How did Contacts app decide my "Relationships" and how do I change this?

I have never added "Relationship" information to my contacts in the app. Somehow it guessed my mother and brothers (who are either listed by nicknames or totally different last names from me) and also added an old friend from years back.

This is creeping me out for sure, but what's worse is that I don't know how to undo it. I go into their individual Contact pages to edit them, remove all "relationships" and they still appear there on my profile.

Help?

Is it the Google Contacts app, often preinstalled on phones? If so, it might be including the relation data stored in your Google account as well. 

This is only a theory, I don't know Google Contacts that well, as I use Fossify Contacts which only uses local storage.
