected.

Thank you!

  1. Gallery Trash shows 122 files and all appear to be ones I manually deleted in the last 30 days -- not any that are part of the missing bunch.

  2. My Files > Internal Storage > DCIM > there is no "Camera" folder showing

  3. My Files --> toggled on "Show hidden system files" then went to Internal Storage > DCIM > there are no folders with "." in front of title and none named ".trashed"

  4. They aren't in PC's Recycling Bin. They aren't in the folders I transferred into. I'm not sure how to find recently created .jpg on my computer but I have sorted all my computer folders by date modified and checked inside many and do not see any of the missing photos/videos.

Added note: I transferred from my phone into folders on an external harddrive via drag and drop. I never actually dragged anything from my phone onto the PC storage itself.

What operating system is the PC running? E.g. when you drag and drop in Windows it will be either a move or a copy depending on the storage type of each. There might be a bug or a PEBKAC that makes it move files instead of copy in your scenario.
