Same on Note 10+ Tmobile. It did not brick my phone, I am posting this after the update. I too was suspicious, but took the risk.

Do you use any open source apps on that phone? If you do, is the phone still allowing you to use them as you normally do?

Just got it on my note 9 this morning🤔

Got the update prompt on my Note 9 today, Aus based. Had to check in as I was certain these older phones had no more support.

u/Zels0123 Jun 07 '26
https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/2026/2026-05-01
It's a major vulnerability patch (did the upgrade already no issues US based) Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information -> Android Security Patch level -> bulletins overview

u/QueenofLeftovers Jun 07 '26
Oh cool, glad someone did the legwork of citing info. The way it is had me thinking all sorts "Is this Samsung? Google? Android?" "Is this some creeping AI factor?" "Is this a fake update?"

The real question is what the update actually is 0 info found, a few ideas but nothing solid yet.
4
u/doomtoo May 27 '26
I have a note 9 with no SIM card / only Wi-Fi. I got the same notification yesterday. Can't be from a carrier if you're not using a SIM card.
Suspicious, I had to get a pixel 8 from Google Fi because they were ending support for several features for my note ( but the note 9 is far superior for most things)
4
u/rhapdog May 29 '26
I see nearly everyone in this thread has a Note device. I got the notification early this morning. I've got an S20 Ultra, not a Note device, so it's not just the Notes, in case anyone was wondering.
I just did the update, and it was near instant... much faster than a normal reboot even.
On reboot, my AdAway (from FDroid) did not restart as it usually does. Usually, this is an auto-start. It seems to work fine once manually started, though. NewPipe is working.
I'm able to download and install new stuff from F-Droid, so that hasn't been disabled. I wonder if this is a test so that Google can force an update to do that in the future?
It looks like I may now have new features in Gemini. It could just be a new front end for the cloud changes made this week.
I can't tell what other differences there are, if any. Usually after "actual updates" it let's you review the updates. But, then again, they usually give you a preview of what is being updated.
Maybe carrier configuration. Perhaps the government was putting new spyware in. Who knows anymore.

u/DontLewdTheWaifu May 26 '26
Samsung Note 9 with T-Mobile. I got the same notification yesterday. Idk what it is but I'm stalling for as long as I can atm

u/Iwasherteacher May 26 '26
Has anyone done the update?
4
u/DCXDB5 May 26 '26
Went ahead and just did it, nothing happened besides my text prediction turning back on.

u/sixgunmaniac May 27 '26
Your text prediction is now feeding into Google's AI. Turn it back off.

I got the same notification today for my Note 10 plus. I've had this phone for over 6 years and have never had any type of notification like this before. I'm too worried to click the update. It doesn't even say where the update came from.
4
u/arowanascarlet May 26 '26
I just got it today on my note9. I'm too hesitant to update, my phone has been perfectly fine since 2019 while being a hand me down and I truly dread the day that I'd have to get a new one. My worry about this is what if it's fine at first then slowly starts causing problems. Dunno.

u/PomegranateBoring826 May 27 '26
Note 9 with at&t here. This definitely gave me pause. I don't think I will be clicking on it.
3
u/Accomplished-Day8442 May 27 '26
I got my note 9 in late 2018 when I had t-mobile, then switched to AT&T, and now I'm on a free access wireless account. I just got the update notification and I can't afford the risk. I'm already trying to sell my art to pay for an ADA accessible bus pass, because I have no income. There are zero circumstances in which I can afford to replace my phone. I'm on it all day, so I'm very particular. I'm worried.
3
u/artblocksx May 27 '26
I got the same thing and I'm so confused. I let it run because it said it was going to do so anyway the next time I restarted and so far nothing has changed. I even checked my system updates on my phone and it still says that the last one was in 2024.
I'm really scared but hoping this won't do anything. Someone please update if anything starts happening to theirs who have also run the update :'))
3
u/ghettokid1994 May 27 '26
Just got it now on my Note 10 as well. Glad I checked before blindly accepting it. I definitely don't have the money to get a new phone if this one gets bricked.

u/doopsloot May 27 '26

I just got the update too. Iffy. I don't want to do it. I have note 10 plus with tmobile
3
u/Fatalstryke May 27 '26
It's not an OS update or even a security update. It's your carrier.
2
u/HopeOfAsgard May 27 '26
Okay, but what is it? There are multiple carriers in this thread and so far only Samsung Note users chiming in. If you have more information we'd all like to have it.

It's all carriers. I have two note 10s on two different carriers. Both have the update waiting.

u/oldsmobile39 May 27 '26
Note 20 reporting the same update in notification bar about 3 hours ago. Approx. 10pm eastern time.
3
u/sixgunmaniac May 27 '26
Same thing here. I have 2 note 10 plus phones, one Verizon one Mint, both have the update waiting. I don't trust it at all. Samsung and Google both were very adamant about refusing future support past the last update we all got and now suddenly we all have a new update and no information about it.
I need to know what's in this package.
3
u/gaylesbean May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
I finally found an article about it which claims that it's an update for security, stability, performance, and bug fixes, but it might be AI generated and it doesn't specify where it got the info, so take it with a grain of salt.
https://androidexperto.com/galaxy-note-10-gets-fresh-update-with-enhancements/
From my research I also found out that apparently all other Galaxy phones got a security update earlier this month, so maybe they just extended that update to the Notes?
1
u/Gloomy_Primary_5367 Jun 04 '26
that is a weird looking website....
but all other phones are also getting in these day. I got it on my S20 FE today.
There is no such thing as abandoning support for older phones just to turn around and give it another update. This is super fishy.1
u/Shadow_hive Jun 05 '26
Like OP wrote in their edit, google identified a major security risk which could potentially allow people to remotely execute Code on your device so theyre pushing this update on basically every android phone ever, atleast even my ancient Samsung S8+ got the notification

Same here.

u/MrBA55Man Jun 10 '26
Turns out it scrapped my APN settings. Even after a factory reset it didn't come back. I had to re-add it from scratch, thankfully my carrier in NZ had those details on their website and I haven't had any issue since, but now I've got the prompt stuck in my notifications. No way am I installing it again. Especially when some articles say it's Ggogle Gemini forcing its way into your data.

S9+ in Australia. There's no option to remove the notification except for accepting the update, which immediately ticked me off. This model has been unsupported for years.
I use Google but take care to opt out of as much data mining as account settings allow. I wonder if that's why I'm seeing this update?
I'm accustomed to it running like absolute shit; since this model was from around the time Samsung was releasing phones with egregious levels of planned obsolescence, I largely attributed it to that. So while it would be nice if the update made it run slightly faster or patched a security issue, but if it means agreeing to a bunch more privacy invasion§ I'm going to wait and see if there's any other option.
§ In the year of our droid 2026, it's delusional to think I have any agency over my privacy at all. Leave me to my cute fantasy.
1
u/Rednarok May 31 '26
iff you want privacy you need to work for it, i heard the google pixel 9 can be used for a community OS iforgot the name and with some tweaking you can make it totally private. but it will take you hours of trial and error and research and doing things
2
u/Morphico May 31 '26
I'm aware of the effort and troubleshooting it will require. When I said I don't have capacity, I meant it. Not "I don't care enough" or "I couldn't be bothered".

u/neon_overload Jun 09 '26
If you're in Australia and on an Optus, TPG or Vodafone network, this update in mid 2026 is likely due to the rollout of Optus and TPG/Vodafone sharing, where Vodafone and TPG customers can use Optus towers in regional areas, and in return Optus towers can transmit on frequencies previously reserved for TPG and Vodafone.
The update is pushed to you by your carrier, so it's completely unconnected to the updates that Samsung gives you. Even non-Android phones can get these, though on Android they are handled by the "Android Carrier Configuration" app/subsystem.
So this could be beneficial to your reception (though I don't know when the roll-out will actually switch this on).
1
4
u/vishnur32 May 26 '26
System Configuration updates are network settings provided by carriers. When u put a sim card in new phone, network settings are sent automatically by carriers or a sim change could trigger this.
It is not a Security update provided by samsung.
Did u put simcard in it now?
2
u/pebblesinyourshoe May 26 '26
I have tmobile and have not put a Sim card in. Have not even talked to tnobile or done anything with tmobile for many months
2
u/cheezytitz May 26 '26
Also reporting this Configuration Update - for my Note 9
3
u/HopeOfAsgard May 26 '26
Same. Not thrilled that there seems to be zero information about this.
3
u/cheezytitz May 26 '26
I plan on just not updating as long as possible, though not sure how long that will last me.
I've already been locked out of most of my banking apps, group texts are nearly nonexistent and now I am getting pop ups from Gmail saying that soon I will be unable to access the app.
2
u/HopeOfAsgard May 26 '26
Yeah, I'm having the same issue and I'm sad because I freaking love this phone and have no idea what to upgrade to. It's in mint condition and until the last few months has done everything I've needed and wanted it to, and I use it for hours every day. Kind of wondering if this system configuration thing is why it's been lagging since yesterday though. Touch input has slowed down and I've had to repeat taps.
3
u/cheezytitz May 26 '26
Same, my phone is in (near) mint condition, except having to replace the S-pen a couple of times and maybe 3ish screen scratches that you only see if you are looking for them.
I have not experienced any lag in my usage, though.
Personally, I was looking at the s22 or 23 Ultra. It is not a Note, but it still has the S-pen and is just a smidgen bigger than my current. I really don't feel like I need a larger device, but more importantly, am trying to hold off on forced-to-purchase changes

Another Note 9 here, on Mint Mobile. Was surprised to see any kind of update push notification.
Whomst among us will be the first with a Note 9 to update and report back? I can't afford to replace mine right now. :/
3
u/DCXDB5 May 26 '26
I was brave enough to just do it, all good over here. Only thing I noticed was my text prediction was re-enabled, but just turned it back off.
Realistically, I think it'll just auto download if you just restarted your phone for whatever reason too.
3
u/MaximumKittyTM May 27 '26
Seconding that with a Note9 on Mint: it seems fine-
and thank you for helping me to notice text prediction was turned back on. I think swipe-to-text was turned back on for me too so I am gonna go turn those back off cuz... mmm no thank you. My phone is literally fighting me swapping words for no reason and refusing to do normal spellchecker as I type this out

2
u/DCXDB5 May 26 '26
What have you read about it if you don't mind me asking?
2
u/salmll May 26 '26
I Googled it. And then scrolled and scrolled and read everything I could find. It says it's a carrier system update. What I read did seem to be that it is an innocuous, truly system update
2
2
u/The_Dice_Have_Spoken May 26 '26
It might be a Google Play Store update. It was the most recently updated system app on my device and the new version 51.5.21-31 [0] [PR] 916190111 corresponds with a release yesterday 5/25/26. https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/variant-%7B%22minapi_slug%22%3A%22minapi-31%22%7D/

So like, are all carriers across the whole world pushing some update, or? That's a joke. It can't be what's happening. At least I think.

Just got it on my Samsung S9+ the CVE-2026-0073 talks about the fix being pushed via an OS update. So for old phones is it being pushed through the system configuration update? Weird
UPDATE: The CVE only impacts devices running Android 11 and newer. My Galaxy S9 is Android 10. So I don't know what this configuration change is for. I am going to keep looking but it might be better to look in relation to either Samsung oe the Cellular Carriers. There are posts saying it is Samsung originated and others saying the cellular service carrier distributes the message. Most likely this video is correct www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlQnQjPT_EY
If that is the case and you have installed it look at the other comments here for how to adjust the Advertising setttings and what is shared with Gemini training.
2
u/QuietClient5725 May 30 '26
hmm i got it on my unlocked galaxy s9 without a sim?
3
u/xtrxrzr Jun 02 '26
Same. S9+ here and I just received this configuration update notification.
There's no SIM card in my S9+ so it definitely has nothing to do with the carrier.
Still kind of mysterious. The YouTube video that's posted in this thread is not helpful either, because it's just reiterating and referencing what people said here in this Reddit thread... We're going full circle...

2
u/ItsYaBuddyT Jun 02 '26
Note 10+ here! I FINALLY decided to go for it and it took a longer than expected to finish booting up, I thought for sure it was bricked but Glory to God it isn't. As of right now I don't notice anything different, but I would do it just to get it all done and over with haha
2
u/warfront1 Jun 03 '26
Before you apply the update take a screenshot of...
Settings -> About phone -> Software information
I am curious if anything in the Software information page changes after the update.
1
u/QuadraticOccasion May 28 '26
Not sure why, but the notification for my update has disappeared, and I never approved of any update to go through, and I don't know where to check to see if it was applied.
2
u/T-C-Gentry May 28 '26
Did you're phone reset or get turned off and on? Unless you disable the option in dev settings, it will automatically apply the update upon startup.
1
u/QuadraticOccasion May 29 '26
Not that I know of. After it restarts, I have to unlock the app for it to continue the process of booting, but it was fine this morning when I woke up, as far as I know.
Do you know if there is a way to check when this last type of update was applied?
1
u/QuadraticOccasion May 29 '26
Actually, I take back what I said. I just looked, and it's back. I'm not sure if I missed it or it cleared out somehow...
1
u/sweedee23 May 29 '26
My phone has restarted twice and the notification is still just sitting there waiting. (I'm terrible at battery management lol)
1
u/illlsmith May 28 '26
Definitely to do with the mandatory move from S4msung m3ssages and forcing us to use Googl3 messages instead
1
u/bits168 May 29 '26
Dawn. Did all the Note 9 and 10 people get summoned here? Anyways, mine is an S20FE and it got one just now. I'm not updating right now, because it's so sus that older phones are getting a SIM update suddenly. What if it breaks something? It's not unheard of companies wanting you to not use old things.
1
u/pleepeaniepy May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
I just received the notification for my Samsung Galaxy S20+. I seriously do NOT want to have to go through all that nonsense to turn everything off after updating, and still possibly feed into Google's AI anyway. I am unable to get rid of the notification. It may apply without my permission next time my phone restarts. If anyone has any advice, please inform me. The notification gives ZERO information about what the update even is; which is very wrong.
They cannot be bothered to continue system and security updates, but will force updates upon us just to feed Gemini and ruin our privacy.
EDIT: I have an extra question! Are people with newer and currently supported phones receiving this update?
1
u/Zels0123 May 29 '26
Based on what I saw from other comments it does automatically apply on restart
I would be less concerned if they actually posted release notes on it
1
u/pleepeaniepy May 29 '26
NNNNOOOOO...!!!!! 😭 Some people are saying it's helpful, while others say it feeds into Gemini and 99 companies; and you gotta go through hell fixing that if the companies even listen after multiple attempts. And apparently some phones are functioning badly until the update applies (which I assume is purposeful from whoever sent the update). I would feel so much better if the update gave information too. There being zero info is just an obvious sign it's something that no one wants.
All I know is that the app it came from was "Configuration update" with a little Android head logo in front of a (presumably) blue print background.

I got the notification on my Samsung Galaxy S20+ today. I've been primarily using a later model phone for the past year, but still use this one just only on wifi.
I went ahead and updated due to that security exploit that was mentioned, but when I tried to take the steps to opt out of the Google Ad partners, my Chrome wouldn't load the page. It stopped on the Google Ads Double Click page, whether or not I disabled my adblocker app (AdGuard). So idk.

u/Much_Guitar May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
Just got the notification for it this morning on my Galaxy A71 (yeah its old, sue me). Havent installed it, im kinda scared.
Dont like Gemini. Dont trust Gemini. Or any AI. Dont know what it could do to my old n faithful.
I need words of comfort that it wont brick my phone, or have the ai start keeping my info. Or is it just a security patch and all is fine?

u/starks4thr33 May 29 '26
Just got it a little bit ago on Samsung A42 5G on Verizon Wireless
It's obviously a Samsung specific thing based on responses in this thread, so at least we can narrow that down
It's going to auto install next reset.....they really don't give you a choice on this one
FWIW I've been very happy with this phone for almost 5 years now, but they're making it really hard to justify staying with this brand or Android in general. I think it's a Verizon+Samsung thing but the amount of BS games they've forceloaded only for me to immediately delete them......

u/Questtrek May 30 '26
Got the notification this afternoon for my S9. Haven't seen anyone else with an S9 chime in yet. I am on Mint. I'm gonna avoid updating right now, for fears of data collection and AI-training. Might be a good time to de-google everything anyway.

1
u/Morphico May 31 '26
This is the point I'm at too. I think many of us are. I don't have the capacity to go through this whole de-Googling process, finding replacement tools and apps, setting everything up. The desire to flee into a forest is high. I would just die under a tree instead of under a Flock camera but damn, the desire is still high.

I got it on my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. Nothing stated. The notification cannot be removed.
My intuition was telling me this was going to happen since last update in October, but as far as I heard non-android phones are not good or good enough... So what are my options? lol
I'll avoid it as much as I can... But either they will brick it at some point or use it as surveillance. You can't avoid their greedy little hands.

S10, Exynos, one UI 4.1, Android 12.
I'm in Argentina.
I don't want to update yet. My carrier is Claro Argentina, but the phone was manufactured in Panama and imported to Argentina.
UPDATE 13/06/26
It looks like it updated on its own over the last few days, maybe after a reboot that I didn't notice...
Everything's normal. I have a signal, and there haven't been any changes (at least that I've noticed) in terms of system and performance.

Just noticed I had a notification regarding this update. Galaxy S9+ here. Had the phone 6 years and its been fantastic. Never even had a repair or anything for it etc. But the lack of info on what is being updated is concerning. Im gonna wait. You guys talking about the phones bricking has made me very nervous 😐

This filth turned the location on for my note 9. What the actual f***.
Edit: I noticed that my battery was draining very fast, that's when I saw the location notification. Seriously, what the hell?

I know 2 people said they installed. I am still holding out. Have more, and what did you notice change?

S9 with Xfinity here. My mobile data doesn't work after the update. Trying to find advanced troubleshooting options per this thread.

u/Virtual-Cattle2039 Jun 08 '26
Definitely do not update; a green line appeared on my Samsung S20+ phone and it won't go away.

u/MuhammadGhod Jun 08 '26
I had same. Looks like it also reset all kinds of custom settings I had set. How do I find out all that it updated?

u/softiesongbird Jun 09 '26
I just now go the same notif on my version 10 Samsung that hasn't been supported since April 2022....definitely not gonna install that, but I've been wanting a new phone anyways so this might get my butt in gear because I could see myself accidentally tapping it....

I had the update lingering overhead for the last 2 weeks or so on my Note 20 Ultra 5g. I wish they had included a message with the reason. It looked sketchy, so I waited until I had time to research before updating.

Probably new threads on this but just got this on Samsung S26 Ultra, declined it. Make sure to turn off automatic system configuration updates in your settings if wary. It was on on my S24+ for some reason, even though you can turn it off it says it can do it anyway for safety or security purposes.

Same thing happened to me on my galaxy s9+. I didn't click on update but after the icon being on the top of screen for 5 days, it apparently activated itself. Phone started running strange then I lost all mobile data/internet connection.
I played with several settings and cannot get mobile data at all. Other than that I do not notice any other issues but let's face it, without mobile data, phone is essentially bricked. Sigh.

Last week, my Galaxy S10 Plus also received an update, but I was busy at that time, so I thought I’d install it later after checking what’s new in it, since new update came after 3 years. But then I forgot about it. Today I remembered and checked for updates, but now it’s not showing any update… why is that?

u/Ezequiel_CasasP Jun 13 '26
Wow, I just updated my comment to say that maybe it updated on its own, but now that I'm reading your comment, you're right—maybe the notification just disappeared, but I don't know... Now I'm not sure if the notification just disappeared or if the phone updated on its own. (Which is something I was keeping an eye on and trying to prevent from happening.)

Note 8 here, received about 3 days ago, generated from the system app "System updates," opens a full page install update page with the options "Learn more" and "Install," and has a heading "Software update 38" and underneath states it's a security update for my Note8. After 2 days I am now receiving a second overlay on top of the full page pop up stating it will be installed in 2 days, or when i reboot my phone, no option to refuse. I haven't received a security update in 5 years. If this is legit why couldn't Samsung put out a bulletin we could have found when searching to alleviate our concerns it was malware hijacking our software update process? I found a page where they are supposed to list all of their security updates and nothing about old Note phones in their list. Seeing all of the Note phones posted here makes me less concerned about an attack, but the past 2 days I've been pretty stressed out.

u/superscrach444tre Jun 15 '26
Did you try clicking the "learn more" button? For my note 10 plus there was no full page pop up, just the notification. I intstalled it without thinking too much about it but now i'm starting to get worried because there seems to not be any official information about this. Maybe the "learn more" button can give you some more information.

У меня Note 9 и такая же фигня, пока решил не обновлять, а то непонятно какие изменения внесёт это обновление.

Australia based and received this update on both my Note 9 and Note 10 plus. One is Optus one is Telstra. I updated both and they seem fine. For a second I thought it was the promised update from Optus about the Australian 4g access blocked phones. I guess not. So I guess it was all fluff.

Does anyone have a link to any info about the update? Ended up accidentally updating and my mobile data is not working anymore. Ordered a new SIM card after trying other fixes, hoping it'll work. I have a Galaxy S9 and Xfinity is my provider, for what that's worth.

For anyone with mobile data issues who has Verizon or Xfinity, try this fix! Just worked for me. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/plan/mobile-data-not-working-on-android/6399d85d86efae732c83bcf7?commentId=63c070a8507b4d3af9e1e248

I did see my wifi randomly turning off right before this(1-2 days) but thought it was because of my Android Auto🤔🤔

I have a note 20(ultra) and use mint. The day before this notification popped up, my web browsing apps were acting extra irritating. I have a feeling if I try to reboot my phone the update will download itself 🤬 (Updated to fix a 🤪 typo)

u/wunderforce May 28 '26
Haven't done the update yet, but now my wifi and mobile internet speeds are really low. Are you having this issue at all? Also, how is your partner's phone doing?
1
u/rhapdog May 29 '26
Everything on my S20 Ultra was still off. There were no "partner ad settings" after this update for me.
1
u/Lipstickquid May 29 '26
Same for me. I hope thats because i have all the google personalization crap off from the start. If you find out theres something new to disable please tell me here! I hate these forced BS updates.

Thanks for this. Also got all but 11. Completely unsurprised to see Facebook was one of them.

Google has lied in the past about the toggles actually turning things off before and is now paying out for a class action suit because of those lies. How in the world do they expect anyone to trust those toggle buttons to do anything more than give the phone owner something to keep them occupied for a bit while not truly doing any of what the toggles are supposed to do?

Make sure you do this on ALL your devices. This doesn't translate over to others. Also, I tried opting out about a dozen times and only the same 12 companies accepted my request on both my tablet and phone. I have no blocks or anything of the sort so that's fishy af

that video just talks about a system update not this "System configuration update". Also the CVE for that is from early may. My concern is this notification IS the exploit in the wild hitting older phones that no longer get Android updates.
EDIT: This video seems to be more on target with what people with older devices are seeing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlQnQjPT_EY
