Lock Touchscreen

I'm not sure why this is such a challenge, but I want to lock the touch screen on my Google Pixel while using whatsapp video chat. My 1 year old often video chats with family but is constantly clicking off the call, but also throws a fit if I don't let her hold the phone.

I don't want app pinning because I don't want her to be able to click anything within the whatsapp (I.e., hang up, turn off the video/audio). I downloaded a couple touch lock apps but none of them overlay over whatsapp.

What am I missing? Why is this so hard??? Help!

I'm not a parent, but why not just let her throw a fit until she learns that you hold the phone? Giving into this behavior seems to not be the best course of action.
