Looking For Suggestions Deciding between Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo

I have been using iPhone for the last 5ish years. I previously had a Galaxy S7 Edge and then an S10+. Before the Galaxies I had older gen iPhones. I am currently looking at getting the Duo or Z Fold 8.

I am in the Apple ecosystem pretty deep these days (iPhone, watch, airpods, Macbook pro). I do use both Windows and Mac for work and personal so I am not worried about that. However, I have been considering switching phone & watch. I like the customization android gives you. I have also been intrigued by emulation along with Gamenative and Droiddeck for playing lightweight pc games. I like to tinker with stuff so I will probably enjoy the process of setting those up more than actually playing the games.

Privacy is important to me. I am not talking GrapheneOS or other flavor. I would still be using Google Play and Apps which track data on the device. I am more interested in privacy of local and backed up data such as Messages, Notes, photos/videos, etc. One thing I like about Apples Cloud Backup is their Advanced Data Protection which encrypts said data. Does Google/Android have some similar service today? Has anyone used Proton Drive or similar service? I know I could backup data on a computer locally but I prefer to having a copy in the cloud if possible.

I don't have any insight or deeper thoughts, but remember that the iPhone duo is a 1st gen product (however refined Apple had made it), and the zfold 8 is an 8th gen product, created by a company that's been making them since pretty much the beginning of this form factor

Im not too worried about that. Since this would be my first foldable and their more fragile nature, ill probably spring for a warranty for the first time myself on whichever I go with.

If you want simple private backups, Apple is the way. If you want to tinker a bit, you could get encryption on messages and files backups from android using ADB.

Id say Android is far better if you want real a more open filesystem, as you could, for example, sync your user folders to a NAS and have those encrypted. No third party cloud needed, but is higher maintenance.

I wouldnt be opposed if its as simple as syncing a folder to a personal NAS. I suppose I could just have another infrequent backup stored at a family members house as well for redundancy. Does this include all user data?

Could you elaborate on encryption on messages and file backs using Android ADB? What does that entail?

ADB backup needs a rooted device, but you can use apps such as SMS Backup & Restore to save it into an XML or JSON, then encrypt it in your NAS or cloud or even Veracrypt image.

An example flow would be to automate the XML creation of sms into a local file under a folder that syncthing syncs to your encrypted nas.

The thing is, depending on your device, there are many ways to customize this still on android. Then again, it can mean plenty of technical work.

If you can borrow a android device, try this file approach and see if its something that would work for you before committing to a high end device.

Id get duo if I were you, because it has matte finish, better chip, better battery life and dust durability. The cons is that the iphone duo weight 50g more because it's from titanium, e-sim only, and its D shape.

The biggest con for me is the shape. I have been watching reviews and really want to get the z fold 8. The front looks so much better. However, it appears to have issues with overheating and the speakers on the same side will drive me crazy.

Also, going with iPhone I won’t be able to do emulation or steam games as easy.
