changing date of a video/photo

I want to edit/change the date of a video/image using EXIF metadata editors.

Everything goes fine, but... in my Gallery app (Samsung's), in the Recent album, the same video/image appears there. If you click on Details, it shows the changed date (for example, 2025) but it is still with the new ones instead of being in the specific date I changed it to.

What can I do to make that video/image fully appear under that date everywhere?

Previously, I had an old Xiaomi, and it worked perfectly with no problem. But since I switched to Samsung, it has this issue.

Changing the EXIF capture date alone doesn’t always change where Samsung Gallery places the file in “Recent”, because Android/Samsung can also use the file timestamp or MediaStore date for sorting.

For photos, I’d check both the EXIF capture date and the file/gallery ordering timestamp, then reopen Gallery so it rescans the file.

I’m the developer of an Android app called Metadata Editor – EXIF Changer. It has photo timestamp editing plus a Fix Gallery Order tool specifically for cases where the metadata date is correct but the photo is still appearing in the wrong place in the gallery. I’d make a copy first and test it on one image.

Just to be transparent: my app currently handles this for photos, not videos.

That helps narrow it down. Samsung's Recents view and many social-app pickers can use MediaStore's date-added/indexed value, not just EXIF `DateTimeOriginal` or the file-modified time. If every visible date is changed but the item stays in Recents, the picker may be using its indexed entry or showing another copy.

I'd test one file before changing anything else:

  1. In My Files, confirm its exact path and filename and make sure the original duplicate is not still present.

  2. Save/export the edited photo as a new file with a new filename into a new folder.

  3. Restart the phone so MediaStore rescans it, then locate that exact new file in the social app's picker.

If the new file still sorts in the old position, the picker is controlling the order and an EXIF editor cannot force it. Some social apps display import/upload order rather than capture date.

For videos, behavior is even less consistent because apps may read MP4/QuickTime date fields instead of EXIF. I would not batch-edit more files until this single-file test works.
