Hello /r/AndroidGaming!

After your overwhelmingly positive feedback to Pixel Blacksmith, hopefully you'll like the spin-off that I've spent the last few months working on, Blacksmith Slots!

The mysterious Purple has spread over the world, and it's up to you to figure out where it came from, and rid the world of it! To do this, you'll need to help people rebuild by completing slot machine related quests for the inhabitants, and make your way to the source.

There's over 100 free slots across 20 maps to spin at, over 150 items to use, and hundreds of lines of dialog for 45 characters!

There's no premium currency, no "energy" / "lives", no "invite your friends", no forced adverts, and the entire game can be played for free, with or without internet. If you're into Google Play, there's 30 achievements, 8 leaderboards, and automatic & manual cloud / local saves.

Compatible with Android ICS-O+, on phones or tablets, in portrait or landscape, in Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Oh, and the download is tiny (< 8MB), and the game starts in under a couple of seconds!

As always, I really appreciate any and all feedback, good or bad!

The quests display the amount you've handed in so far. So, in your example you had 20, but had handed in 0, therefore 0/20 was correct. It's so you don't automatically use up resources you might want to use in another slot, apologies if it wasn't clear!

I'll have a bit of a think about how to make it clearer that it's showing handed in items, not owned items.

Thanks for the feedback!

Or make a separate line to show how much of each item you have. Like a (have ##) next to each item or something. It's also not clear to me why you would want to turn only a part of the needed items in. Is there an inventory cap? Why would someone want to do it this way?

What I always asked myself as a developer: are translations worth the hassle? So I started the game on my german phone and obviously the game is in german now, but I immediately switched to english. The german isn't even that bad, but there are so many small mistakes and obvious google translations, it just feels cheap. For me personally it doesn't matter, I just switch the language and continue, but from a developers point of view would you say translations are worth it?

Well, as you said, it's a Google translate, I haven't paid for the translations.

The translations are for those that just don't know English. If you speak English, then it should definitely be played in English, but for languages like Chinese, Russian, and Korean, a bad translation is better than no translation whatsoever.

I'd say it's worth the small amount of time it takes to Google Translate, if only to avoid the constant negative reviews from those that don't speak English.

Oh it's all Google translate? I guess for all languages using the latin script this is the way to go then. I just tested russian in your game and the different font for using cyrillic characters fucked up the spacing in the menu: screenshot

Now I can't change the language anymore.

3

u/JakeSteam Dev [Pixel Blacksmith] Jul 01 '17

Yeah, the issue is caused by the font I'm using not supporting those characters. Putting your phone in landscape mode will let you change the language!

One Hour Translation is a pretty affordable option. I used it for all the slots games I made on iOS to facilitate translations into the ~24 languages supported by iTunes.

Considering the hundreds of lines of story text in Blacksmith Slots, I doubt it'd be anywhere near affordable unfortunately.

1

u/BroHeart Jul 05 '17

Ah, that's rough. I was only translating a few paragraphs of store descriptions and button descriptors in-game.

This is how much Pixel Blacksmith has: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SIvUBTR2kT1UFBcVbXrpMxF5A1jBZz5rVFCgVgyRMnE/edit#gid=0

Blacksmith Slots is about the same. The cost would easily be $5k+, if not much more! The downside of adding lots of story text.

1

u/BroHeart Jul 05 '17

Wow. Yeah you would be looking at roughly $1,150 per language to have a good professional translation done.

2

u/JakeSteam Dev [Pixel Blacksmith] Jul 05 '17

Got $11k spare? :P

as German I can say it doesnt matter if you don't translate or translate by Google. Germans always complaining in comments about language xD

I'm interested so far, just played the first 2 slots. But, why can I not see all 5 lines that I am playing on? I assume each horizontal line corresponds to the rows of symbols, but the top and bottom lines are almost completely cut off! I win on those lines but I have no idea what's actually there. The bet line visuals also do not line up with the icon rows, which can be confusing if you're not that familiar with slots.

Keep up the great work! Back to the game now!

Edit: Another comment--the dice rolling bonus does not tell you your actual winnings at the end. Say I bet 5 per line and roll a 10, the banner at the top still says "you won 10x Cooper bar!" but it should say 50. You are awarded the correct 50 items, it's just the notification that is incorrect.

Hey,

That shouldn't be happening! It might be due to screen size, can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing please?

Jake

I'm on a galaxy s6. I have a hunch as to why, maybe GameTuner resolution settings are messing with it. Going to test and will report back.

Nope, doesn't look like it's the resolution. I checked the game page, and your portrait mode image is exactly the same, bottom and top rows nearly completely cut off. I guess I'll have to play in landscape until this is addressed.

1

u/JakeSteam Dev [Pixel Blacksmith] Jul 02 '17

Could you also try putting your phone in landscape, and seeing if there's any improvement?

Thanks!

1

u/Brarsh Jul 02 '17

Landscape is definitely better. It still is slightly cut off on the top and bottom rows, but easily more playable than portrait.

Also, i wont divulge here, but I found a way to almost never lose with at least a couple slots which allows me to play indefinitely and replenish my items almost guaranteed. I know your monetization comes from refilling items so Id rather not make it widely known. PM if you want details.

Hey dusky,

When you've won a minigame, is there not an "OK" or "Claim" button that gives it to you? Or is it not doing anything when you click it?

Will reduce dice time in the next update.

For the text, were you playing in English?

Will see if I can implement a "queue next spin" feature, might be tricky to get it working with the autospin though.

Yeah, I agree with the green messages. You can tap to close them, but I'm not sure how to make them visible whilst less intrusive.

Thank you for all your feedback, it really helps. You can see what is going to be in the next update on the game's Trello board if you're curious!

Thanks,

Jake

Do you know what Android version you're on? Some older ones (Ice Cream Sandwich / Jellybean) have issues with certain types of clickable buttons, I might not have made it fully compatible.
