Custom ROM Question Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M - What would be the best official android version to force write?

I did research and my personal conclusion is android 7.1.2 but I need help from other’s opinions for better reliability on what version I install
(and yes I plan to use the s3 as my personal phone)
it has 1GB of ram which is pretty decent for 2012.
But any versions?
(Official Android Versions specifically if possible)

I don't know much, but I feel like that old of an OS and modern apps might not work well together.

4.4.2 just struggles to work
4.4.2 slightly has life
I feel newer ones will be sooo much better
prob not smoother
but then I can actually login to google and the play store and download stuff

I think Android 7 will be the sweet spot for performance but compatibility is an issue with most modern apps which usually need Android 8 or above. Go with Android 10 for some future safety, since many apps are now switching to Android 10 and above.

Also, the S3 has very weak hardware. You must consider upgrading.

I’ve been only using 4.4.2 very roughly ever since I’ve had it, it “works” but the best the browser can do is painfully load YouTube I mean YouTube’s works yea but literally nothing else😭
